Yeah, I tried everything. Scarecrows, lots of kids pin wheels stuck in the ground and even leaving a radio tuned onto a rap station. Nothing worked until I tried the fence. It's a steep investment the first year, but the wallet feels better the next. Corn & soybeans would be wiped out also. This works !! The pigtail posts are only 3' off the ground, nose high

My turnip plots were a big draw when I first started planting about 20 years ago. Over the years, the deer got educated and started devouring the seedlings when they got 4" tall, they would just wipe them out almost overnight. A couple of years ago I watched a video about putting up an electric fence around the plot. Two 1" ribbons run along side each other, 6' apart. I tried this last year. and I'm back in business. Deer stay out until I take it down prior to the season. I planted this plot 3 weeks ago. I know its a little early but its growing great.

Had the scare of my life today setting stands...
catskillkid replied to Hock3y24's topic in General Chit Chat
I saw this happen to a buddy of mine. He had his safety gear on also, thank God. I always pull my stands down at the end of the season. All the cables and bolts get a good coating of lithium grease when stored away and then another coating when I put them back up. Glad you are okay. Thanks for sharing, you probably saved someone's life by sharing -
I never entered any animal

Here ya go. Mule Deer from eastern plains Colorado, going back again this December Coues Deer from Sonora, Mexico, Mountain Goat from British Columbia and Stone Sheep from the Yukon. In my opinion, the hardest book animal to find and shoot is the Whitetail Deer. Still looking !!

I never had the desire to enter an animal in a score book. Although I do have four animals that qualify for B&C. Just admiring them everyday on my wall gives me the satisfaction and memories and most of all the respect the animal deserves.

TSI is a passion of mine also. The larger the tree canopy, the faster they will grow. I spend a lot of time opening up my forest so new growth can occur. Be safe ! -
Beautiful bird, Kurt does nice work

I just returned from the area this afternoon. Was grouse and rabbit hunting with a few friends. We hunted my place, kicked up a few rabbits and grouse. We only shot one bird but it was a lot of fun. Cold and windy weather is not the best for small game hunting though. You might want to look at Bear Spring Mountain Park. There are a few overgrown apple orchards off East Trout Brook Road. I've seen a few guys there over the years with bird dogs while passing through. The state has also clear cut areas to promote vegetation growth for small game cover. There is also New York City land around the Pepacton and Cannonsville Reservoirs, but I think you need a permit to hunt ? The weather forecast looks better next week

Anyone elses friends turn lame at age 40?
catskillkid replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in General Chit Chat
I agree with everyone here. Some close friends move on or pass away. I'm 64 and two of my best friends have passed on. I do think this topic is a little ironic though. I see most of your same names almost everyday when I log on. Everyone is kibitzing about the general topics of hunting or fishing and busting balls as if they are standing next to each other in the same room or driving to a hunting spot. Busting balls is truly one the most enjoyments in life. So what I'm trying to say is, All of the people on this site are close friends and social media is taking over how we meet and become friends. Because of our busy schedules, It allows us to converse when each of us has time to sit down at the computer and catch up on what everyone is up to. I do consider everyone friends, although, most of us would not know each other's faces if we passed one another in a Cabela's store -
Cabela's has it

Out of stock already

Three friends and myself went to Nebraska for another late season muzzleloader hunt a week ago. We killed 2 bucks in the 140" class and another smaller. The weather cooperated better than last year, colder. The muzz. shooting distance is further than we normaly shoot here on the east coast. Hunting big ag fields and river bottoms. I killed mine at 180 yrds my buddy shot his at 180 yrds and the other at 170 yrds. My cousin had bucks at that distance too but was not comfortable shooting that far. I'm heading to Mexico the second week in January for a Carmen Mountain whitetail buck. It's one of the smallest huntable whitetail subspecies. They are scattered in small pockets in the high desert. A 100" buck makes the book. Sorta like a Couse Deer and lives in similar terrain. Mecixo is a great place to hunt when the deer seasons here start to wind down. The weather is awesome too.

My Dad was in the 82nd Airborne, jump master sergeant, he never really talked about his service much, but did open up to me a couple of times about buddies that were lost on jumps. All of my four uncles on my mother's side of the family served in WWII. One fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the army, he never talked about this also. He never told his mother what he did, we found this out many years later after he passed away. The others served in the Navy in the Pacific. never to talk about their experiences either. Uncle Woody is buried in Arlington Cemetery. On my Dad's side, his brother served in WWII in the pacific and his ship was sunk by a Japanese torpedo, he went on to serve off the Aleutians when the Japanese invaded Alaska. Again, never talked about his time in Navy. My mother's family in Norway fought in the underground. She told me some were captured and tortured to death. Many died fighting the Germans. I was always fascinated by all of my uncle's tattoos when I was a young kid. Ships and anchors on their arms and chests. My dad had twin parachutes one forearm and Mom on the other. They are gone now, I am very proud of them all.

Monopod, bipod or tripod in ground blind
catskillkid replied to luberhill's topic in General Chit Chat
When using a ground blind, I tie a thin rope or parachute cord in the ceiling on opposite sides of the window opening. I let the rope sag to the middle of the height of the window. This creates a gun sling or hammock that I rest the forearm of the gun on. Very stable and you can rotate the muzzle for different shot angles. No fumbling for mono pods or other sticks and no clanging of sticks making noise. Nothing in the way of your feet also. Deadly. When done hunting, just roll it up and stick it in your pocket. No weight. -
When I signed on to be a member many years ago, I related this forum to reading a hunting magazine like Outdoor Life, Field & Stream or Fin & Feather. Unfortunately the print media has faded away because of the so called progress of the internet. I've very much enjoyed reading everyone's hunting experiences, pictures and related hunting and fishing stories. The Chuckle was one of the most enjoyable threads that I went to when ever I had time to look at the forum. Water Rat's posts were classic humor. Somewhere along the line the thread degraded into Chef posting crude memes that had nothing to do with outdoor activities. Just disgusting porn that was more suited on soft porn sites. I am far from a prude but if I wanted to look at porn, I would look at one of those site, not a hunting forum I would bet every dollar that I have that if I opened a porn site. I would not see any hunting related posts. I'm glad Chef got timed out again, but am in favor of his return if he cleans up his act. So that's my 2 cents. I'm sure many will disagree. So let's hear it. I have broad shoulders
