  1. If I could only have one scope it would be a fixed 4X Leupold....Actually I have two of them, both bought at gun shows for about $125 IIRC...I have used them all over the continent for whitetails, mulies, pronghorns, moose, caribou and hogs, On rifles as heavy as .338 Win mag and 9.3 x62 mauser, at ranges from point blank to 400 yards, with absolutely no complaints or problems.... Actually, my present main whitetail rifle wears a Burris 2 x7, which is the only variable I have on any of my rifles...Ther is a story behind it.. About 40 years ago, Ron Shirks had Rem M700 Mountain rifles for sale, and if you bought a scope with it, you got free rings, bases, and mounting...I wanted a Mountain Rifle in 7-08 and I told them I wanted a Leupold fixed 4X on it... They didn't have the Leupold in stock, so I went with the Burris as second choice.. I admit the Burris has been a good scope, though...
  2. I just hide behind a tree and make a noise like a carrot.......
  3. I must be worth a fortune....
  4. Glad to know there is some available;;; However at the rate am expending it I probably have a lifetime supply... I have expended six rounds in the last two years..One round each year to confirm my zero and one round apiece for four deer...
  5. It was 5 degrees according to my truck thermometer on my way home from the Legion This afternoon...I had to hit the brakes to avoid three penguins and a polar bear...
  6. Looks like Saturday night down here in Dogpatch in the early/mid 1960s.....Except for the rabbits.....Hehehehe...
  7. Why am I not surprised that Christmas is your birthday..??..Hehehehehe.... Good luck to you, and I hope you get another button buck liver plus a set of nuts... As por moi, after processing two deer this year, I quit...Never even loaded the smokepole...
  8. You beat me to it, Mike !!....Getting slow in my old age....
  9. When I got my job in 1974 with Corning Glass Works as a weekly lab technician, I was making $130 a week....
  10. I have a T/C Hawken that my ex-wife bought me for my birthday in 1973...It was always dependable with black powder and Pyrodex, but while gearing up for an elk hunt in 2004, I switched to 777 because that's what my partners were using ... After that hunt, I began to have ignition problems, so I bought what is probably the same 209 nipple conversion that Al has.. 100% reliable ignition now, but as Al says, it is slow to reload and also offers the possibility of losing it in the leaves or snow, rendering the rifle useless, unlss you want to use it as a club, as Jerimiah Johnson did at times..
  11. It's dated 1972....At that time I was halfway through a 2 year active duty assignment on the USS Moale, DD-693.....
  12. I remember them,,,,,,I also remember some earlier ones I belive I paid $49.95 for my Ruger 10/22 in 1969... ai Nichol's Discount City ....
  13. In the summer of 1966, I killed 75 woodchucks, most of them with my Win M69A .22 rimfire...The hayfields and cow pastures were full of them....It has been years since I've seen chuck holes in a hayfield..The few remaning live in road ditches and under people's garages
  14. One opening morning about 30 years ago I decided to count all of the shots that I heard...By 9:00 AM I was up to 125 shots and quit counting...Of course that was back in the shotgun/driving days and often you heard 3-5 shot volleys...Now with rifles and few people driving deer I might hear 15-20 shots on opening day, nearly all singles..
  15. I made the mistake of sampling it....Excellent !! Much better than my old product..It won't last long now... Every time I go past the fridge I have to grab a slice...
  16. I just put up a container with my buck and my buddy;s button buck hearts using Wolc's Grandma's recipe...I am going to be a GOOD dooby and let it marinate a few days before sampling it...Sure does smell good, though....Hehehe....
  17. All of my rifles and repeating shotguns have sling swivels, or on most of them, studs for detachable slings.. My only guns without slings are my side/sides and O/U.... And YES I have missed a few shot opportunities over the years on deer and turkeys because my gun was slung over my shoulder.. Oh well......
  18. I am going to alter my recipe somewhat...I have always used a very simple recipe. Simmer the heart with a bayl leaf until done... Allow it to cool in it's own broth... Slice the heart..Layer it in a nonmetal container, layer of heart, salt&pepper, layer of sliced onions, etc. Cover with a brine 50/50 water and cider vinegar....Keep in fridge.. I do like tthe idea of the cider/sugar mix and the pickling spices....
  19. Depends on whether the does are straight or LGBT?.....
  20. I saw 28 deer opening day from my tower stand, and not one of them had an antler...Second day I saw one deer, a buck, but he was tiny...I doubt he would dress out 75 pounds, so I let him walk...Yesterday I saw 12, but again no bucks... I have two DMPs, but I prefer to hold off on shooting does this early in the season...All in all, I am having fun seeing lots of deer.. Sooner or later a decent buck will show up.. I am not a trophy hunter by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd like to shoot something with a little MEAT on it, unlike that little skipper I passed up Sunday..
  21. You and I live less than 20 miles apart and I have seen perhaps 12-15 in the wild, including the one I trapped a few years back....At 72 I have 20 years on you, but most of the cats ( if not all) that I have seen have been within the last 20 years... I nearly ran over a big one that ran across Rt 15 right near the Addison exit about 1:00 pm one afternoon..I had to climb on the brakes hard to avoid hitting him...
