  1. Down here a couple of years ago some idiot did the same thing with a heavy duty fireworks mortar. He wasn't as lucky.
  2. Be careful where you hunt in the area off Hot Water Street. The ECO's do patrol the area! You must have a permit from the DEC to hunt the state land. You must also have a permit from the county to hunt the county property. The private property is all posted. I hunted there for a few years. Great potential but never many deer. The expressway and 111 seem to keep the numbers down! Good Luck.
  3. Or try this one. http://www.fws.gov/northeast/longislandrefuges/deer_hunt.html
  4. Here ya go. http://www.fws.gov/refuges/profiles/index.cfm?id=52561
  5. I've hunted there twice without much success. It's not as great a hunt as it may seem! I think I'll keep my ten bucks this year.
  6. I've been using Gold Tip XT Hunters for a few years. Their motto,'the toughest arrow you'll ever use' is spot on. I hit a big doe with one but didn't get a pass through because of hitting the far side humorus after a bullseye through the heart! During her fifty yard dash I could hear the exposed shaft hitting the saplings and brush like a kid with a playing card slaping the spokes of a bicycle! After recovering the deer I was sure the arrow was going to be mangled. Upon inspection, the shaft was like new and it only required refletching! It's back in my quiver.
  7. Nice rig Sky. I've been using the Hind Sight for a few years and love it!
  8. When I was younger and on the chase for 'big game', I always seem to have limited my 'trophys' to 100-130 pounders !
  9. I am. I've been a member since I was a Junior member. Had a little blip during my late teens and twenty's when I was chasing other sorts of 'big game' but found my way back.
  10. I had a heart attack when I was 32! I was very healthy 'cept for the smoking, and the doctors blamed it on the ciggs. I really enjoyed smoking and I may be a stubborn SOB but I'm not stupid. No tobacco for the past twenty five years.
  11. Pine is OK as long as it's been seasoned. The people who live up north, (Canada) where there aren't any hardwoods have always used pine and spruce for firewood.
  12. For unprotected species you still must have a hunting license. For regulated game, all seasons and bag limits pertain. An air gun is considered a hunting 'weapon' and you must abide by the discharge distances from neighboring structures just like a bow or other firearm. But cautious discretion and friendly neighbors are always a plus. The air gun has to shoot @ 600 f.p.s. or higher to use it for hunting. With that all said, I hunted with a guy who used an air rifle for squirrel. It wasn't much quieter than my standard velocity .22s. Although, he got one and I didn't. It was five below zero and I had a couple of misfires! Go figure! To each their own. Keep that young one interested in shooting and hunting. We need to keep kids in the woods instead of 'cyber land'. Only four more years 'till he can take the hunters safety course. Good luck.
  13. I've always done the same thing. Why fuss around with the thing in the woods? Half the time it's dark when I get to do the job, by headlamp or holding a flashlight in my teeth! That leaves only the bladder to be careful with. It's a lot easier to cut out what you don't want while the animal is hanging up back home.
  14. The Naushus County DA is pissed that their 'colored' gun law got smacked down by the State Court. So the county set out and entrapped as many dealers as they could. The DA is banking that the county has deeper pockets to out spend any defence the victims can wage. I hope, for the sake of every law abiding gun owner in the country, that the Nashaus DA and her henchmen get spanked again!
  15. Hey, next time you make something that good don't forget to invite ME !!! I just finished throwing together a squirrel stew. I can't wait 'till the crock pot gets done with it's magic.
  16. HEY Karp, I think everyone is preoccupied with the changing season. Right now we're in kind of a limbo. Thinking about getting the boat ready, starting the garden, retrieving tree stands that where left in the frozen woods, turkey hunting, fixing stuff on the house, and a ton of other things. Not to mention getting to the range or letting a few shafts fly!
  17. I gave bowhunting a try once. No one told me about the possible side effects. My second time out I had a doe work her way to within ten yards of me. I thought I was gonna drop dead right there! My heart was trying to burst out of my chest, I kept forgetting to breathe, my legs where shaking and I was so dizzy I almost keeled over! Geeesh! I didn't even remember why I was there in the woods! After that encounter I needed more. I was addicted and the only fix was to go out as often as I could. It's been over thirty years and I still need my seasonal fix. If you give it a try and like Bowhunting , it will change you forever. For the better. This forum has a lot of experienced bowhunters, so ask lots of questions and good luck.
  18. I've been using the Hind Sight for four years with great results. Previously I had trouble lining up my eye with a peep during low light and odd, twisted positions in a stand. The Hind Sight has worked very well for me. It also negates any hand torque that you might unknowingly input. It has proven to be strong and stable even after some falls and spills. There is a small learning curve to sight in but not overly difficult. I'm happy with mine. If you can afford it ,give one a try. Don't put any sight magnifying device on your bow. They're illegal for hunting in N.Y..
  19. Hey Guys, I've only taken a shot at a crow once! I was about 12 and was out hunt'n 'chucks with my dad. We stopped the old car, got out, used a pillow on the hood as a rest, and I took the shot with a 6.5 jap and iron sights at @ 75 yds.. I missed. Ever since then I've wondered what I would do with a crow. I've never heard of any recipes for them. So what do ya do with them?
  20. Rifles of any sort are banned in Westchester, at all times, including rimfire. Whestchester is BOW ONLY for deer. Small game can be taken with bow or shotgun. Anything bigger than 6s will probably cause you some trouble. You'd better be 500 ft. from any structure. It'll be tough to find a place to use a shotgun without sprinkling a McMansion. They closed some DEP properties to shotgun because some commuting office workers freaked out when they saw people going into the woods with GUNS ! OH MY!!!!!!
  21. I hunt State and DEP land down state in Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess. I'm retired so I only go out durring the middle of the week. I hardly ever see any other hunters. Especially during bow season. The deer aren't pressured but that can work both ways. But, I avoid opening gun week 'cause all the knuckleheads are 'out ta shoot sumptin'.
  22. Years ago, during my second year deer hunting I made a rookie mistake. I had a doe tag and shot one that ran off. While tracking it, in the snow, there she was. Just standing there at twenty five yards. So I shot her again. Problem was, the tracks of the first one went one way and this one went in an opposite direction! End result was two dead does but only one tag! Luckily, a hunting acquaintance was happy to tag the second doe. Wasn't quite legal but nothing was wasted and a valuable lesson was learned.
  23. I've got a couple of hang-ons in Putnam. No problems for the past four years but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I also put them in good hunting spots but not obvious places most people will go. I know I'm supposed to take them out of the woods at the end of the season but the bottom climbing sticks or steps are always frozen in where I hide them! I get them out in the afternoons during spring turkey when only the mornings are open for hunting. I also use a climber to move around so as to not wear out the spots with the hang-ons.
