  1. Just got mine on the internet ( DECALS ) . It will take up to 14 days to receive by USPS. Did not get a doe tag this year.
  2. They do like Hemlock , they ate the green growth 4' from the ground this past winter on mine. http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7195.html
  3. Deer will eat all of the trees you listed, Best to do it in the winter when food supply is scarce but I just cut some down for firewood this week and they were hitting them , Ash and maple. They like the buds the best . I did quite a few before the past winter and they were hitting them almost every day.. Leave around 1/3 of the Dia. of the tree , make the cut at least 5' from the ground.
  4. Bow hunters have tried for a long time to get the Oct. 1 st. opening date in the Southern Zone . Do you rely think they would want it pushed behind Rifle season, especialy the elders of them.
  5. Do your research. As you get older ( and I am older then your father is ) I think SOB and Fast F. will agree. Look how far to a Hospital, Drug store, Supermarket,Gas station with a repair shop, Motel or BB. And most important if you hunt alone Cell Phone Service, which many areas around here still Do Not have.

    Fawns ?.

Around an hour before the young doe and her fawn walked by on the same side of the house going the same direction was what I call 3 generations of does. = grandma + her young one from last year and the grandchild ( from the young one) . Now on another side of the house was the great grandma and her sister which make it 4 generations. A very rare site to see them all not to far from each other the same day. At least around here it is.
  7. I live outside of the 2 towns he hunted in the past as said taxes are not cheap as people think after you put a dwelling on it. Now the area has changed a lot in the years since he hunted here last , A lot thicker , not as many farms and not as many hunters to keep deer moving.I moved up here full time 12 + years ago and would never move back to the flatlands. But travel time if that is important once you get off of 87 or Toconic state pkw. there are no major roads. If he does not want to build this is what I would look for A piece of property that has Elec. on it or going right to it. A working well and an approved septic system. You could go up there with a camper and motor home and be very comfortable + it would be easier to sell in the future. As mentioned there is Plenty of DEP ( NYC ) and NY. State land in the area.
  8. I am wondering if fawns are still being born. I just had a young doe go past the back yard with a very small fawn walking behind her, looks as if it was not more then a week old and covered with spots. No more the 50' behind the house.
  9. Interesting vid. how they got bigger bodies and antlers. But it was just a study. Never will happen here because it is illegal to feed deer in NYS. As NFA-ADK stated the largest deer he has seen were from the western part of the state and long island, soil and what they are feeding on.I never hunted the western part of the state but there seems to be a steady supply of good size deer year to year in that area. Now on long island where I grew up there were many 100 + year old farms = good soil + left over crops which supplied good food + many stands of oak trees more food. I have seen racks from deer taken on L.I. with as many as 21 points , deer that have been gutted and weighing 250 + pounds and some close to 300pounds on the hoof with massive 10 -12 point antlers. In the Catskills I have seen and shot at ( missed under estimated the distance ) As well as 5 other people that missed for some reason a Massive 10 point and big bodied deer , well over 200 pounds and score close to 180.This deer bordered farm land , near NY-PA border. Another one in Schoharie county ( very fertile land) , 300 pounds on the hoof shot the day before opening day ,years ago. But these were not deer that you would see every day. And I do not think you would see them in the large area of heavy wooded land.In the group of us that hunted together one of the fellows had taken a deer that was 7-1/2 old the antlers were no larger the the 3 - 4 year old ones I have pictures of on my property , short and basket racks. So is it food from good soil or who that deer was bred with.
  10. I just heard some fellows talking about loaded New pick up trucks this morning $ 60,000 More the 20 times the amount when I first started to drive.
  11. NYC does not put down the amount of Salt that they use up here ( at least by me ) some days the trucks come by 3 or more times a day spreading the sand/salt mix almost every day.Threw the winter months. My 99 PU has gotten new brake and fuel lines every 3-1/2 years , the chassis is rotted threw behind the rear wheels and every other year I would have to get new rotors. And I would pressure wash it every day. I have seen the police go into car washes very often around me with there ( police ) cars and SUV's.
  12. The Troop by be uses a Local Garage , they do not have there own.
  13. Did you open it up an check the battery inside.
  14. Did you people look at the map that was posted, Sq. box lower left. It said X Bows may be used in the Regular Season, Northern and Southern Zone. That is besides the 7th. to the 20th. So you have a choice of what to use during the Regular season.
  15. If you do enough research on the Factory Ammo ( which I think you are talking about ) even with 1 weight of bullet , there are many types ,even from the same company. You have to find which bullet to use for the distance you intend to hunt. As some plastic tipped bullets will go right threw a deer at 75 yards, some will explode on contact and do no damage and some will expand and hold a good part of there weight ( that is what you want). You can never go wrong at that distance with the old reliable Fed. , Rem. or Win. soft points. Just my 2 cents.
  16. One thing they did is ( on the Reg. & Bow hunting Deer Season Map ) In the box lower left Crossbows MAY be used to hunt Deer during the Northern and Southern Zone Regular Seasons. And you have a Crossbow Season from Nov. 7 - Nov. 20.
  17. So you are 6' and 245 pounds , What is your draw length ? , Is that an arrow you use to hunt with ?. Not trying to be a wise guy but that Arrow seems to be Quite Long in the picture.
  18. Schoharie valley has to be one of the best vegie farming areas in the eastern part of N.Y. state. Went threw there yesterday on the way to Albany and back , looks like the corn is ready to pick and some others also. We had relatives that had a farm Dairy and Crops just down from the 145/ 30 split on Rt. 30, but they are long gone about 20 years ago.
  19. Correct me if I am wrong but what I got so far with the 6 pages of talk about NYODEN was that it was not just a State Wide program but it would also be broken down into Zones and WMU 's . If you look at the 2014 White Tailed Deer Harvest Summary it is broken down by Zone then by WMU and then by Town and County. There #'s are off for my Town. and the Citizen Task Force Results for my WMU were last taken in 2002 that is 13 years ago that was 2 years after the Highest deer take in this state. So as I said the number of deer have been greatly reduced ( a lot more then ) the DEC numbers say. I am not interested in what the plans are for the whole state , I am trying to find out what the plans are for my WMU. The map that was posted in the news paper in the beginning had different colored areas , My area is Green , which they have listed as Group 3 and along side of that is NH , What is or does the NH stand for ?.
  20. By looking at all of these posts on this subject as far as charts, graphs , harvest reports and Objectives compared to what I and my neighbors actually see are all pretty far off. Example The 2014 DEC harvest report and there objectives. They claim that there were 15% less Does taken then they would have like taken. Did they ever think that there were not that many Does to start with . This is what we actually see. And knowing that the past winter was a Rough one for the animals what do they do for this up coming season. They increase the amount of Does they want taken per. sq. mile. And as far as Bucks , last year by us they stayed bedded down during the day most of the season. Trail cams proved they were moving around in the dark. Not until the last week to a week in a half did they start moving during the day light or legal hunting hours. And there were not as many as they seem to think there are. So I think this NODEN is just another thing to try to make them look good and try to save there jobs.
  21. • the Catskills region, a wide grouping of southeastern New York WMUs that stretches toward the Southern Tier. What WMU's as 4xxx will be effected by this ?. Still cannot find the Map.as said there was in the first post.
  22. The deer have no problem finding apples this year , they are out there now hitting the apple trees on the side of the house with all of the branches weighted down with apples. They have been doing this the past few mornings before working there way up the hill .
  23. Go to archery shops and try as many as you can , when you find one that is comfortable to shoot you will know it. Brand name does not matter now days , too many good ones out there. And do not get caught up on the power hipe , you only need a 40 pound draw weight bow to down a deer.Speed is also not that imporntant , if you get a bow that fits you should go to a pro shop also to match the arrow spline ect. + broadhead weigh for the set up. And practice, practice.Start with a few arrows a day and work your way up.You do not want to pull something out of wack before archery season.
  24. Where the heck is this NYODN listed on the DEC website ?. I cannot find it.I would like to see if there are any listings for my area. X2 on what Larry said. As I said before the deer amount have been cut down to a fraction of what they were around my place. There were too many doe permits handed out and too many if it"s brown it"s down hunters out there. Last winter did not help either , I have not seen a doe with more then 1 fawn in my area this year. And I also have pictures on a cam near the house of Yotes , which never came this close before and on one of the travel routs of the deer.
