When I had my 30 - 06 and reloaded for it, I reloaded with bullets from 110 grain to 220 grain, which made it an all around caliber for hunting.

T/C Encore center fire accuracy
thphm replied to genesee_mohican's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I have had 5 different rifle BBL's a on one of the original Encores , long ago forgot what they were but I hit everything I aimed at.presently have the 410/ 45L Colt, shoots good also. -
This is the way to feed them,And as for not planting one year, the answer is to go to the DEC WEBSITE And it tells you what to plant to keep them around. the problem is that the people in this country are just getting too lazy to go out and prepare and plant things, they find it easier to buy a block, bag or liquid to put on the ground and watch the deer eat it. As far as the deer hitting the apple grove,Where ever you go this time of the year that is what you will see them eating. And they have been doing it a lot around here the last few weeks.

DIY field point target
thphm replied to MACHINIST's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
It is more forgiving to the arrows ,because there are 4 bullseyes not just 1.After you destroy enough arrows by shooting groups like that, you learn not to shoot at one spot.A target the size of yours, 6 to 8 EA.3'' dia. circles could fit with ease. M30 -
DIY field point target

Your target is more forgiving on the arrows then the first one in the post, I would move it away from that that white tank,S**t happins. -
I have a pan as Dinsdale has in his picture on a uprite 55 gal. drum for rough boiling then from there to on of the turkey/ lobster pots and finish in SS pots on the stove, then bottle it ,filter each time. A friend has a setup made out of cement blocks with a big pan on the top,he has been using it for years an it still is holding up.Being that my drum is about burned out I just might make one of them.

The quality of last years sap was one of the best here,I have 3 jugs left. When do you people in the western part of the state start tapping?.

Google could be your best friend,There are many good reloading websites out there as 6mm bench rest, accurate shooters and others that have good info. on many calibers and loads.I do not like Kits. But a good single stage press.Caliber specific dies.I weigh powder for every case on a digital scale, have some of the best powder measures out there and they still vary some.Buy New cases as Lapua,Norma, some Winchester are good, this way you know what you have.Primer pocket uniformer tool and flash hole deburrers. But as you said Check it out first. It might not be for you. .

I was talking to a fellow a few weeks ago about deer hunting. He hunts on a farm at the edge of a very large horseshoe shaped field where he has hunted for many years with success. The blind he hunts out of is a wooden storage shed with 4 opening windows, propane heater. Most of the time he takes 2 rifles one for deer and the other for woodchucks. His farmer friend said he was having a problem with Yotes doing a lot of killing including the chucks and could he bring something for them.So he said I am going to take 1 rifle this year, My hunter class .243AI benchrest rifle. While in the blind he sees movement off in the distance, puts his binos and range finder on it ,takes aim with the rifle and in one shot with a 75 grain V-Max drops a Yote at 600 yards.

And the Original .243 cases were made from Necked Downed .308 cases.

If you have a 6" dial caliper Measure the Wall Thickness. of the Cases , most brass cases are not uniform in thickness, They are mass produced. And the wall thickness varies. And from brand to brand they are not the same thickness and that will give you different a OD on the cases.Even with the better brands as Lapu and Norma. On a 6mm / .243 bullet there is no reason to use smaller then a .241 ID of the case.I do not use the button type expanders that come with most Dies.I use Wilson dies and expanders for that and I use Redding or RCBS bushing type dies without the buttons to form the neck OD. Another thing to remember most if not all factory barrels are reamed with a .247 neck Dia. so all factory loaded ammo will fit in all factory firearms. They do not use Tight Neck or custom sizes for general sales. Welcome To The World of Reloading. It's a Learning Curve.

Put in the largest service you can afford to put in now as 200 amp or more. You might deside to build latter on and it will be a good selling point if you want to sell.It is not going to get cheeper as years go by.

I do not want to start a P****ng match here But some of the best and most accurate bench rest rifle rounds in the world Do Not Crimp there bullets.Again no need in a bolt action rifle withe the proper case dimensions for the bullet being used.
-
Take the advice Lawdwaz gave you, bookmark 6mmBenchrest .com,A lot of good information on that site.Spend the money and buy the bullet seating depth tool, a modified .243 case for it and the measuring tool also. You are spending a lot of time doing it the way you are, that you could be spending on case prep and loading. Right in the instructions that come with the bullet seating tool they tell you to check the length with At Least 5 different bullets because they are not Exactly the same. Why are you crimping the bullets ?. Are you using them in a Lever Action rifle or a Semi Auto as an AR. For a Bolt action there is no need to crimp bullets,A properly sized case with the ID. .001 smaller then the bullet OD is all you need.
-
It depends how the OAL is measured, base of shell to the tip of the bullet normally is 2.709" - 2.710". That is for a factory chamber There are some tools that use a device that simulates the bore in the chamber and measures where the bullet contacts that hole.It also could depend on the reamer that was used to make the chamber. As custom sized, tight necked ect.

I have had years ago, home made platforms, just high enough to get off of the ground when we would have heavy (4" or more) snow. no more then 10 feet above the ground, on well used trails. I would have deer stop 5' away from me looking around and never picked out by them ( wearing all bright orange ). So the only reason I can see for a 20' stand is to get more visibality.
-
Was talking to someone that did some research and they claim that the people on welfare or assistance ( I call them free loaders ) Get $ 40000.00 tax free money a year.Yea spread there legs and make more babies so they don't have to work and we pay for them while they are pissing the money away on Drugs. Which the A hole wants to make legal.
-
The only way you are going to find out how they realy fly is to cut them to size for the broadhead you are going to use for hunting and shoot them that way. Most ranges Do Not let you use broadheads on there ranges.

My 15' ladder stand has served me well for the last 6 years,I bought one without a seat and use a swivel seat strapped to the tree trunk. I also made a hinged rail ( pipe ins.wrapped ) which I use as a shooting rail.It has 2 ea. 1"sq.tubing supports that go from the ladder to the tree trunk. All off the straps are replaced every year and I also have coated SS cable wrapped around it and locked. And camo burlap that gets replaced yearly. It is in a open area where the base of two hills come down and meet.Never been picked out bu any deer coming and going from the hills which are higher the the stand. An extra 5' is not going to do me any good.

Have the money, now I have to choose…
thphm replied to CuseHunter's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Floating the BBL and bedding the action will help how well it shoots.I have taken factory Remy. plastic stocks and did it with them a lot cheaper then an H&S or Houge stock. I pillow bedded a few using aluminum sleves and epoxy.Brownells sells a number of good products to use. With a little work you will get it to shoot the way you want.
