  1. Hehehehehe...My daughter is happily married and recently provided me with my first grandson. However she has a former boyfreind whom she claims is STILL worried I might kill him.. Heck, I never THREATENED the kid..It's just when he came to the house I made it a point to be field stripping my .45 or sharpening a large knife and SMILING.... ...

    TICS!

Hmmmmm.. I have spent most of my life outdoors and had exactly ONE tick inbedded in me, which happened after handling a fox pelt.. I have removed a fair number from dogs and cats over the years, mostly large wood ticks. Perhaps I have just been lucky.. I have also hunted spring gobblers in Georgia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Maine and Ontario and never picked up a tick.. Maybe I just don't taste good...
  3. I shouldn't even dignify this thread with a response, but since I am a weak person, I just have to comment.. Sounds to me like Ol' Fishin Magician is a couple fries short of a happy meal.. ...
  4. DANG...!!.. I'm SALIVATING...
  5. I suspect that a corned beef brisket would turn out dry and tough if grilled.. Some meats, especially relatively tough cuts that have been cured, are best cooked under MOIST cooking conditions. I think corned beef is one of them. Never tried grilling one..Just my opinion.. I have had corned beef that was ROASTED ( less liquid than simmered or braised) and in my opinion it was far inferior to the more moist cooking methods.
  6. A good friend of mine is a retired State Trooper and parole officer. He calls them "slugs"...
  7. I heard several gobblers about a month ago while I was hunting hogs in Georgia.

    Decoys?

While the great majority of the turkeys I have killed have been when I was just sitting against a tree in the woods, I have been employing a decoy and popup blind more over the last few years. I generally set up along the edge of a field, and place the decoy where it can be seen for a distance. I've had mixed results with jake and gobbler decoys.Sometimes they work, sometimes they spook birds. Same goes for alert hen decoys. My most effective decoys have been feeding hens, especially the bobble head hen. A slight breeze is enough to give the decoy a little movement, which adds to realism of the setup. When I'm sure the gobbler can see the decoy, I quit calling and let the decoy do it's work... I feel that overcalling when a gobbler is within say, 100 yards is counterproductive. It can cause a bird to hang up. I have watched gobblers stand 100 yards from a decoy and gobble and strut for nearly an hour, before finally commiting and coming into shotgun range.
  9. Yeah, Culver...They work well in a drill press.. Unfortunately, when I got divorced 5 years ago, my drill press went BYE-BYE.. Along with a lot of my other toys... Oh well....Compost occurs...<<grin>>..
  10. I agree with Lawdwaz... Perhaps the poster was speaking "tongue in cheek"...
  11. I have some Lee Dies and I never had had an issue with them. I also have Lee case trimmers and they work fine. I admit that if I had a higher volume of cases to trim, other trimmers (Read more expensive) might be better, for for the limited amount of trimming that I do, the Lee product works fine.
  12. Congrats to the pretty lady, Skillet... Glad you had a good hunt... And KUDOS to you for not rising to Biz R O Dude's bait... I'm beginning to think that this might not be your first day off the turnip truck....<<grin>>...
  13. 10-4...My buddy was hunting Idaho... Looks like you had a nice hunt anyway..Hey, that's huntin"...
  14. Nice pictures, Biz-R -O....Thanks for sharing..Looks like a nice place.. Tough luck on the lack of snow..Those kittcat hunts are incrementally tougher without snow. I have a buddy who has been on two, both with reputable outfitters, and he came up blank both times..No snow..
  15. Tough luck on losing the piggie..They are some pretty resiliant critters..But Hey..That's hunting.. How was the trip than that.?.Accomodations, chow, etc ? What part of South Carolina is it in ?...Would you do the hunt again or reccomend it to others ?
  16. I did a little research and learned that some M94 Big Bores in .375 were made top eject, and some were made angle eject. The AE models tend to bring more money. As far as I can learn, all of the .307 and .356 models were AE. Back in the early 80s I hunted a couple of times in PA with a fellow who used a M94 .375. I can't remember if he had a scope on it or whether it was top eject or AE..
  17. I believe the M94 big bores were made on the AE (angle eject) side ejection platform, so scopes could be mounted conventionally. And, yes indeed, Teddy used a M95 in .405 Win. to good effect in Africa. I believe he called it his "Big Medicine" gun...
  18. Yes, they are lead. I have never had any issues with leading, but then I don't try to push them real fast either. I shoot 80 grains of loose 3F Triple Seven. Sighted dead on at 100 it is 2 inches high at 50. Never shot it much past 100 but I imagine it would shoot MOM ( minute of moose) out to 150 or so.
  19. The 460 No Excuses is a great projectile. I couldn't imagine a better bullet for moose. If I could post pictures I would show you one that was taken from under the off side hide of a 6x6 bull elk...It is a PERFECT mushroom. They also load very easily and are very accurate in my old T/C Hawken.
  20. The only modern one that I am aware of is the .450 Marlin... I may have missed one, though. There have been so many calibers that have come and gone. There were a number of 45 cals back in the black powder days, such as 45-70, 45-90, and others.
  21. There was the .307 Win , which was basically a semi-rimless .308, the .356 which was a semi-rimless .358 Win and the .375 Win, which was a modernized 38-55. Obviously they filled a niche that the shooting public felt didn't need filling. I suspect it may involve the fact that lever gun shooters tend to be tradtionalists, and traditionalist shooters prefer tried and true chamberings, such as the .30-30, .35 Rem and 45-70...
  22. Grizz... Congrats on the up coming wedding AND hunting trips.. What outfit are you hunting with in NF. ??.. If you haven't been there, you'll enjoy the Newfies. They are a hoot. Be sure you are in shape for the Newfie trip. The walking is VERY arduous up there, due to the muskeg and boggy nature of the terrain. If you aren't in good shape, it will KICK YOUR BUTT. Right now is the time to start working out.
  23. I have an idea.... Let's dress up like Mexicans with sombreros and big hairy moustaches and invade CANADA... Then when the Canadians go down to Mexico kick ass, we can sneak into Canada and steal all of thier maple syrup and beer... Canadian BEER is really GOOD !!...
  24. DAMN, Guides...You are a virtual DIRTY HARRY..!! Very impressive handgun kills...Nice muley, BTW... I would be proud of him with a rifle.. Where did you get your handgun moose ?... Years ago I worked with an old feller that had taken a couple of caribou and a moose in Alaska with his Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag.
