Crossbow/gun and whitetail population
Bowshotmuzzleloader replied to nodeerhere's topic in Deer Hunting
Doc Im one of the crazys that thinks this is a type of bow you know with a string, limbs and pointy stick, Im still looking where to load the gun powder and lead. Must be the trigger and stock that confuses people but I guess thats really no different than the trigger I wear around my wrist when I bow hunt ...There lots of sayings you know you can take the trailer out of the park but not the park out of the trailer, can put lipstick on a pig its still a pig,, its still a string and a stick.. I dont make the laws or rules and if the DEC says I can use a weapon that in my eyes is very similar and has the same components that the natives used,, a string and a stick then well why not,, if it improves my odds to harvest a deer when the opportunity arises why does that bother anyone.. The OPs original question was how will it affect the whitetail population and I feel it will have little effect... My son choose to hunt with his bow at the season end where I choose not to he could of used his crossbow he didnt,, he still made his own choice.. -
Happy B Day anyone that spends as much time in the woods as you is well respected in my book and those sandwiches you pack,, oh boy,,, good season and many more ....

I'm a bow hunter,,, but I don't dictate what others do,,, if the law says I can do it then I will, if I choose too,,, if you don't like it there are 49 other states to choose from ... -

Put your money where your mouth is !!!! Use a crossbow during gun season if you think its a "gun",,, bet that will never happen and if you did Id be willing to bet that you wouldn't still be calling it a gun.... -

If I lived in Ohio I personally would concentrate on taking my one buck with a bow or crossbow, seeing the gun season is so short, it only makes sense to see a rise in the archrey take IMO.. It would be interesting to see the buck to doe harvest ratios for each year that would accompany that graph.. -

Im not sure the deer heards would be any different ? One would have to assume there will be many more hunters in the woods if this is allowed, I personally don't think the numbers will increase that much to make an impact maybe im wrong,, if a bow hunter that is allowed to harvest a buck does so with a crossbow whats the difference or impact with what weapon he chooses to do it with... I will still choose to use both. If the DEC deems the take to high then they can adjust the regulations... -

With a screen name like nodeerhere I would think you would be all for the crossbow,, they come with special magic charms that also make the deer appear in front of you when you say abracadabra.. -

Ive done deer drives with a compound bow. It would be no different and unsuccessful although it was mainly to entertain ourselves but it is possible.. To anyone who hasnt hunted with a crossbow accuracy goes way down without a rest or offhand as they are front heavy, they are and can be difficult to maneuver in a tree stand situation with the horizontal limbs,, they are not miraculous killing machines that people think they are.. They offer distinct advantages and disadvantages in certain situations.. -

In the coming years there will be a lot people that will need to change there screen names when they jump ship and buy a crossbow. -
I once found a golf ball growth in an old mature doe I shot, when cut open was a slug,,, must of been a bad brand of slugs ? Strange things happen in the field ,,, its tough in my opinion to say that brand of broadheads is no good.. Just saying ...,

Looks like a long hail of mary shot just not enough energy to pentrate fully at the point of impact, it obviously opened,, who knows how long it was being tugged in all directions before the shaft came loose, moving the broadhead in out and around.. Of course theres always the possibility of a blow gun ...

What do you guys think
Bowshotmuzzleloader replied to Bowshotmuzzleloader's topic in General Hunting
Well Chris this is the reason for this post as I've shot alot of deer and I've wondered if they have actually been 2 1/2 year old deer but just late born yearlings as it take a whole other year for them to be equal to their brothers,,, I know rack size and conditions matter from area to area but this seems to be not the usual 1 1/12 fro this property.. -
I shot this buck years ago but I always wonder if it was a late born yearling and it's actually a not quite developed 2 1/2 year old what's your guys thoughts ..

Well gents no morning hunt for me but will be doing the night hunts till the end of the season, took tonight off the wind and snow was just too crazy here... Good luck
-
I'm not sure how true this is but I've been told stories of deer being hit by cars knocked to the ground or off there feet breaking their rack on the road while not being mortally hurt and running off .

I saw nine deer today!!!! Two at 11:00 while driving to another job site on the side of the road, then four behind another building at 12:30 then three walking into my stand at 3:30 or should I say three watching me walk in the woods taunting me .. Then nothing on watch Lol All does,,,seem to be moving quite a bit I was suprised at the amount of tracks,, looking for one more flattop and calling it quits .. Back at it tomorrow's after work Good luck ...
