  1. Nothing happens quickly, especially as it relates to such a controversial topic as gun ownership/rights. Make no mistake, there is an attack on our freedom and gun rights is a battle that is on going, however it will be masked by scare tactics, confusion and miss-information. Personally (IMO) democrats and republicans are at the end of the day puppets for special interests, elitists and big business. Its not a matter of if it will happen it’s a matter of when and how.
  2. Yes gun crimes may be at an all time low, however I attribute that more to NYC Police and there efforts such as stop and frisk (currently under review btw). The regulations and restrictions does nothing to criminals who will go out of state for illegal guns.
  3. what tips do you all use to judge distance when shooting. sometimes I question which pins to use especially if I think the deer is in that in between yardage. Shot clean over a 5 pointer last year at what what I thought was 20 yrds, after I paced it off it was 10yrds.
  4. Yea man, opening day when I was in highschool was practically a day off, half the class and even the teachers were out hunting. Thats what got me involved, my family doesn't hunt but my dads coworker took a liking to me and since he only had girls decided to show me what he knew. However NY is sooo different, so much private land, and since i'm not from here plus living in NYC surrounding by non-hunters makes it tough to find hunting opportunities. Thats why public land is so pressured, but i'm finding you have to really put in some years to know a particular area before you can figure it out.
  5. Elmo, love UofM. However I grew up in southwest MI, Kalamazoo. Same school as Derek Jeter (not name dropping). i've been reading your thread, seems like your hunting hard, atta boy!
  6. check this link, it will be your friend and best resource as you figure it out. Details places to hunt as you asked. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/hunting.html as for practicing archery on state land, not sure, would be interesting to know also.
  7. Im a NYC guy that went through the brain damage of getting permits for my long guns, wont even attempt to try for pistol. Overall it wasn't that bad, to many restrictions though. Apparently if you do get a permit for pistol their is a website where your name will be logged. Technically employers or anyone else who wishes to look up can then do so. I bought pepper spray for my wife to carry in her purse, found out later it also was illegal.
  8. Thanks alot guys. GreeneHunter - you aint kidding, first chance I get i'm moving upstate. Just have to convince the wife... 13Bvet - I'll look into those places, maybe a back up plan. thanks
  9. When I moved to New York, I thought there would be noone to talk about hunting with....Glad to find this website. Im 30 yrs old, origionally from Southwest Michigan, moved here 6 yrs ago, now live in Queens, work in a 50 sq ft cubicle in Manhattan, dream of being in the woods. In MI I did some shotgun hunting deer and pheasant hunting however haven't got into the hang of NY hunting yet. Trust me its a lot more difficult than in MI, I really respect you guys out here, it isn't easy. Picked up Archery 3 yrs ago since I left all my guns in MI (actually bought a few after going through NYC screening process....not easy! ) Still haven't taken a NY deer. Dont own any land, still figuring out the public land scene, plus only have a limited amount of days to hunt due to family/work obligations. Anyways, wanted to say hello, and get to know you guys and learn from you NY hunters. Plan to hunt Fahnestock State Park this year, did some camping/scouting this summer, looks like it will be difficult, plenty of deer sign but alot of hiking those hills. I expect alot of hunting pressure as well. Any kind souls hunting that land that would care to share their knowledge would be much appreciated, got my own gear, am very respectful, thoughtful and always share my meat! lol. I understand hunters like to keep their sweet spots close to their vest, haha. Anyways, good luck this season, weather starting to get cool. love it.
