  1. does that mean the biggest buch you have taken to date is a 4 or 5 point? No its means that I took nothing the year before. I don't shoot spikes or 4pts. I start at 6pt or better. I will shoot a doe or two with my bow, but that so I have venison passing or taking a small racked buck will do nothing to the gene pool of a free ranging wild herd. The racks of a 1.5 year old is no indication of it's potential I said nothing about a 1.5 yr old deer. why do you assume an 2+ yr old deer won't have a shit rack. some deer only produce spike or 4pts. AR will allow these tard deer to survive and breed. Shoot them if you want...the stronger smarter deer will survive the march of the pumpkins. wait 4 days walk in a few miles find thick cover and hunt a week or more, you'll get a good buck
  2. I also use light fields and agree with other posters that the deer and in many cases bear don't go far. Maybe 20 to 30 yrds tops. Lots just drop in their tracks. I did have a bear go about 60 yards once, but never had animal go more than that. But I only shoot standing animals (no runners) and have a very accurate slug gun with a 3x to 7x scope. Furthest shot was 120yrds at an 8pt and he only went 20 yrds
  3. There are pros / cons and good people on both sides of the issue, but if you hunt for venison, you soon find that you can boil those horns all you want, you still won't get soup. I'm against AR's because I believe smaller less desirable bucks will survive and breed. Deer with better genes will be shot and not be available to breed. I've taken plenty of tens and eights off of public land (Putnam and Duchess)...it just takes time in the stand and the willingness to pass on spikes / 4pts. Most of the hunters are out of the woods within 4 days of opening day where I hunt. They shot their does or spike and are now home. Just wait, the big boys tend to survive the annual march of the pumpkins. Walk a few MILES in find some thick nasty cover and you’ll get a large buck. I've been using the following method for years. I take no deer smaller than the deer the year before. If I shot a 6pt last year, I'll shoot a 8 pt this year. If I don't see a 8pt, than I shoot nothing. next year I start at a 6 point.
  4. Wooly - I've been quoted price per opening and then by hr. Opening is $1400. In this context an opening is a tub (water in and out). Also gotten prices per hour $100 to $150 per hr. I could do the work in roughly 25 to 35 hrs (but I'm slower than some) The house is completely open. just studs. The sewer line is in the house, water supply is in. roughly running 400 pex (water), 300 pex heat. 80 feet of drains. 40 feet of vents...hook up pex to furance The above said, I just was trying to get an idea on opening pricing V. hourly pricing. with 2 baths (6 opening), one kitchen (1 opening), thats roughly 10K before the furance. so I'm not trying to get a precise quote. just a ballpark. 10K seem like a lot considering all the materials are there. Unfortuately the town won't allow me to do the work and still get a CO. Maybe I'll do it, and get a licensed plumber to sign off. But I suspect the plumber will want 500 to 1000. if the whole job is perhaps less than 4000, I would let the plumber do it and move onto other things. Thanks
  5. I’m trying to guestimate the cost of rough plumbing an addition I’m doing. I knocked down part of a house and rebuilt it. I did most the work (foundation, framing windows, roof, siding, doors, ect) myself with buddies. But the town is now telling me I need a licensed plumber to rough it in. I have all the materials (pex, pvc, toilets, valves, tubs, furnace, etc…) It’s two baths, kitchen, two garden hose outlets, an existing hot water furnace for baseboard heat / hot water. I might do the work myself and pay a plumber to sign off on it, but before I do this, I was wondering what roughing it in might cost. It might be quicker to just pay someone. Thanks
  6. It happened about 2 miles from my house. It was guy riding a bicycle. Tons of deer in that part of North Salem, Also tons of bicycle riders (also horses) on the roads. I can’t stand them when they are riding 20 to 50 in a pack (fox hunters w/ dogs and horses are worse), but it’s terrible that the guy died. Maybe some of the folks with 4+ areas of land will open it up to bow hunters, but I doubt it. RIP
  7. if the budget is $200 and you want something that will last, then look for a used stihl, husqvarna or jonsered. if you just want something to use once or twice a year that might last a few years polane, echo or any of the sears/home depot $200 saw will be good enough
  8. I'm right handed, but shoot lefty. Teach her to shoot left handed. I think she'll be happier in the long run if she starts to shoot left handed... here's a simple test you can have her do...http://www.wikihow.com/Determine-Eye-Dominance

  10. It's actually a well known fact. just google 'Wounded Knee Massacre'. You'll see what happened. depending on the story you believe, some will say a deaf indian started it, other said the US troopers, just wanted to kill indians. But one fact is not debatatable....The US governement wanted the indians off their lands...there was gold/silver and other resources that powerful men wanted.

  12. here's another benefot of the unsafe act http://www.infowars.com/new-york-police-confiscating-firearms-from-people-takin-anti-anxiety-medication/ The New York State Police are suspending the handgun permits of people in the state who are prescribed anti-anxiety medication, according to Jim Tresmond of the Tresmond Law Firm in Hamburg, New York. Tresmond Law specializes in firearm litigation. “We are representing a client right now who is impacted by this onerous activity of the government,” Tresmond told WBEN, a news talk radio station in Buffalo, New York. “We were flummoxed by this whole matter,” the attorney said. “The HIPPA act is supposed to prevent this kind of thing from happening. It’s a gross invasion of our privacy rights.” The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Privacy Rule establishes national standards to protect individuals’ medical records and other personal health information, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Tresmond said the New York State Police are responsible for taking action against legal firearms owners. “Based on information the county received from the New York State Police, they’ve suspended the permits. The State Police instigates the proceedings.” Section 9.46 of the NY SAFE Act of 2013 authorizes therapists, doctors, nurses and social workers to report patients they determine may engage in conduct that may result in harm to self or others. If a determination is made that the person in question poses a threat, the provision permits the government to confiscate firearms. The provision is a direct violation of the Fourth Amendment and the legal standard of probable cause. Experts said many mental health providers will likely ignore the provision. NY SAFE was passed by the New York State Legislature on January 15, 2013, and was signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo the same day

  15. I think she needs to read this out load a few times at her next press conferance: I AM WE TODD DID I AM SOFA KING WE TODD DID
  16. Not sure if anyone shared this yet, but here's a nice reply to Jim Carey's video
  17. Doc - I think we see the world through different prisms; mine was forged through nearly 25 years of building marketing databases fortune 500 companies. I’m not sure of your background. I pointed out the downside as I see them. You interpreted my issues as unrelated to a DB. They are not! The biggest issue is EASE of access to this data. Money doesn’t get spent and databases don’t get build unless there is a very specific application or question that needs to be answered. The question I believe that is trying to be answered is WHO owns a GUN! One entity will have the answer to this question if this DB is built. Remember what happened in Westchester / Rockland County as Opposed to Putnam. Putnam refused the foil request. Do you know what it is like to work for a fortune 500 company and get called into the HR department because some jackass read your name in the paper? Being asked by your HR folks how are things by going? Having your co-workers ask why do you need a pistol? I have built dozens..Maybe hundreds of large and mid-size DB’s in my career. Each and every one of them gets expanded to fulfill other needs that were not part of the orginal scope of requirements. If it’s built it will be used. It will be government property. Owned by the tax payers of the state. Lawyers will get access to it, special interests will get access. Pro-gun groups and anti-gun groups will get access….YES I know these folks can foil for the county lists already. But it is now a pain in the ass to foil every county and receive the data in 100’s of different formats (word doc, excel, printouts, photo copies). By having the lists at the county level access is hard to get. I hope the above helps you. I hope you open up you thought process and set aside your preconceived conclusions. But I suspect this won’t help you at all. Like I said, you’re mostly likely kinder better human being than I will ever be, more trusting in those who wish to control you. I’m done commenting on this topic. "The revelation of thought takes men out of servitude into freedom". --Ralph Waldo Emerson
  18. Doc if you don't see the path we're moving towards, than you're either blind to the ways of the world or just full of hopeful optimism. Perhaps you’re a kinder better human being than I will ever be, more trusting in those who wish to control you. I don’t know…I pointed out the downside, you just didn’t want to open your eyes. I can’t help you. God bless
  19. Down sides are: (a) You will end up with a yearly tax on all your handguns. The state is broke..It needs money...these people think guns are bad, they'll try to make it that you can't afford a handgun (b). It will be expanded to long guns. - Again the state is broke. It needs money...these people think guns are bad, they'll try to make it that you can't afford a long guns © Any FOIL restrictions will be challenged to ignored - Others will get the list (d) What business is it of theirs to know what we own - they are our public servants, not our masters (e) Guns will be confiscated – (e1).suppose your neighbor or ex-wife gets mad at you or better yet an abused wife get a gun to protect herself from her ex-husband. All the pissed off neighbor or abusive ex-husband has to do is go to court and get a temporary restraining order against you. Now the police show up and take all your guns. The 120 lbs. wife is now DEFENSELESS against her 200lb ex-husband. You now have a dead wife (e2) Guns that were once legal 7+ round mags, pistol grip shot guns will be found and taken from you. Doc – I really enjoy this site and reading the comments people leave, but I’m starting suspect that a large percentage of my fellow gun owners are naively ignorant as to the nature of the their fellow man (politicians)
  20. I believe the local pistol permit databases are under the control of the individual county clerks. These county clerks decide who has access to the data and for what. Compare Westchester / Rockland to Putnam. Putnam's clerk refused the journal News request for the data. Westchester / Rockland gave the data to the Journal news the pistol permit lists. As for savings one central DB could be cheaper, but one entity would decide the fate of the data. Image the data being shared with Peta, a gun control group or other organizations. The questions to ask is why does the state government want this list? Whats the purpose? Could they expand it to include a long gun registry? Use it to send out yearly registration bills (taxes)?
  21. Put it this way a 10 million name database with transactional data (such as a major sporting goods retailer uses) would cost about $500,000 to $1 million. About 5 to 10 cents per name. This database would have append demographics (age, income, education level, ect...). the NYS handgun DB would basically be a excel spreadsheet with names, address and types of guns, ect.... I reduce my quote..I could outsource this to India and get it done for about $50,000...or China and get it for about $30,000. BTW - it WILL BE outsourced to India or China and some policically connected jackass will make roughly a $27.8 million profit
  22. I build databases for a living. I have build DB's for many of the largest companies out there. I could build this handgun DB for less than $500,000. ...but I won't. what the hell do they need 28 million for?
  23. Have all the law enforcement and security guards issues been resolved with the safe act? I know a while back the guards at the local nuclear power plant were upset because they were in violation. If the law enforcements problems haven't been resolved, couldn’t we flood the hotline and report all the cops and security guards. Might be a nice and legal way to annoy these fools and make some cash all at the same time
