  1. You bring up an interesting question. The law states to fill in the tag on recovery and u did find it. The question ; what is the time limit? If it was a 150" buck, bet the no answers would be different.

Actually, I wouldn't have made a difference if it were a trophy buck. I don't hunt for antlers and they get thrown out with the rest of the carcass, no matter how big they are. I've yet to find a recipe that makes them edible.

FWIW, I did fill out my last DMP and report it.

  2. My father in law, brother in law, and I were hunting here at my place the third weekend of gun season. About, 4pm, I shot at a doe at 165 yards and she acted hit, so we came into the house to grab some food and give her time to bed down and die.

To make a long story short, we looked until midnight and couldn't find any blood or sign of her, so we gave up and called it a miss.

Today, I was hunting across a stream on my property, about 300 yards from where the doe was standing, and I came across her under some THICK briars. I know, I know, lesson learned. I should have gone out the next day and canvassed some more, but I didn't. Nothing I can do about it now. I feel like crap, so please don't pile on. I do have a serious question. Should I fill out a tag and report the kill so she can be added to the final take numbers or not worry about it?

    Thanks.

  3. You choose to hunt in the woods. I chose to hunt a field today. No different than if you were hunting a plowed under hay field and I was hunting over soybeans. Why should I be put at a disadvantage because of your choice?

  4. I went out this morning here at my place and didn't see a thing. Went up to my mother-in-law's place around 11 and didn't see anything. Just finishing up lunch now and getting ready to get back on my stand here til sunset. With three tags left, it looks like I'll be able to make a pretty good deer-tag stew come Wednesday

  5. Accuweather.com lists my sunrise this morning at 7:29. The chart in the regs says I have to wait til 7:31am. Either way, it was light WAY earlier that that this morning. I could clearly see deer grazing in my neighbors bean fields over 500 yards away at 6:50am from my stand. Would I have gotten in trouble for shooting a deer at 7:30 or 7:25? I'll abide by this law as long as it's in effect, but that doesn't mean it's not a stupid law that needs to be changed.

  6. To Hell with "sunrise to sunset" or "1/2 hr before sunrise to 1/2 hr after sunset". They're too vague as "sunrise" & "sunset" are subjective. What's wrong with "it's illegal to take game with the aid of artificial light"?

If it's too dark in the woods, don't take the shot. At the very same moment, the moon may be shining bright and make it perfectly safe to take a shot in an open field.

  7. He was on his property and shot a deer on his land. Deer I was on jumped and ran.

DEC wasn't far away and was here in ten minutes. Not much investigating to be done when he don't have a license or a ML.

  8. DEC just left with the deer on a rack, the guys shotgun in a case and my neighbor in the back seat. No hunting license and doesn't even own a ML.

Deer was hit three times in the guts. Glad I didn't have to dress it out.

  9. He was on his property. It just sucks bc if he hadn't been cheating, my deer would be in my truck headed to the processor. If he hadn't fired a second shot so quick id have had a chance to reset and get a shot off.

Just got off phone with DEC. They're on the way

  10. Just had a wonderful afternoon in the woods ruined by my cheating neighbor. I got out of work at noon and rushed home, changed, loaded the Wildcat and headed into the woods. I brushed myself in on the side of the hill overlooking a well-used deer trail and hoped I'd see something before I have to go pick my daughter up from daycare by four. In walks this big-bodied six-point buck and I level up on him. I should have shot him at the first chance I had, but I wanted to wait for him to get within 40 yards because I'd have to thread the shot between trees and I didn't have a great rest. When he gets to 50 yards, I take the safety off and *BOOM*, *BOOM*, BOOM BOOM BOOM comes from the field behind me that belongs to the neighbor. Then I hear "Yeah! I think you got him, Let's go track him!"

Why do people feel the need to cheat? It's damn muzzleloader season, put your shotgun away! Hell, if you're gonna use it, at least fire only one shot at a time so you don't make it obvious to everyone in the valley that you're cheating.

    *rant over*

  11. I've got my reg season, 1 DMP, and ML tags left. Went out this afternoon and saw two does but didn't get a shot on them bc they were moving on a side hill in some thick cover. I'd go sit and wait for them to come back, but I gotta pick the baby up from daycare soon. Who knew babies would interfere with hunting season? Blasphemy, I tell ya!

  12. I've never fired at a deer with my muzzle stuffer, but judging from my targets and recovered rounds fired into a block of maple at 200 yds, I wouldn't have any reservations about putting crosshairs on a deer at that range.

  13. As long as I leave mine in the cold, no problem. I do unload-reload weekly, just to make sure. I'm having trouble with yearly storage. Barrel always rusty, and I don't use soapy water to clean. I've used every oil to no avail, still a rusty barrel.

Sounds like you clean it after hunting season and don't get it back out til next year. Take it out every couple months and poke some holes in something. It keeps you in practice (shooting and reloading for a follow up shot) and forces you to do maintenance on your weapons.

  14. Friend loves in 7H, and would love to hunt that area one of these days. He says they are rampant around his neck of the woods.

I live literally on the border on 7h/7j. I've got one this year so far, but a buddy of mine got 4 on opening day in 7h.

  15. I always have at least two muzzleloaders in my shack. Mine and my wife's, and most of the time my brother-in-law's. Do I feel confident enough to reload mine? Yes, and I do if I'm not hunting from my shack. Would I waste the time reloading and not just grab one of the other loaded and ready ones on the rack? No.
