  1. If you want the best tasting venison ,bone out the whole thing. The 'gameyness' of the meat comes from the bone dust while cutting chops or steaks. You can still make steaks from the major muscles after they're off the bone.
  2. Furman, you're right about it not being easy. They know when something out of the ordinary is in their living room! After years of hunting them I've only taken a limit once! If it where easy we wouldn't take the challenge.
  3. I live on L.I. and would be interested. P.M. me. Fitzy
  4. OMG. How much ya gotta drink to think that stuff up?
  5. I use Fahnestock as a refuge when gun season opens. But if you park on Rt.301 you'll be hassled by the park police if you're not back by sunset!
  6. I started out with a Bear Kodiak Magnum compound with the aluminum brackets for the wheels! Right around when the Whitetail Special was popular. It was a gift. I used it for about twenty years and managed to bring home venison now and then! Three years ago I moved up to a bow marketed by Cabela's. The limbs and cams where made by PSE. It shoots OK but one day I'll have that Matthews hot rod.
  7. I've been using Cabela's Lazer Pro Mag 125g. three blades for about fifteen years! I bought nine of them and replacement blades. I've only retired two from rock strikes. I resharpen the blades in my Lansky sharpener so they're scary sharp! They fly good, break bone, stay intact and make huge holes(easy or no tracking)! I'm not sold on the mechanicals just yet.
  8. I started a journal last year. I include the weather and any other conditions. I've made crude maps noting stand sites and terrain. Of course a running story of how the day went is the best thing to jog a memory.
  9. I've hunted the State and DEP land there for quite a few years. I hunt during the week and most times have the properties to myself. When gun season comes along there are a lot of 'hunters' out on the first weekend. After that it slows down. When upstate closes it's a mob scene on the few Westchester properties.
  10. Yup. I use one 'cause one of these days when I take a 'long blink' I might not snap out of it in time to stay in the stand. I put it on as soon as I start up. Ya never know what will happen and it only takes one slip.

    How come?

I got a .54 T/C Renegade. It's a lot like bow hunt'n 'cause of all the dodads and wickets ya need to make it work! Plus the fact that it might not go "BOOOM",keeps the fun in the hunt.
  12. That's a good idea using the glove. In the past I've used black electrical tape. It worked but had to use a mild solvent to get the sticky goo off the muzzle.
  13. Been fletching my own since I started bowhunting in 1979. I've seen people using arrows that had the fletching all tore up and they didn't think it mattered! I'm too anal about my gear to let avoidable variables screw up my shooting. I can screw up just fine without any extra help!
  14. My haul line is twenty four feet long and is attached to a belt loop. When it comes taught the base of the stand is about twenty feet. Being near the same height every time eliminates some of the variables for range estimation.
  15. I use the early squirrel season for scouting. Hunt'n deer but shooting squirrels! With a .22 it's a real challenge 'cause a head shot is the only way to ensure not loosing a cripple. I use a crock pot and make a great stew. It's done when the meat falls of the bone! Had a lot of non-hunters interested and after getting up the courage to try it,all I've ever heard them say is,"Wow,that's good." Making converts one bowl at a time!
  16. A few years ago a trapper friend gave me the carcass of a 25 lb.coon! There was a huge amount of fat on and between the muscles! With most of the fat trimmed away I followed a recipe from L.L.Bean and roasted it. The meat was very rich. Different parts had different flavors just like a pig would! I'd eat it again but I think that next time I'll bone it out like I do deer.
