  1. Over the last 50 years, nearly all of my upland hunting ( grouse, woodcock, pheasants, rabbits) has been done with double barrel guns....Side x sides in 20, 28, and .410 and a Browning o/u.....Also killed a bunch of ducks with the 20 sxs back in the lead shot days and I still use my Citori 12 gauge for ducks and geese with steel shot at times... For most of my waterfowl hunting nowadays, and nearly all of my turkey hunting, I use gas semi autos......
  2. When I was growing up there was an old timer who lived next door ( half a mile away) who had a .410.. He referred to it as a " four hundred and ten gauge", and no. he wasn't kidding...
  3. One thing I have noticed in these pictures is that among the lever action rifles, the overwhelming majority have long ( 24" +) barrels , rather than shorter carbine length barrels that are popular today... Probably a throwback to black powder days, when a longer barrel was necessary to completely burn the powder charge..
  4. Hoping for the best, Cynthia....
  5. I agree....I didn't have it growing up, and never did either of my wives....In fact I STILL don't have it....
  6. A river otter is one animal that I have never seen, in all of my travels hunting and fishing on the North American continent...I have seen fresh tracks on local trout streams, and one day while trout fishing my partner, who was a couple of hundred yards upstream of me, had one swim right past him...I have seen fishers, martens, wolverines, and wolves in the wild, but never an otter..
  7. I had that mount on a 20 gauge 1100 skeet gun...Worked very well, but if you take the barrel on and off for cleaning, etc, you should check the zero before you take it huntin'
  8. I suspect that may be urban legend, Rob....The Duke died in 1979 and the LD series wasn't filmed un til the 1990's...
  9. I was pronghorn hunting in Douglas WY when Open Range was playing on the local theater...My buddies and I had tagged out and decided to go to the movies....It was Tuesday night, but the local theater was packed with locals...What a hoot, sitting in the theater with all those locals, who were hooting and hollering and loving the movie that was filmed in their back yard...
  10. Captain Augustus McRea.... " A man who won't cheat for a poke don't WANT one bad enough.."
  11. Captain Woodrow call was TC III's great grandfather..... " I hate rudeness in a man.....Won't TOLERATE it ...""
  12. Unfortunately, sometimes I don't have a choice !...
  13. SWEET...Dirty Harry, eat your heart out !!
  14. Get used to it, Grampy...It doesn't get any better...<<sigh>>....
  15. Dan. my experience is not as broad as yours, but I will agree that of the cervids I have tried, whitetail is at the bottom of the list....Caribou, taken before the rut is succullent...Moose and elk are very good.. My experience with mule deer is limited, but a buddy and I took two adult mulie bucks in an early season ( velvet) above treeline hunt and they were excellent..Better than any whitetail I ever had.... YMMV....Never ate caribou during the rut but I have heard that it is so rank that even dogs won't eat it....All my caribou have been fat pre-rut animals killed in late August or early-mid September....I have also heard that mule deer get pretty strong during the rut...
  16. From your photos your gun is definitely a higher grade than the field grade Trojan.... Lots of info out there on quality American made doubles...Often information is stamped on the water table... Beautiful shotgun...
  17. Nice shotgun..Is it a Trojan grade ? That was Parker's standard field grade gun....Mechanically as good as any, but less engraving, checkering, etc. than the higher grades..
  18. The only drawback is that when they have to stand " Nuts to Butts" she'll always have to be at the head of the line...
  19. VERY nice Shiras bull.......Congrats..
  20. The scene where Captain Brittles receives his gold watch from his men chokes me up every time....
  21. The Duke.....I dearly love them both, but I cry every time I watch " She Wore a Yellow Ribbon", and Clint has never made me cry...
  22. For hares I have always used my 20 side/side with 25" bbls choked IC and mod with an ounce of #6's.... If I were using a single barrel gun, it would be choked IC.....Most shots are close and hares are not hard to kill....
