  1. There is no limit to the number of firearms that you may carry, as long as they all are legal implements for the season that is open. So, if you want to, during REGULAR deer season, you can carry a compound bow, a crossbow, a shotgun , a muzzleloader, and a pistol or multiples of the aforementioned implements. Back before rifles were legalized here, a buddy of mine used to hunt out of a treestand with a shotgun/slugs and his scoped Encore 7mm08 pistol. If a deer went running past 30 yards away, he'd use the shotgun. If one stepped out 200 yards away, he'd use the pistol. I hunted out of a watch a few years back with my XP-100 pistol in .260 Rem. It happened to be on a flight path for geese coming off a nearby swamp. I started taking my Browning O/U with me loaded with shot. While watching the adjoining fields for deer, I had some fun shooting geese that were coming over the hedgerow where I was standing, at treetop level. It was perfectly legal, as long as I did not try to shoot a deer with the shotgun and shot loads (fat chance) OR attempt to shoot the geese with the pistol ( EQUALLY fat chance)...
  2. Growie...I have noticed that I get dehydrated MUCH faster in my later years... I thought it was just another "benefit" of old age, but I am on some BP meds and probably they are a factor. I drink lots of water, and I still have trouble with dehydration. I have never passed out, but I certainly have felt the effects of dehydration several times, fatique, nausea, etc...
  3. I have no problem with people legally carrying while hunting..When I hunted in NM with my bow for elk it was legal to carry and I did, because lions and tigers and bears OH MY, do exist there.. However, around home, if I am carrying a rifle, shotgun, or ML, I don't need the extra weight..If I have to finish a critter I can do it with the long gun, in the head or at the base of the neck, or in the lungs if it is a mounter and I do not want to ruin a cape..
  4. Ain't no flies on the .270... Hard to beat it for deer sized game.. Good caliber, good rifle, quality optics..
  5. Yeah..jetflap is peterbeater's evil twin... And religiouscop is thier boy wonder ..!!..

    Spike report

Jetflap and peterbeater... You mention a lynch mob ? Well, what do you expect when you come strutting onto the forum with your chest all puffed out and your superior and condesending attutude and start insulting resident posters because you don't share the same priorities concerning deer hunting... Why don't you crawl back under the bridge where you came from and perhaps come back after your testicles have descended and you can keep a civil tongue in your little pin head..?.. Sorry if I used too many big words.
  7. Yeah..Big a$$ bear..Would have looked good in ANYBODY's trophy room... Maybe whoever hit him will have him mounted.. I am assuming that the DEC or the Troopers issue possesion permits for roadkilled bears as they do deer. Anybody know anything about that ?
  8. Filleted 11 nice perch and one unfortunate 3 pound smallmouth that went in the cooler because he had the hook in his gullet and probably would not have survived.. Fortunately, I like smallmouth filets ALMOST as much as I like perch filets..
  9. I was on my way over to Keuka Lake fishing this this morning, and just north of Ira Davenport Hospital on route 54 north of Bath, there were several vehicles on the side of the road.. As I drove past, I saw a BIG black bear dead on the shoulder of the highway..His head looked HUGE..Big bear...
  10. One round you might consider..Although I doubt the Encore offers it.. The 9.3 x 62... It is a legendary chambering in Africa..Kind of a poor man's .375 H&H.. Works great on all plains game out to 300 yards or so. It also is considered adequate for cape buffalo with 286 or 320 grain bullets...Recoil is simialr to a 30-06 with heavy bullets..There is a reasonable variety of factory loads available, and reloading components are readily available...I bought one a few years ago to replace my .338 Win mag, which kicked the snot out of me...It has worked great on the few animals I shot with it, a bull moose, a couple of caribou, a couple of whitetails and a coyote..And it beats me up much less than that old .338 Win Mag Ruger 77 used to.. It is also one of my most accurate rifles. With Barnes X 250 grainers it prints 1/2" groups at 100 yards..
  11. For varmints and maybe occasional use on deer, I'd go with the .223... Light recoil, effective, and lots of cheap ammo available. No problem with the .243, but ammo is more expensive...Anything bigger, 7MM08, .308, .270 etc . is REDUNDANT with your 30-06...
  12. It is an excellent medium caliber round, quite similar in performance to the .35 Whelen. With 200, 225 or 250 grain bullets it is capable of taking medium to heavy game animals out to 300 yards. It is best as handloader's cartridge..Not a big selection of factory loads out there.
  13. Deer heart, sliced thin with a little bit of mayo and some salt and coarse ground black pepper on a crusty white bread....YUM !!... I also love the liver, dusted in flour, salt+pepper and fried in bacon with lots of onions... Of all the liver I have eaten, deer liver is by far the best..Always very tender and mild... Deer GIBLETS...That's LIVIN' LARGE...hehehehe..
  14. Good score, Growie.. That oughta put you on HIGH BEAM...<<wink>>..
  15. Congrats on your mulie, Pistol...Pictures ?.... Jackson Hole is beautiful country. Did you get into town ? The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar is pretty cool..
  16. Nice report, 16 gauge.. I always considered myself more of a bird hunter than a deer hunter, but I don't have the legs for it anymore, and I no longer have the property to keep dogs.. I still remember opening day of grouse season in 1965 in the southern zone.. A friend of mine and I covered miles that day ( no dogs).. I killed my first limit of 4 grouse with 6 shots, and killed a woodcock that took me 3 shots. I was shooting a 16 gauge Remington 11-48, my first repeating shotgun. As I remember it, my buddy and I walked pretty much non-stop from dawn untl about 4:00 PM.. I have only shot a 4 bird limit of grouse a couple of times since then....
  17. HMMMM..Butter me up enough to squeeze into a little vest..??.. My oh MY, you are a sweet talker, Doe.. Do I even need to bring my SHOTGUN..??...
  18. The bedroom is one room you should avoid..There are NO positive factors involved in hunting there... Setting up between the bedroom and the feeding area would work, as might setting up in the feeding area.. Avoid the bedroom..
  19. No..I just can't say it... Bless your heart, Growie, for sharing this with us....
  20. Doe and I had a conversation via PM, and he wondered if I could pass for a youth..Well, I'm short enough for sure, and I could shave real close to get rid of my white whiskers and use a little "Just For Men" to touch up my gray sidewalls,, and keep my hat on to camoflage my bald spot, but I am a little worried that my "turkey neck" might give me away...<<sigh>>.. I LOVE shootin' pheasants, too....
  21. How much did the supressor muffle the blast ? What would you compare it to ? I realize that it is not like on TV or the movies, where surpressed centerfires sound like a daisy BB gun.. <<grin>>....
  22. Grizz...I see that the outfitter's rifle that your lovely bride used is fitted with a supressor. Very interesting ! What caliber was it chambered for ? Let me guess..Was it a .308 ?....
  23. The lifetime sportsman will be my Christmas present to my grandson, who is 7 months old.
  24. Congrats on your marriage, Grizz....Also please pass on my congrats to your lovely bride.. Awesome pictures...I am green with envy. You had a super hunt..Thanks for sharing.. I'd love to do an African hunt, but due to limited fixed income, it's never gonna happen, unless I hit the lottery..<<grin>>..
  25. Actually, varget is in the same general burn rate range ( medium) as other powders that do well in the .35 Rem case, such as 4895, 4320 and 3031, so I'm not surprised at the accuracy. RL 15 would also be a good powder to try. It works great in my 7mm08. RL-19 and 4350 ( medium slow burners) might be accurate enough, but your velocity would suffer. They are better candidates for larger standard cases, such as .270 Win, .280Rem or 30-06.
