Well one thing for sure, I will be out there Sat morn with my 20 yr old Excal, the weather looks promising. I haven't been seeing the large flocks of fall turkeys that I usually see this time of year, a little disappointing here in this part of the valley. I really think last winter put a serious hurting on them. -
I've gotten to know some of my bordering property owners and it works out well, we position our stands after letting each other know where and we even walk each others properties together so we know where everyone is. It works out well. Funny when the leaves come down and you look over your shoulder and realize someone has been bowhunting a couple hundred feet from you and you realize that wasn't deer you heard moving in the dark every morning, lol.

I tell you between doe only here, antler restrictions there and trying to read this stuff on this damn phone I don't even know what the hell I'm doing anymore. I'm pretty sure if I see a game warden in the woods I will be going down for doing something wrong. -

Wow I'm glad I put this post up, I just checked and sure enough it is the 7th, I have 2 other hunting buddies who think it's starting tomorrow too. Guess I'll be using the old Bowtech vert for another week. Thanks for the heads up. -
My wife found some nice oysters yesterday, ate them last night,,fantastic. It's been a great year for parasols, we have been eating them all summer and picking them right outside the door.

Why do so many hunters feel they need to give long explanations for why they're switching to a crossbow. I'm in excellent shape and hunt with a crossbow because I like to.
-
I used to use a red dot but prefer a low power crosshair scope, just works better for me, no batteries no switch.
-
but what is that extra speed really going to do for you. Does it really give any advantage on jumpy deer at say 35yds? Because the deer I've taken at my 25yd max never had a chance, but I had a clean miss on a string jumper once at 35 yds, just wondering. Excals are easy and I just love the accuracy.
-
Hate to say it but that's why I shoot Excals, none of that blowing up stuff.

Lots of good deals on craigslist. People are always upgrading.

Guns are an emotional subject. People want to be free to go about their daily business without worrying about some nut murdering their family while in a movie theater or diner. People also want to be able to own Firearms to protect their families from these same nuts and yes there's that small fringe element that think they need to protect themselves from the government. Problems lie in the screening process of who can and can't purchase a gun. Unfortunately the NRAs hard stance against improved screening is getting people pissed and going to make it tougher on law abiding sane gunowners and sportsman. People keep bringing up Chicago and the total failure of gun regs that's taken place there, but I hate to say it cities like Chicago have become a lost cause and shouldn't even be in the equation for the rest of the country.
-
We better screening to keep guns out of the hands of nutz.

First off welcome back, NY is a great state. Great hunting opportunity's, beautiful country, prime real estate, excellent dining and great people. Yup the gun laws are extreme but don't really effect hunters despite what alot of people would want you to believe. As far as your firearm choices are concerned your spot on and ready to go. I'm considering a .243 myself. If you ever decide to take on black bear than yea a nice 3006 bolt action would certainly be the way to go. Not sure if your interested but NY has some great bow hunting opportunity's and you can now hunt with a crossbow. Oh your far from the first that I heard coming back, many do and many others are sorry they left. I'm a NYer for life.

Ill be joining the X Bow crowd this year

a mediocre Excalibur, really? String broke after 8 shots? -
It's even more evident here in upstate NY where you have towns like Newburgh and Poughkeepsie where hunting and fishing opportunity's are minutes away and you have those residents who just seem to miss out on it all. A previous poster mentioned the money barrier but back in the day the majority of NYC hunters I knew were anything but rich and even poor but managed to trek upstate NY the 10s of thousands to hunt and enjoy the outdoors. I think alot of minorities shun the sport due to social barriers "some imagined some real" about this being a white man's game. On the rare occasion when I see a black guy shopping bows in Gander Mountain I almost feel like going over and helping the guy.

There are politicians (mostly Republican) that want to privatize it and hand it to Wall St to play with. These same Cons want to voucherize Medicare and basically give you a coupon once a year that would cover you to a minimal amount after which you give your house up to cover your medical costs. These same politicians have been looking to gut SS and Medicare for decades. Sorry I know this is going to ruffle alot feathers here but this what I'm seeing.

I would've let off a round and broke it up, like someone else mentioned not in my backyard.

I have no real issues with NYs hunting laws and have the right to finally hunt with a crossbow, which I think is great.Yes I have problems with the safe act but have come to realize that the need for owning 30 round mags and AR style rifles(which you still can own) aren't really a life changer for me. I still own all the rifles I need to hunt, I have plenty of ammo, and feel very safe in my home with a Mossberg 500 in my room. Im not worried in the least that Cuomos coming for my deer and turkey guns and the idea that we need military style weapons to go up against our government or defend myself from ISIS coming into my town is something that I have outgrown. Get out hunt, fish, and enjoy what this state has to offer. If you really need to own AR/AK rifles with bayonets, flash hiders, and drum mags this is not the state you can do it in. -
For those that are talking about it heating up later, there's little chance of that, turkey mating and tom calling are best the very first week of the season and in actuality NYs season starts on the tail end of the turkey rut. I've put away my turkey gun and will be pulling my blinds in soon. Terrible season.
