  1. been there done that.. fortunately I have one hunting partner I've been hunting with for 25+ years, but others have come and gone...There was one guy i hunted with for 10 years, then we went on an out of state hunt in Colorado, returned, dropped him off at his house and haven't spoken too him since and that was in 1999...everything in life changes...sometimes it's others, sometimes it ourselves
  2. Yesterday - I watched a mink chase a chipmunk within 2 feet of me. It then proceded to chase it right at me - i had to jump up and they went within a foot of my left leg ! The chipmunk escaped into a hole. Here's the best part - the mink then turned looked at me and charged me ! it must have been ticked off that it lost it's meal - it stoped about 2 feet from me and stared me down for a good 60 seconds

best post I've read on here in a long time - couldn't agree more
  4. I hunt in 7M and 7F and I see way to many of them - shot one last year (7F) - had one sneak up on me last week (7M) - tried to shoot it with the bow, but I moved too soon and it made me - was kind of funny to watch - it didn't know what i was and kept jumping up and down like a dog trying to get me to move again, then it slowly walked backed off and ran from where it came from...
  5. statewide AR would get me to retire from hunting - I've never eaten a set of antlers that i liked...
  6. congrats - you'll never forget this day - it's been some 25+ years since the 1st buck i killed with a bow but I remember it like it was yesterday...
  7. have always done it myself - the guys i hunt with we do it together - take our time and trim it real good - wrap it well and we always know what we have - plus it's more time to tell stories, etc
  8. one pointer i can give you is - bring your rain gear - when it rains there it rains nasty
  9. Enjoy your trip to NewFoundland - i've been there twice moose hunting. Shot a moose both times with my .270 using 150 grain federal round...beautifull place Here's where i went http://www.newfoundlandbiggamehunting.com/gallery.htm
  10. landwaz - i agree...that's why i will use both. i love shooting my .270 - very accurate. Last shot out of it killed a moose at 100 yards - should be enough for a whitetail
  11. I hunt in cortland county - will probably stick to shotgun most of the time, just due to not having long shots where i hunt, but when possible will use my Savage .270
  12. metal ladder stands - for me I'm not crazy about heights and i feel the best in a ladder stand. the platforms have enough room for me to turn and with a seat pad i can get comfortable and sit for long periods of time
  13. the 1st time i tried a small food plot (1/2 acre) - i didn't spray and the weeds took over 50% of the plot. subsequently i have sprayed and the weeds aren't a problem
  14. "The concept of deer management has been proven to work in other states as it will and has in this state." Define work - does that mean my hunting privelage will be diminished ? - can I pay less if the definition of "work" means less oportunity for someone that has to work for a paycheck 5-6 days a week and gets limited time in the field.... it's amazing how people complain about government regulations annd yet here people are proposing more.... don't tread on me
  15. hmm ..never herad of gun owners of america...i'll have to chek them out
  16. i've been a member for 20+ years they may be a little extreme these days but they are the only organization at the national level fighting for the 2nd amendment
  17. I enjoy seeing large racks, but in the end that isn't why I go hunting. I get just as much enjoyment from goose/duck/turkey/coyote hunting and they don't have a "rack"... if people want large racks go to where the habitat supports it...the midwest
  18. I'm thinking of doing a couple of small turnip food plots (1 acre or less for each) for a late fall crop...from what i've read it says to plant end of July/early august. Has anyone done this for a fall crop ? Success ? Thanks in advance
  19. in today's world it's all about presentation - would you want this posted as an advertisement for hunting ?
  20. fishing was my 1st introduction to the great outdoors - had an uncle that took me out on lake ontario on weekends- some of my best childhood memories - I still fish, ponds & lakes - not a lot - but still enjoy it
  21. i have a nikon - never had a problem with it works great
  22. I agree - i stopped even loging on for awhile since i got tired of reading the same debate over and over again and i use the term debate loosely...
  23. i like sweet old bills idea - i've bought a couple of "duds" in my time
  24. thanks culver - that link is great - i need all the help i can get. I investigated some more and i think it was muskrat the burroughed into the dam - next seasaon i'll have to do some trapping
