Deer population - Is it growing or is it over hunted?
Geno C replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
in all my areas of hunting it does not appear to me that there is a smaller population of deer. If anything, where i hut in a few differnt counties upstate there seems to not be as much hunters in the woods anymore. i mean on the island theres hunters all over but i dont see there being a small population of deer on the island eaither. i think if anything the deer population that i can visually see seems to be on the uprise, IMO... Isnt that why a few years ago they moved opening day of gun to a Sat for the simple reason to encourage more hunters for opening week? Due to most having off on weekends and it being difficult for hunters to get off of work? i mean thats prob not the main reason for making opening day a Sat but i thought it had something to do with it?? -
where did you see or find the list for pistol permit holders? im not seeing anything...

I was reading that parts of NY has cases of EHD?EHD (Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease)- Im supprised to hear that, ive heard of EHD out west but not in NY... But come to think about it ive been seeing alot of summer picks with flies around the deer and covoering the deer. i wonder if those can be biting midges? ive heard deer can become irratic and die from this disease and when you start to see dead deer in and around water sources, its a sure sign of EHD. anyone read anything or going thorugh this in there hunting grounds?

Foggy morning bucks and others...

WOW those are really nice pics! -
Well i went back out tonight, i did see about 15 Deer before this huge front came in. The weather was getting ready to lay down a serious thinder storm. I did get a chance to sit for about an hour and 15 minutes. I saw 2 other bucks on the feild tonight that i have not seen before. Id say one was in the 120s and the other coming close to that. They picked me out while i was making my way in for the sit, i did not see them until they both had me picked lol. I did not see Mr Big nor brownie tonight but i was very suprised to see the 2 new bucks and also the regular bacholer group. I will say my cannon point and shoot is a POS and i can not take clear pics out to 75 yards and beyond. i will be picking up my brother Nikon D80 tomorrow and hopefully take a quick crash course from hmi on it before heading out to the farm again... He doesnt have his 105mm lense but he does have his 70mm lense which should be great for atleast 100 - 150 yards clear id say. inspite of the front tonight deer movement was great, i epceted to see a good amount of deer feeding right before this storm made its way through. hopefully i will have some nice shots from tomorrow night if i make it out there. I get so amped when i see Mr Big in the foodplot. He is just one of those deer that you know is something special and i keep thinking he has over a month to grow. Iam getting so excited just thinking of how the opener of bow season is going to pan out. If i do not see him tomorrow night i am going to back out for a week or so before heading out tothe foodplot again.

going to try and get out there after work again and hopefully get the drop on them before they make there way out to the field. they beat me to it yesterday and i got there at 7, so... we will see. really want to get some trail cams out and see what else is running around. I will tell you, i really am excited going into this season, i am hoping Mr Bigs patterns dont change tomuch by Oct 1st because i plan on hanging a set right where i always see him and hopfully i can get the drop on him that day. Ive seen him on 2 different wind directions and he hangs on the same side of the field. Brownie is a goodlooking 3 - 3.5 year old at 130+ but i hope i can have a shot or even see mr big come Oct 1st.

i like the design, i think it should be alittle more stretched out long ways then a simple square. but it looks cool

i have been getting alittle more picky in the past 2-3 years. ive seen the buck in my area and i know what is around, so i know there are really nice deer in my area... not that im a head hunter i just like to give some of the smaller deer a chance to grow. in the 120s to me is a very nice deer. anything in the 130 and up is a bonus obviously. if i dont take a decent buck during the season and do not get a chance to use my tag, no worries. i love taking does so i always have meat in the freezer. i love to just spend the time in my stand and get a chance to see some bucks i have cought on cam during the year and also see the bucks i havnt gotten a chance to see. Its fun eitherway.

no trail cams are setup yet... i will have a few out this week. the top 2 pics are used through my binos lol , all the pics look kind of funny the zoom factor really takes away from the pic quality and the lack of light. the one pic got cut off where you see the deer trotting off. you can see one of the smaller bucks in that pic but Mr Big was cut off, ill reload that pic. the pics of Brownie did not come out great but he was bedded about 40-50 yards fro Mr Big in the food plot. we will see what happens tonight.

It's true. When you can consistantly drill the target at long distances, the confidence at reasonable shooting distances is increased. Besides it kind of fun watching the arrow hang out there forever while it covers the longer distances. I remember when we used to shoot the 80 yard shot on a field course with recurves. The arrow almost seemed to be in slow motion. That's just plain fun. Also, if we could score anything on that shot, we went into the next closer shots with a new level of confidence. Doc haha thats pretty funny... i usually practice at the 30 - 35 range. i deff want to kick that up to the 50 - 60 range. you practice out that far with the compund?

thats great john, youll be happy in the long run. i should have done way back when it was like 450$... i will bring myself to spend the beans one year lol. howmuch was it b4 the jump? in the 7- 800 area?

^^ thats pretty cool. i figured it would be some sort of rock climbing getup. However i would have to go with a gut instinct that says slim to none do hunters use a setup like that. i could be wrong but i am very curious to see if hunters actually take the time to hang a set like that? anyone???

Well i shot over to the farm shortly after work in hopes of seeing a deer i have been calling "Mr Big". I think it suits him considering i am estimating him at 140 - 145" already... I seem to be seeing him everytime i go out there and i always see him with a bachelor group of bucks. 2 or 3 of the deer are in the 120s and theres another buck i call brownie due to his rack being pretty dark, i am estimating him in the 130 - 135" area. Both are very beautiful bucks! tonight i saw around 15 - 20 deer in the food plot tonight. Im sorry for the very horrible pictures. For some reason i couldnt get myself and the camera to jive very well. I will be going back tomorrow night in hopes of getting some better pics. i am really dyeing to see Mr Big up close.

wow that is pretty strange... and he smelled bad??

i never have... i always break my knocks from grouping but never robin hooded any arrows. damn lol...

my question still remains... the chances of being wheel chair bound are good - trees stands aside. you can hurt yourself in the field of hunting with out having even been in a tree... i mean we carry guns in the woods crying out loud and having said that other people who are not all there carry guns in the woods, you can fall on the terrain and hurt yourself, fall a knife, get attacked by a mtn lion or bear, get mistaken for game. i mean the factors are there. you can not knock people for doing opposite of what you do. there is NO LAW stating one should wear a harness. If a hunter is aware of ANY possibilities and makes a conscious effort to remain safe in any situation, then whats the problem? do you think every hunter wears a harness? i dont and i dont knock the ones who do slash dont. like i stated earlier, ive seen stands setup by hunters and it really points out the obvious as to why accidents do occur in the field. or why people fall out of stands and i know for sure i am not the only one who has seen stands lopsided and leaning forward or on a small dia tree i mean c mon if i had a stand like that id strap in too and possibly duct tape my ass to the seat but i do have half a brain on setting a stand up and like i said i do it with my sfatey and best interest in mind.

yes... maybe with guys who carry alot of gear or set a stand up with an odd way to climb in and out. ive seen guys set some stands up that you would have to almost wish your way in it. and besides tho, if people fall out of stands mostly on the way in or getting out of a stand how is a safety harness going to keep you from hitting the ground??? dont most people strap in once settled in and unstrap when your getting out of your stand? how do you remained strapped in while your getting in and out of a stand? unless you have a rock climbing setup of some sort, id think if you climbing in and your going to fall, your going to fall... If you have a nice stand witha plat form and seat with arm rails and a gun rest then maybe someone should tell me why one who feels comfy in a tree would need to wear one? infact i bet there has been people who have fell out of a tree while climbing down and un strapping there safety harnesses.. have you seen some of these harnesses? there like spider webs and i can see alot of people trying to mess with those things in the dark while 20ft up, remedy for disaster, unless you have the $$ for those nice vest types. eitherway i dont usually wear them. my stands are easy to climb in and out of and they are usually very nice stands. Trust me i take my safety in account overall, its always on my mind... BTW im not being rude at all... i am just trying to see how a safety harness will help you when climbing in and out of a stand...
