I don't shoot just because of the beards as it's the image every one paints as a old smart mature Tom, it's the spurs I go for, long beards aren't uncommon, 1 1/2" hooks or bigger not so common, spurs will tell Ya the age of a bird, hunted. A bird 4 straight days last year , had a 9 3/8" beard and 1 1/2" spurs gonna be hard to top, I know a guy who's got 3 1 3/4" spurred birds and its taken him almost 40 years to do so , iv seen big 11 inch beards that only have 1 inch spurs, every ones trophy is different , but big spurs float my boat Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

I'd rather call em in and see some one else kill em over me behind the gun any time , I'd get my enjoyment out of calling getting birds to react and out smarting them, iv killed my fair share of trophy birds a few I'll prolly never top but getting this kid a bird is a story he"'ll never forget the rest of his life, I could tell Ya detail for detail of my first bird , and I'll never forget his, to say I'm proud is an understatement I grew up with his older brother and watched this kid grow up just as I did hunting Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

Took my buddy's 15 year old little brother out this morning, scouted my lease out the last few days and knew of at least 2 strutters , snuck in and got set up by 5 o clock and sat down and I look to my left and there sets a 4 point shed, I told him nate look at his , iv only ever found one other shed in my life I told him this our luck right here ya don't find one of these every day and I think that got him preety excited then turkeys started gobbling every where closer to 6, at least 10 birds within the 800 yards of us in different directions, I hear a hen callin off the roost so I gave her some soft music , fly down cackle and it was on, 8 hens flew down and just outta sight, I see one hen work in the edge , then a Tom stepped out about 80 yards from us I told nate don't move Tom in the field , cock the hammer, he did, I harped on him about movement and.keeping still but seeing that bird he lost it, he moved took much and the bird was at 50 yards and he knew something was up and he turned then other way and walked over the hill, 2 Jake's followed him out and they proceeded to follow, I gave em some soft music on my glass call and got there attention , they started to come to my decoys and another bird gobbled 60 yards in the woods and I asked nate Ya wanna shoot a Jake or ya wanna wait for a Tom , I asked him this prolly 5 times and he never answered me, birds were not at 30 yards , BOOM! His single shot 12 gauge roared and his first bird was on the ground by 6:30, I asked him why he didn't answer me he said i never even heard Ya so I know he was zoned in and didn't wanna miss ,,a doubled bearded Jake one 4" and one 3" , maybe 1/4" spurs, the size of the bird doesn't matter but i was proud of the kid, he missed on a big Tom with his dad last year , I don't know who was more excited him or me, first youth iv gotten to take out, I remember my cousins taking me when i was little and me killing my first bird that started the obsession iv pursued every May since, Ya can see the shed in the picture also , Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

I don't oppose people shooting them , I just don't my self, same with deer , I don't oppose people killing smaller bucks, I just don't any more since iv matured as a Hunter , I find it ironic tho the people who preech antler restrictions and say it is a must for all hunters , don't apply that to turkeys also, I know people who pass on 120" buck but shoot the first Jake they see , Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

Bout a week ago I had one gobble 5 times to yelping, 7m, tonight in 6s I saw 2 strutting with 10 or so hens, chasing hens around , I called to the hens and got the hens talking and the Tom's gobbled a few times but not hard like it's prime time, ..yet Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

Best place to shoot a fur bearer
asav2013 replied to Woodjr55's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Hounds is right, 22 In the lungs, bleed less on the set, one tiny 22hole or maybe 2 holes, is far better then the mess is creates from a head shot, makes the skinny process way easier, some people sell the skullls, some people like keeping them like a European mount, with calling yotes or running em ya take the shot ya got, period, Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk -
Few coyotes we ran this year , 18 so far Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

iv loaded 95 gr nolser partition ballistic tips they were super accurate took a woodchuck out at 380 yards like nothing, just loaded some 58gr v maxes seem to be same accuracy but my savage seems to love every thing its simply a tack driver, haven't found a load that this gun wont produce 1/2" moa at 100, don't shoot deer with my 243 woodchucks and yotes are about it fox once and a while if the chance presents itself,

I never insinuated baiting by the changes in the picture , I took a shot at guessing what was going on "scent on the stick" and the op verified I was right, I saw he was being jumped on about it and tried to shed light that he was in fact not baiting
-
First 3 pictures nothing in front of log, 4th there's a stick sticking out of the ground on the camera side of the log , what's with that ? Maybe to put scent on?

Put some hard thought into this,I do voluntary ar for my self but a 3 point minimum AR is doing nothing but saving spike horns, 3 ponts 4-5-6 1.5 year old are dead, these deer are going to die some how, disease, predators, each other, and cars, ARs are nothing more then a antler management its not deer management, deer management is killing off a certain amount to sustain a safe population number, 4 times this year IV heard of one vehicle hitting another deer and launching it into a on coming vehicle, 3 of those 4 killed the oncoming person, my dads owned a body shop for 16 years now I work for him and 1 a day at minimum we have a new deer hit, every ones greed for antlers is only going to increase the population numbers and they will die some how whether its a bullet/arrow or any other way, I love to kill big bucks as the next guy dont get me wrong but at the end of the season I bought these tags to contribute to managing the deer population numbers to a safe number and that's exactly what I'm gonna do even if it means taking a small buck, new York is looking at all these other states that attract ALOT of hunters because of the size of there deer, its money to the state, plain and simple, the Dec surveys the estimated population number every, year and that determines how many tags are issued , now why would they automatically give you a either sex tag "buck" tag antlerless and another buck tag then possibly stack on 4 more doe tags giving each hunter a possible chance at 7 deer , but we shouldn't shoot em,cuz there horns aren't big enough, in the end after every things said, you pass that 2.5,3.5 to get a chance at him at 4.5 and he gets smacked by a car , I dont pass small bucks because they are gonna be bigger next year , I'm passing them because I know there's a bigger one out there now, deer are gonna survive and the big healthy ones are gonna survive to become mature deer and that's what makes it so hard to kill them for, every one wants it to be easy to kill a big buck but antler restriction's are not the answer, JUST MY OPINION tho, the states gonna do,what makes them, more money no matter what us hunters want or that survey that's going around that most of us prolly won't ever get to,fill out, says

Universal shooting rails

Oak sturdy vital shot gun rest , google it and check it out , just bought one , little pricey but I see it lasting me a life time, real sweet gig, I have practiced enough and literally shoot long range all year except archery season I am capable of out 4-450 on the bench or prone and this thing makes me capable of that out of a stand -
I dont think it'll beat last year for me, I saw at least 25 diff bucks chasing the first 2 weeks of gun it was insane I loved it, but we'll see! 4 days !!!

Killed my rifle buck at 1:45pm last year chasing a hot doe up out of a hardwoods revine onto a hardwoods flat almost bowl like, was sitting on the ground at the base of a tree, got there at 1:00,, 1:45 was dead, was flurring snow, none on the ground yet, was 2nd weekend of the season, 92" 2.5 yo 8 point, if it isn't the rut , there most likely to be seen between food and bed or on the food, only reason other then the rut to make them move, or people of course.

I watched a show on the hunting channel that was venison, specific and it had a chef/butcher who got in detail with hanging and processing and cooking and got In depth, on how to get the most out of the meat, it said that ideally 32-34 degree range the longer you can let it hang the better the meat will age but no longer then 2 weeks,in those conditions , preety, much you'd need a walk in fridge it freezer to accomplish this but any ways that's not the info your lookin for but I thought I'd throw it out there,

I had a slower year , last year I got 30, this year I got 18, longest was 380 yards , always heard why, coyotes are to blame because they can,lay in taller grass by a chucks hole, wait for em to pop out and slink out in to the field for a snack and bam coyote jumps on em, never seen it or had proof just what IV heard
-
Had an intense night , didnt see a deer but had a deer I'm assuming a good size buck come flyin up outta the swamp I heard it run across the cedars to 30-40 yards behind me, it stopped and just slow walked through the brush couldnt get a look at it but I could hears its antlers breaking branchs and twigs as it walked, not thrashing but more pushing his way through the brush as he walked , he had me trapped in my stand till lil after 6:30 I didnt wanna get down and bust him so I waited him out till I heard him move off and I slipped out as quiet as possible,

Loved my rages , yes the quartering away shot was iffy, did break bone and dump deer , crazy penetration on perfect shots if ya touched bone, I switched to shwacker this year only because 2 times now I have hit a hard bone and it has snapped the threaded part of the broad head off in my inserts making it impossible to reuse the arrow without serious surgery of the arrow and insert , have yet to stick one with a Shwacker but I can't wait to see what it does, hopefully the blood trails are as impressive if not better then the rages , never needed to get on my hands and knees to look for blood,

I by no means am giving up just reporting on how slow its been this year , did a tiny still hunt this morning from one of stands found some huge fresh rubs and buck tracks so picked up shop and moved the stand 150 yards to the north, to an intersection of soybean field, thick swamp and open cedars, looks to be a good seek and chase spot, spot where bucks can cruise around but still be in "safe" cover, did have a deer run by at mock 90 at 6:55 this morning never got a look at what it was , todays hunt has showed me the most signed all season hopefully things are turning around,
-
Only seen a doe and 2 fawns and 1 small doe and a 6 point, all season from a tree stand on my lease, BY FAR my worst season in 5 years for deer sightings, not even seeing does so the rut doesn't look any more promising, rifle season is always good being a swamp the deer hide out from surrounding pressure, but bow season nothin nada zilch, really discouraged at this point, haven't seen a deer in 2 1/2 weeks, I'm doin somethin wrong just don't know what it is , I know the big boys are here , I know the deer are here , I just don't see em , my rants over just needed to vent my discouragement , hope every one else is seeing deer cuz I sure as heck am not,
-
Well you hung the stand , id hunt it, beat him to it, its a rough situation for sure, I wouldn't turn him in but find a way to put an end to it with out the law, good luck

He hasn't signed in since he posted this, I'm sure there's an explanation to it all, who knows, maybe we will never know ,

Ground shrinkage maybe?
