  1. I love my Thompson Center Impact .50 caliber with 3-9X40 simmons scope, Blackhorn 209 powder, and Barnes TMZ 250Gr all copper round. This shoots well and I can use it in Ohio (no rifles) where I hunt half the time. This is my go to gun.

In NY I do like to take out my Remington 700 ADL in 30-06 which is topped with a 3-9X40 Banner Bushnell and firing Hornady SST 165Gr. I wish I had the opportunity to use this more but reserve this as my NY rifle. I load the 180gr Hornady for bear.

I purchased a Virginian Dragoon .44mag, 7.5" barrel this summer and love this beautiful and stout pistol. I look forward to using on deer this year but cannot bring to NY. It would seem that a license holder or better a lifetime license holder could use a pistol to hunt. I respect that it is the law and I abide but just wish I could.

  2. On my Muzzle loader (T/C Impact) I use a variable scope and really feel confident with my shots. I don't think I would put a seethrough mount on it. My Remington 700ADL in 30-06 has a see-through sight under which I may see my iron sights for close shot and use scope for long shot.

Maybe we should ponder a scope on to of the Muzzleloader and have a gunsmith move the iron sights over counterclockwise 46-60 degrees (canted sights). The barrel doesn't taper and canted sights on the side of the muzzleloader will likely be just as accurate as on top.

Canted sights are more popular than ever on AR platforms for 'in close work' while maintaining a scope sight picture on top of the platform.

Sorry to get off track by mentioning AR platforms.... Just pondering sight options from the free state of Ohio.

  3. Can you buy your desired bullet in .45 caliber in the reloading section. Then purchase the sabot separately. This is a way cheaper way to assemble the same round they sell as 'black powder' ammo. You may be happy with shock waves but nothing messes with my confidence than switching things up after finding the right combo.

  4. Regarding Alleghany State Park, there is no hunting in the park and most of the land around the park is private.

    Look again.

-South Valley State forest Cattaraugus #2, #3 totals 4,227 acres of public hunting ground. Just west of Allgany state Park on the other side of Allegheny reservoir...

    -Pine Hill State Forest

    -Bucktooth State Forest

    -Nine Mile Creek State Forest

    -Rock City Sytate Forest (HUGE)

    -McCarty Hill State Forest

  5. how does it work if you move? do you still keep the NY even if your out of state or does it transfer to the state you live?

I moved out of state 11 years ago and return every fall for Salmon and Bear/Deer hunt. The license is only for NY and I get all the turkey tags and free DMP tag. I wish I purchased the muzzleloader permit / lifetime before I left now.

Anyways, they mail it to wherever you live and you continue to enjoy while avoiding out of state license fees. Mine paid for itself in 4 years. lifetime license fee vs oos sportsman fee.

  6. Woodbury gets hammered during the first three weeks of November. Lots of people I know who have went there all report shock the first time they set foot there. Now, that said, they did find some places to get away from others, but in large by the time they started to get dialed in, it was 4-5 days into the hunt.

AEP lands I have heard can offer some places to get off the path.

I always seem to find the rut in the portions I now hunt in Ohio to be about 5-7 days behind wNY activity wise.

I totally agree with the rut timing. This also holds true for fall leaves and inversely for spring blossoms.

  7. Here is what I do. I live in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and hunt public ground. 141 acres within deer dragging distance. there is also 300+ acres 1 mile away. They are both nearly landlocked and see little pressure. Both are also surrounded with soy and / or corn.

Both properties are a part of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy district which is a quasi govt agency like the Adirondack park Authority (APA) in NY. It holds a huge amount of land across the Muskingum watershed and across 12 counties.

All counties have web based tax and property logs. Look up Muskingum watershed as the owner of property, pick some big parcels (many parcels may make up an area so don't be fooled). Cross reference with GIS maps and you have a piece of public land that you can almost claim as your own. I have.

You can also hook up with holmes limestone or other mining operations for hunting access.

  8. We hunt Moose River plains and see Bear sign and no real bears. I have to admit that oftentimes we hang near the trails by camp and don't get way out too much. Social event...

We roasted a turkey one night, trash can turkey style, and left carcass out all night. Nothing, I mean nothing touched it. Pretty discouraging.

The area is well populated with grouse. Maybe a few of those will do.

  9. Hot water, friction. I use sabot Barnes TMZ load where plastic contacts barrel, no copper. I wash threads with toothbrush and blast with compressed air from compressor. Follow with Rem Oil. Put plug back in and store muzzle down in my safe (keeps plug from filling with oil if I use too much).

More importantly, I use Blackhorn 209 powder substitute. That stuff burns very clean and I can shoot unlimited shots without cleaning in between. Just clean at the end of the day.

  10. I went to Moose river plains Sept 28-30th. It was a short trip that was fun for all. We had a Moose come through our camp area early Sunday morning and saw a ton of turkey. I saw alot of deer late at night near Woodgate on my way in on Rt 28.

My father, 2 bother-in-laws, 3 nephews. and myself attended and had a good time shooting targets, hiking, and hunting. My nephews are a little young to hunt but carried BB guns for good show and to teach muzzle and rifle control. They also practiced crossing barriers, creeks, etc. while carrying in a group of hunters.

    Good times.

  11. I know this is a beautiful deer that I would love to drop in a heartbeat. The trouble is that every buck I have seen and had the fantastic opportunity to walk up upon seems to get a little smaller with every step I take.

    Beautiful deer.

  12. Purchased mine 2000-2001 for $500 lifetime sportsman. I moved out of state later that year. If I were to purchase a hunting license and bear stamp at that time non-res $125 >>>4 year payoff. Ths year's price $140 hunting and $50 bear stamp >> 2-3 year payoff.

Oh yeah, I get two spring and two fall turkey tags which is an additional $50 non-res.

It really payed off as each year I have hunted in NYS and most years I hunt Bear. I should have purchased the additional archery and muzzleloader tags when I had the chance. I am opposed to this crazy taxation of my hunting implements used. I don't think I would pay to use a muzzleloader when I feel it is a right.
