Having Used all weapons in this thread. I'd have to say the Crossbow has the least chance of follow up shots. As far as distance, I hunt Like I have a Recurve no matter what I'm using. The closer in they are the better. As long as none powder burning weapons are used at the same time no problem here. Enjoy the Hunt, Practice hard no matter what your shooting.

I killed many a deer 10/24-10/31, if the Rut fell right the were done by Gun. I also seen years like this where it fell the end of Bow beginning of Gun in the Southern Zone. The Dates set by DEC don't ensure the Rut, Nature does.
-
The Rut can happen anytime. Like this year it maybe right during SZ gun, now we could still Bow hunt if we want.

I use to set my life around hunting with a recurve ,even during shogun season. I use to make my own wood shafts/fletch & mount Zwickey broad heads. I enjoyed the challenge. Bow hunting in Oct is where the season should be, never liked the late season. When the Compound craze set in, I thought the same way some are viewing the crossbow hunters. Now years later there are a lot of deer being ethically killed by Compounds. I think of it like this what's a Challenge to one is not to another, and you will see in years to come the crossbow will be right there, Now the State did not make a Special season for compound's and they should not for the Crossbow. The State needs to call a spade a spade, its a Bow not a firearm. I've Taken Deer with a Long Bow, Recurve, Compound, Shotgun and Rifle, all Challenging enjoyable hunts, at different distance's. I will be taking one with a Crossbow in the future. I view it as a different hunt using a Different Tool to get the job done. People say deer are going to get wounded, Man I've see wounded Deer in every season. There are always going to be poor shots no matter what you put in there hands.

I'll be out this weekend, but I think Tuesday will be a great day.

No just wanted to show you how, BS like this adds nothing to a thread other than Kill it. Its becoming to common around here lately. People come on a thread to pick it apart or start trouble, its something we could do without.

The reason for the caps: Member thought I said Farmers where the problem. So I edited the post to bold Caps. So why come onto a Thread to point something like Caps or Edited, You grading? Or do you have a problem. If you have nothing positive to add, don't add. HEY I MODIFIED THIS IN CAPS TO GIVE YOU SOMETHING TO DO.

No one is encouraging anything, other than answering his question. You know sometimes when hunting heavy forest it looks a lot darker than along a field. Now the OP said 6:15 now we don't know if he checked his watch after the buck fever was over. You know I think he knows he screwed up, so giving advice is the best thing we could do at this point. If you make him out to be a bad hunter how does that help? Its easy to sit back and scold him, but easier to help him. How many people have little questions they want ask but the born experts will beat up on them. He was honest with what he wrote and asked for HELP. How many new hunters have your comments stopped from visiting or asking a question here? I hope he finds this deer and lives and learns and don't think he has it all knowed up.

1st off a member asked for advice and he's call out. Hey the member stated facts as he was the one there, he doesn't need the keyboard army on him. Answers to your question is yes he will die. go out 1st thing today and look for hair where the impact was the lighter the hair the lower you hit him. Some times even with best of shots deer run a bit. Start at the spot you shot him draw a straight line where you seen LAST seen him. 2 things to look for along the way Blood or matter when he jumps small logs and ditches. With this type of shot he may or may not give a good trail to follow. Look at belly hight for sign on brush or trees. Follow the trail out 100-300 yds look for beds with dark blood spot, make some circles within the area. if you walk up on him and he is in a bed his eyes will be open if dead, closed if in shock. Watch for Crows, you can find him. Everyone makes errors and your not the 1st to make it, don't be fooled by talk. Let us know and good luck

Its Not The Farmer Fault Its The Local Famers And Fellow hunters that are planting and Growing Food and Habitat. By spending Millions on Seed and Planting land that other wise would not hold Deer. Its the States FAULT they do Very little to improve Habitat for small & big game In NY
-
This Messed up deer population is the fault NYS not knowing how to manage a deer heard. Did you ever read a NYS DEC wildlife survey, From Small game to big game its piss poor. When was the last time the State worked on Habitat in all counties. Thanks to your local farmer or fellow hunter's for doing what little is being done for improving Habitat.

I don,t think the Amish in NY observe DST.
