  1. Doc said it the best...we have 2 different areas...here at home 73acres and the deer population is down compared to past years...last year.... mind you..... I don't know a ton of the ppl around here but figured 1 squire mile around me...and counted over 150 hunters ..that I know of...and there are more...most properties range 10-100 acres in size...and about half of us bow and muzzle load as well...on average if you want to try for extra doe tags we can get 4 doe tags a year..on top of reg tags...2 miles away they are lucky to get 1 doe tag a year... Down at camp is a whole different story...we own 68 acres there and are surround on 3 sides by hundreds of restricted hunting preserve acreage...then nearly in passable 50-100 acres parcels in the valley.... doe permits are some times hard to get ...but very low hunting pressure...so bigger herds ..but there is no farm land and STEEP terrain choked with brush (buckthorn and thorn apple) Yepp depends on where you are
  2. lately...I've found that I can make bedding areas with out even thinking about it....Just mow a trail to be able to sneak through high brush to my stand...deer bedding on the trail ...or I put a stand up in march...went to check it Tues. ....golden rod is chest high no trail but...several beds under and with in feet of stand....Don't tell me they aren't smart or know whats up
  3. Seen any thing like this? I took this young guy out as a mercy kill on a doe tag during archery season some years ago...He was going to get a pass...But then he walked under the stand and eewwhhh...he smelled like death ...so I took him out...he went ten yrds and dropped...he had blk goo on his back side and around the wth fur there....What do you think it was? ...I'll tell you my thoughts later...by the way it was so nasty I didn't even want to touch him...donned gloves and dragged him a couple dozen yards away from the stand to a deadfall...weeks later still nothing had touch him...
  4. I couldn't agree with your post more Doc...bow season is the only time I hit the woods with out blaze orange camo...and hat...mittens...ect...and would love to see it in written law...the other thing I really think should be pressed is teaching these young gun hunters..I've all but given up on the older ones...that you should never pull up and start shooting at a deer running full board across a field or in the woods....actually that's why.... IMO.... every hunter should be required to bow hunt at least one year before being allowed a gun license...let them learn deer can get close and they do stop moving...or at least they walk...and if one doesn't... there will be another out there that will. ppl around here wont do chores with out some orange on and some have there kids walk to the bus stop with hunter orange on...
  5. Sounds like a good plan...Good luck this season
  6. Mix of Ryes and clover if not too dry.....trifiols seem to grow every where
  7. Just know it's older Suzuki and not nearly as bulky as the newer models...kinda compact..lol
  8. First ...my husband drove to the edge of the woods to give me a ride back to camp...I was on the back...holding my unloaded gun in one hand and his waste in the other...he hit a bump and accidentally the gas as well doing a wheely ..I slide off the back burying the barrel of my gun in snow and mud and the tire of the 4 wheeler grabbed my rt pac boot and shredded it like it had gone thru a paper shredder...lucky it left my foot first... The second was in my drive...and home alone...we have a near vertical embankment lining the drive way...the 4 wheeler was in the drive and I went to move it...backing up... the throttle stuck and I... in a panic ...gunned it more...up the embankment backwards I went and it flashed through my mind I'd go end over end...killing my self ...I yanked the bars and turned it side ways... then with all my might lunged off the side off the machine in a face dive across the stone drive...the second I stopped I rolled but not quick enough because the Suzuki was rolling on me...I managed to get my rt leg up and as it landed on my left shin bone I kicked out with my rt leg keeping it from rollin onto my hips....I gave it another heave and freed my lft leg and rolled away as it landed upside down next to me leaking gas...I managed to crawl to the house and call for help....my leg looked pretty bad for a long time and I to this day Istill have and lrg indentation where the back rack hit it...my husbands friend was the first to show...nearly panicked when he saw it...the year before I'd been bed ridden for 3 mos with a very bad break in the same leg...I refused to go to the hospital for this one...it eventually healed.
  9. we were on the porch and the sun hit him just right...revealing him spying on us....lol
  10. In the southern part bear opens same day as deer archery....a week later in gun....I went to camp and the apples and acorns are looking great...also they've been in the wild honeybee tree....here at home...apples are so but soybean plots are great and I fertilized the bramble area...some canes are 8ft tall and I have an acre of heavily fruited bushes...only a few oaks are producing as far as I can see...we have 200 oaks of varying ages.....
  11. All written down...they passed the? around so much I have a bunch of Phone #'s...including a private cell #
  12. I shoot a 28" barreled browning 20ga. using bead front bead sight...and 3" Brenekes...they are the only slug I'll shoot and have gotten the guys to switch...they are shooting 16 ga... I am a shoulder shooter and have taken most deer at 50-70 but have know problem using my gun rest and dropping a deer at a 100yrds...I've taken several doe and two buck at that distance...they never went more than 30yrds at that distance ...closer and they are down were they are shot.
  13. Good for you Doc...the guy that was killed next to us...had full camo...so didn't the shooter...a buck ran full board between them and the shooter opened up like he was shoot skeet....Why nor to shoot at RUNNING deer...reason they nailed the shooter...but not hard enough...that group was out hunting the following Sat...
  14. Listen...lets put this to bed now...One.... As you can see from posts and pics I luv to hunt...and anything about hunting ... I have had and continue with a few of the neighbors... some pretty nasty problems with a few pretty nasty "hunters"...that terms used lightly....if there is a subject that I have an opinion on I like many others base my opinions in part on our experience... I don't micro manage others opinions ...but if you choose to mine fine than I'll answer honestly In my area I would feel threatened walking on my land in the dark ...knowing that some of the "Yahoos" that wildly shoot at running deer ...wound and gut shoot deer in gun season ....I've had to put many down... wouldn't hesitate to sneak in during dark hours to get a shot at a buck using a cross bow...I never said any of them had 2 brain cells to rub together Any questions? :
  15. every day I kick a ever growing flock out of the field i planted late corn in...not to hopeful any survives...heres some past pics...
  16. Thats what I call the small house hold sized steel toothed rake...not like the big closely toothed landscape rake
  17. cannon sure shot...the bucks fighting at one point were very close...it was just as it was getting light and there was a light fog....most deer I get pics of are between 20 and 100 yards...hers a few more
  18. glad you asked...I spent a lot of time calling around the states DEC offices and got different answers....The law states no more that 1.5 fluid oz of lure are allowed...see I wanted to do honey burns ....so here is what one DEC officer...capt told me that once you take say a rag or wood chips and soak them in say honey or bacon grease...they are no longer fluid ...so much more can be used to burn...or hung....now I called reg 8 reg 9 and they even had me call some poor guy that I caught heading out the door on a mid west Elk hunt....they didn't know he was on vacation...but he was still nice enough to answer my ? .....I quess thats the loop hole...but...It depends on what DEC reg and officers your dealing with...so call them...because I said wait I don't want reg 9 saying I'm good to go and reg 8 arresting me......
  19. For those piles you see...just by "picking rocks" by hand and using the blue wheel barrel ...but in the narrow ...smaller plots I used both a landscape and a stone rake....for the bigger areas I am going to due a few more areas and then rent a york rake for the tractor...was going to buy but ...I'm cheap it takes me about 3 yrs to get an are in shape...in that time I plant buckwheat in the spring and braccs in the fall....with the exception of the corn area...by the way I plant feed corn...7.50 for a 50# bag and this is what I got from a july planting last year
  20. Yes we have a real problem with yotes here...several years ago I use to keep my hunting clothes in the goat barn for scent purposes....I walked past the goats and headed down a wide lane way to my stand...I heard crunching behind me and saw what looked to be the size of my female shepherd...10 or so yrds out it turned and went into the slashings...coming up along side of me...more crunching in the snow behind me...there was another....Turned to see the first cross a few yards in front of me as the second went into slashings...I was so scared I almost for got I had my gun in my hand...When my brain returned I shook the action and All went silent for a moment..... then I heard them moving up hill from me and ran for my stand...sat there listening to them yelp back and forth ...the 2 behind me and 3 on the ridge infront of me I got down at day light to see rather lrg tracks...call the DEC and explained what happened and asked when did they start attacking ppl!? He told me they hunt in packs 2-4 usually and that before attacking they circle their prey...I was "Breakfast" They had killed 2 of or goats....DEC had estimated that those were between 65 and 85 #'s ...then the went after our neighbors sheep up the hill and turkey and chickens down the hill. My hunting clothes smelled of goat...thus the "breakfast" comment...needless to say I don't do that anymore...we lose a lot of kids(goat) to yotes
  21. That is a commercial seed called Sucra Seed...it is a high sugar rye and orchard grass with avondale? clovers...this particular batch is called Beef Bank and I had specific reasons for going with it but they sell wild life seed as well call Sweet spot http://www.sucraseed.com
  22. I've been charged ...by deer...circled by yote and I went to camp to bow hunt bear...left gear in truck that was backed up to cabin door....at 4 am I decided to get gear and not to turn on the outside light...opened door took 2 steps and opened passenger door of the Dodge..The dome light came on and I hear HUMPP....HUMPH Oh..that's not good ...I leaned around the cab and standing/leaning on truck is the bear I came to hunt! Ya well brain was yelling jump in truck ...make for door...but the feet weren't in the conversation and there I stood...listening as he plopped to the ground and rustle through the oak leaves to the back of truck...My mind now yelling if he rounds that bed your in trouble move!..hhmm nope...I saw him moving away up hill to the woods...turned grabbed gear and hopped back inside I showered ate and out the door I went in the dark...light in pocket...bow in one hand and my trusty little gutting knife in the other...I get about 100 ft from cabin and the woods behind the cabin erupt in scream/growls ...snapping trees and a god awful scream...i TRUELY BELIEVE i STOOD IN THAT DRIVE GROWING HAIR JUST SO IT COULD STAND ON END...AS SUDDEN AS IT STARTED IT STOPPED...THAT WAS A LONG MILE HIKE TO MY STAND AND FAST...oops sorry about caps....I sat 12 hours that day and never saw even a deer
