  1. I think what sets most guys off is if they feel they were personally wronged. For example, we're neighbors and you take a 150 class buck and I know you were violating a game law or 2. If I knew you were violating a game law or 2 but never shot much of anything I believed was a deer I could also shoot, well then my opinion changes right? If you don't agree with this statement then just think about what angers you more. A dead doe or a dead 150 class that could have been yours? I know hunters who do dumb things but have no bearing on my success so I give them a hard time, but not enough to ruin a friendship. I have also blown guys in who I know crossed the line and done some real dumb stuff even if it didn't directly impact me. I think we as a society are too interested in what the other guy is doing and too quick to call for action before we even know all the facts some times. We need to spend more time bettering our own houses, leading by example and making it unpopular to violate laws of any kind. I follow all game laws to the best of my ability, I've probably broken one or 2 inadvertently, and at the end of the day it's deer hunting. Losing sleep over anothers actions is silly. Particularly where you can cross an invisible state line and what's legal is no longer legal or vise versa. In those cases where baiting, 30 minutes after sunrise/sunset, dog running etc are all man made rules, then is the crime really so bad as to rat out your neighbor, friend, family member, coworker?
  2. spend $250 on a nice garmin handheld gps. Best money I ever spent to hunt public land. Also a good light climber is a must.
  3. sounds like a blend of OBR and earn a buck which I like. Might not stop some guys from reporting fake harvests, but it's a start if you hope most people have ethics.
  4. there are different levels of violation. hunting out of season, spotlighting, not tagging etc. all fall in to a different category then salt licks, 2 minutes past sunset etc. The DEC even sets different levels of fines. So the question is... is it worth starting a feud with your neighbor over just because you're a rat snitch?
  5. ECO's are like unicorns. I'm not sure they exist. I wouldn't go that route. Small tracks of private land will never see the boots of an ECO officer. Honestly, if he's using it just for a trail cam then who cares? If it's there during hunting season you may want to approach him on it in a polite respectful manner. That said, I hunt now where baiting is basically leagal/not enforced. Trust me when I say it really doesn't make a bit of difference unless you've got a feeder on a timer.
  6. 1 buck would certainly kill my gun season as well... or perhaps I become more selective and possibly get no horns at all. In all honesty I try to shoot a 2.5 or older during archery and then i'm strictly trophy hunting for gun. But it gets me out there. Then if all goes according to plan I'll harvest a doe or 2 for meat. It's a self-inflicted OBR with the opportunity to shoot a wall mounter if it presents itself. It usually doesn't. haha.
  7. Consider there's what? Roughly 200k tags sold every year. We know some aren't used, we know some are bought by wives and sisters and we know others who hunt without tags at all. So lets just say out of the 200k I bet it's roughly 10k who are really passionate hunters. Totally pulling that number out of my butt, and you do not need to be a member of this website to show your passion, but statistically with most things in life there are the dedicated passionate 10% and on the flip side there is the bottom 10% full of poachers and sloppy hunters. Just a thought, but I agree that similarly with the safe act. The majority just really dont care... or care enough.
  8. I don't think I've ever once commented on 4 seasons business. It's his business and not mine to worry about. That said, it seams some of you just can't look past it. The guy is also a hunter, and if he's to be believed he hunts some hard access public land. Not every point he makes or every discussion needs to be turned into a debate regarding his business. If there's a specific topic or discussion regarding it then fine. But the rest of you need to leave it alone.
  9. And maybe thats the difference. I've bought 2 houses now based on access and land and not really based on anything else. Of course they checked most of the other boxes of what we wanted, but I could have certainly had a newer nicer house on a postage stamp if the land wasn't so important.
  10. I love the specs and look of that gun. But if you're just looking for a deer gun I'd also suggest you look at a savage or ruger and spend the rest on some great glass. Don't skimp on glass. The average rifle will do just great for NY deer hunting. I don't think you need a high end rifle till you head out west. just my .02.
  11. Buck fever got the best of me 2 years ago and I shot a 5 point. Following that 5 was a nice 8. Shooting a doe or small buck will always put you out of the game. That's why I take my doe with the smoke pole and I still fail to see why it matters if I shoot her with a bow or gun.
  12. Really? Heavy metal in the woods?
  13. You really can't go wrong. PSE makes a good bow. When you get your form down try to get your poundage up past 60. It's better to shoot less poundage and be accurate, but the extra umph can pay off.
  14. Not true. It's even the same version.
  15. Core your ducks are in a row and your priorities are good. Reading and education is good, but nothing beats boots on the ground. What bow did you get? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  16. Certainly never meant anyone to interpret hardcore as putting the sport above family. Strictly looking at it as a hobby you participate in during your free time Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  17. Went from 7 pro 64 to 10 with no issues. All programs and drivers work great and after playing around a bit I like it. It's free and you can revert back easily if you don't like it Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  18. at the root of it in all this mumbo jumbo, he's a shooter!
  19. no. don't skimp on your boots. You don't need a top of the line muck, but a good solid pair can be had for around $100. Also avoid leather. It stinks/smells and absorbs your scent.
  20. 60 to 80 yard bow shots in NY huh?
  21. you're right and at the same time the flip side is tag soup. Most will say, well good then. Fill your freezer with doe. But I have no problem with a 2.5 archery kill. It's no easy task for 90% of hunters. So passing it is a decision that needs to be made based on what a hunter determines to be success. My fear, and it's my pessimistic attitude, is that the 2.5 doesn't get tagged in case mr. big does come along or even without a tag you shoot mr. big and worry about the tag later.
  22. there's very few states that don't have that problem. Come down south where you don't even tag your deer, but we have ARs. You can bait, but not within site of hunter. You can hunt with dogs. It's a mess and nobody enforces anything.
  23. it's also the basis behind the safe act. It's all smoke and mirrors and vote grabbing for the ignorant. Look we did something... regardless if it will really change anything. All the recent shootings in theaters and camera crews. pistols. Not a single one more than 7 rounds. Yet we ignore our nation's mental health issue.
