1-14-13 Hey, even that chilly ride down the rapids wasn't enough to cool off my hot streak! I had a little time at the end of the day to do a quick hike and discovered antler #6 today! As I was hiking along, I decided to stop and pour myself a cup of java from my thermos. I saw a nice big tree ahead that looked like a great place to take a break and watch over the woods around me! Apparently, at some point in time a buck had the same idea and left this little 2pt antler for me! It's an oldie but a goodie! I think my camera may have gotten a bit too wet yesterday. Pics look a little cloudy. Anyhow....... ATL From above.. uncovered.. Antlers- 6 Sets- 1 Dead bucks- 5 Dead doe/fawns- 3

Last year I went through the ice in this same crick! That REALLY sucked, lol I need to hang zip line, or Tarzan rope,.... or shoot myself across out of a canon,.... or somethin'!

1-13-13 I headed out this morning and got to my spot early. The weather today had me fired up and I hit the ground running! 45 minutes into my hike, I spotted my first antler! Nice little 2pt! No luck with the mate, but I didn't spend a lot of time in the area looking too hard. I wanted to hit some other spots while I was here. My fast pace eventually slowed a step or two after that find. Probably around hour six, all the hiking the last couple days caught up to me. I did find another dead doe on my way home. Heading home I needed to cross a crick that was roaring with the recent meltdown. I got to the edge of the bank and tested the depth with a stick. It was just about over my knees, which was ok because I was already soaked from crossing it earlier further upstream. Soooo........... I gingerly stepped in while holding onto a branch on the shore. Although only knee deep, the swift current took my foot downstream before it ever hit bottom. I had already commited and let go of the branch. Next thing I know, I'm laying on my back shooting down the crick like the log ride at Six Flags, lol! Now I'm soaked head to toe, cameras water-logged, ciggys and lighter dripping wet, and still have a 2 mile hike before I get home! I hopped outta the woods at that point and took the road home, but I swear as soon as I hit the road, the temps dropped and the wind picked up to about 30mph! Fortunately, my antler was stuffed safely in my pack and got away with only a bath! I love shed hunting!!! Antlers- 5 Sets- 1 Dead bucks- 5 Dead doe/fawns- 3

Maybe from a buck with blue balls, lol Not all of them get to breed. I've seen it too, but I have no idea what it's from.

Today I hit the dredded corn field since things were melting out nicely. I love this weather. I just wish I had more time today. Two hours into my hike I spotted an antler ahead. #4 is a no-brow 3pt side! No luck with the mate. I didn't find anything in the corn, he dropped this one in the hedgerow beside the field. Antlers- 4 Sets- 1 Dead bucks- 5 Dead doe/fawns- 2

Yeah, there is. I've sold a good too many over the years. I don't think you could pay him enough to part with one of his antlers though!

Finally got the ok to post these. My friend Chris is the inspiration for any NY shed hunter to keep on hikin'! 2 more antlers and he hits 700 lifetime!

Sweet horn, congrats on your first of the year! Hope you can complete the set!
-
Here's his pile! The man is a NY antler finding machine! We had a get together this fall at Letchworth and he brought a few totes full of horns for us to drewl over! This pic is 600! Edit: Sorry, dead link. I'll try to get a pic
-
Lol - just by a few! A buddy of mine on another site is 2 antlers away from 700 total. His pile looks a lot like that! Quite the accomplishment when your pile looks like that!
-
Nice job, congrats! Sounds like you all had a fun hunt! No snow?
-
Yup, most spots produce a few every year. Some years I don't even make it to them all, so I'll hit those spots the following year and usually find a few antlers that have been there an extra season. You can never have too much land to roam, so I always try to to get access to new properties even if I don't plan on making a habit of getting to them.
-
Pav, these dead bucks come over miles and miles of hiking as I'm sure Red can attest to. I'd be very concerned if I was hauling them all out of one area. Some of my shedding spots are 30 miles apart, so it's kind of deceiving. One day I may hike an area close to home, and the next day hit one of my other spots in a different county. I've got one spot of 1000 acres that usually turns up quite a few skulls and dead bucks alone. I can spend the entire shed season in there and never have to look in the same spot twice.

Thanks guys! I hope I can match that little guy up! It's a pretty neat horn. I did a quicky hike today and spotted a tine! Looked like an oldie, but I couldn't wait to claim my prize! errrrrrrrr.. uhhhg... ahhhh well... got him just in time before the antler rats chewed the one tine completely off. These old skulls don't count towards my dead deer totals.., just the fresh ones. Better than nothin' I suppose! I'll hang him on the wall of shame with all his old buddies!

Dang, there really are Bigfoots in NY! Hope all turns out well!
-
I'd deffinately have a look in that area, but if you think he's been in the area recently it might be a good idea to wait a bit longer. I know a few guys that have found antlers right next to fresh rubbed trees (evident by the fresh shredded bark on top of the snow). I've never found one that way myself, but I always give them a look. Food sources also a good bet this year..... if you can find one! Good luck Pav!

1-9-12 Had a free day today so what better to do than a little shed hunting! Finally the snow is slowly melting out and making any hikes in the hills a little easier. I started out the day with a dead doe find. Likely a roadkill. Next I hit an old orchard and the adjacent hemlocks when I found another dead deer. A little button buck with 1" knobs. Nothing else untill the last hour of my hike. In another hemlock patch I spotted an antler melting out next to an old bed! #3 is a cute little miniature 3pt,lol It was nice to finally get another after a long hike! Antlers- 3 Sets- 1 Dead bucks- 5 Dead doe/fawns- 2

Once upon a time feeding deer was perfectly legal and widely accepted in NY. It wasn't uncommon to see a corn pile and salt block behind any homeowners yard just inside the woodline. Nobody around these parts ever had much problem with deer eating their ornamentals. A simple chicken wire cage was enough of a deterrent to hold the deer to the feed piles which provided easy access, more desireable eats, and preferred locations back in the sticks. So yes, to answer your question, you could deter them from destroying your residential garden by providing supplemental feed at a time like this.

I was being serious. Try it on your spare if ya don't believe.
-
Sure does, just not as long as a protectant... it seems to attract grime instead of repel it. It'll hold you over for a couple days though.
-
I used to use brake fluid as tire shine when I ran out of Armor All.
-
Hmmm, now that I think of it.... you're the shortest so you get to be the hydrant. I'll be the guy walking his dog past ya!
-
OK Red, here's the plan! Let me borrow your hydrant costume, and you can be the phone booth! Once the big one drops, we'll ditch our disguises and make our getaway down the skyway, lol
