  1. hahahahahahahahahahahahaha...  Mexican Cartels invading the ADK's for the growing potential....  Pretty sure I would have heard about that by now.

I think they're mistaking Mexican Cartels for the Indians that grow massive quantities up at the Indian Reservation.  The Mexicans could have taken over up there but I haven't heard anything of the sort either, and my guess is that the Indians would never allow that.... or at least take it lying down.  To my knowledge it's all Indian territory still.  Mexicans go to Humboldt because they can get away with a few 10,000 plant ops.  You can't pull that off in NY I know that for sure lol

  2. I have been in some spots on the hill the would make a great grow area!  They have to be here in the spring to plant so they can be there to harvest in the fall!

I wouldn't talk about growing cannabis on this site... keep it to yourself if you do grow it and don't speak of your locations especially.  Loose lips sink ships....

But yeah I'm guessing they have to prep their sites and do a lot of work in the pre-season since their operations are in the 5,000+ plant range LOL

    It's crunch time!  ;)

  3. This thread got me talking to a few ppl...I found out that there may be more worries in NYS than before about such activities....for the Mexican cartel has set up shop in the Adirondacks....Not talking good ole boys or the local home grown but crap like what is happening out west...so I would caution any one visiting the back woods ...this all freaked me out a bit ...for this afternoon while shopping I noticed a very unusual amount of Mexican nationals in the grocery store...usually a sight during harvest not in the spring....might want to keep an eye out on Rattle Snake Hill as well...hhhmmmm

Yeah they're up near the Indian Reservation so just don't go up there to hunt.  They run that area, cops don't even like going there because it always ends in a shoot out.  I wouldn't worry about anywhere else though, they're really as common as you'd think in NY.  Just up north.  Out west they set up shop in Humboldt County and have really taken over there, ruining the forest with their chemicals and leaving garbage behind like fools.  I can't wait til the stuff is legalized so it puts them out of business and they stop killing innocent hikers/hunters to protect their crop

  4. you guys also probably have no idea what a single good pot plant can bring in cash... average? $3k. so again, right or wrong, next time you destroy a pot plant or several, think about what you might do if someone took all that dough out of your pocket. fwiw, i realize i'm coming across as defending the farmer. I've never grown in my life, I just dont see the crime with weed. Find a meth trailer? burn that sh!t down!

Very true Belo, and you have your right to an opinion so I'm not mad at you for defending the growers out there.  If someone took 30 g's from me I'd probably kill them and move to another state.  Point taken, I'll be careful next time I come across another grow like that one lol

  5. Ok so you don't drive to the statelands, those "Bad People" could very well be your neighbors or atleast know your face. Then there's the possibility of being framed by "The Bad People" with a picture of you standing over 60+ plants, but if you're not worried then neither am I.

You may see my pointing out these possible scenarios as being over cautious or that I'm trying to prove something, but truth is my hypervigilance keeps me aware of my surroundings and on point for threats and causes me to be a badass hunter! B)

Sure, I see a few of these spots every year and I know that some people actually camp out to watch their plants.

I drive to nearby locations then hike miles and miles in to where I've found these fields.  I don't have neighbors where I live, they never saw my face lol.

& I'm sure youre a badass hunter I'm not doubting that for a second, but there's no worry on my end.  They can frame me if they want but it'd never hold up in court, as there's no proof that their plants are mine.  I was hunting with my gear and came across them, it's not like I was watering them or carrying them back to destroy.  Framing is simply impossible in this scenario.

Being cautious is a good thing, but being paranoid is another.  Thanks for the concern though, I appreciate it man

  6. Memo to self...Keep this years crop off the state land. Maybe over near the Joe Martin farm would be a good spot!    Gotta say i have never heard of the root balls thing!

Yep, they caught a guy after he cut his crop down 2 years ago and brought the 200 root balls he left in the field in for testing.  It tested positive for cannabis and he was charged with a felony charge.  If you grow burn/bury that stuff lol

  7. I don't get it, you post your address then follow up with that's not my real address. You dont drink and your all hostile over this pot field you find on state land...?  Take my advice, forget the pot field and get on with your life.

Yeah I posted the address as a joke for him to send the gift basket to, did you want me to put down my real address?  Would you put down your real address?  Exactly.  I'm not hostile over the pot field if you read the first post I asked people for their stories because I thought it'd be an interesting topic since I'm not the only one who's ran into these things.  I'm taking your last post as a fare well to this thread, but I'll stay here and listen to what people have to say.  Ta Ta!   xD

  8.  What an idiotic statement to a very simple question....Did you forget what site your on?...It's a hunting site and many hunters manage their lands and GROW food plots not pot. Now if you want to be flippant with me at least put an effort into it not being  nonsensical.

This is a family site, please keep the language at bay Growalotofweed.  Calling people idiots will get you banned.  I realize people grow crops I'm a hunter who grows crops as well, it was a joke.  While tone isn't recognized through text I'll forgive you this one time.... but have some sense before you respond to any posts on this site.  Thank you.

  9. If you run around looking for trouble. it will find you!

I can't say you did the wrong thing, but sometimes ignorance is bliss. Now if you had just went back to your hunting you might not have gotten so upset.

Now the police have no evidence and who knows, "The Bad People" may have been so sophisticated to get you on a trailcam or got your info from your vehicle regristration while you were ransacking their whole years crop. So what if "The Bad People" know where you live and what you look like? What if they read your previous post which includes your address?

This is what I mean by looking for trouble.

The evidence was all over the place when I got through with them, plus they can take the root balls if need-be and make an entire case based off of that.  I've seen stories of guys being brought up on federal charges because the forgot to burn their root balls!

And there's no risk on my end, How would they know what name I am on huntingny.com?  And how would they track me down based off a trail cam even if they obtained by face with a crystal clear photo?  I don't drive to my locations so the plates arent available for them.  That's obviously not my real address posted above, it was to spite who I was responding to as a joke.  This is what I mean by there is no risk.

  10. I'm fine - heard it before, used it before, but there is a time and place for it.

Open, public family areas are not it.

Most are smart enough not to do so like in a restaurant store or any other public place, but obviously a few are not.

Shame you don't understand and probably never will.

You are the one needing the basket - let us know where to send it.

I wasn't aware children were using the site Stevo, my apologies.  I behave in public settings especially around children, if I had known that 10 year olds were chatting online (which I don't condone without parental supervision) then I would've made the title more suitable for their eyes to read.

I understand your tone, and would like it if you calmed down a little bit.  I offered you a basket out of sheer love, wasn't expecting such hatred in return ;(

You can send the basket to:

    44 western ave

    Latham, NY 12110

Thanks again, and please - no poison!  ;)

  11. I  just have to ask...was this YOUR land, private land or state land this bog is on?

This was state land.  Judging (and I hate to judge which is why I'm asking first) by your name, do you grow a lot of weed?  lol just wondering... if so then keep it on your own land!

A little weed never hurt anyone. I certainly wouldn't destroy someone else hard work

It did look like a sophisticated operation Belo.  Upwards near 60 plants (2 in each pot) and fencing built around each plant (for deer prevention I'm guessing?)

I gotta be honest it was impressive, now that I think about it I almost feel bad I shot at the plants because I suppose it wasn't doing much harm to anyone...  just the way I was brought up pretty much.  Was always taught pot growers are bad people lol

  12. I'm guessing it was the booze talking.

I dont drink, I was just thinking of how I'm probably not the first NY hunter to find a pot site, interested in everyones story!

Not unless it was a sizable plot of several hundred square feet or more, but a small patch is just some punks experimenting to see what they can produce for their own use. Something me and my friends did as teenagers and we never hurt anyone. Now if it was a meth lab that would be an entirely different story..

Yeah it was probably just experimentation, I know they mean no harm but it pisses me off how they plant on other people's property in hopes it won't get tied back to them or something... I guess it's getting legalized now so maybe it's not so bad after all lol

Internet rumors and real life happenings are 2 different things.

Can't remember ever hearing of an actual violent or even any confrontation in NY.

I have more issues about the language some think is OK on a public family site.

Oh no rumors, these are news stories I've seen on tv about growers boobie-trapping their grow for animals/humans.  Maybe large grows aren't as common in NY as they are out west, who knows tho.

I think the language I used wasn't the best, but it's nothing you haven't heard before right?  I think you'll be ok, and if not then I'll send you a sympathy basket.  I'm not kidding... ;)

  13. Last year I found a big pot field next to a bog I usually hunt waterfowl in.  I didn't call the cops, but I used those plants for target practice!!!

Let's just say those pot heads came back to some serious damage....  LOL

What would you do if you ran into some punks pot grow!?

I'm sure there are some funny stories floatin around out there...

  14. Yep false.

Water in your waders is no denser than the water outside them so it has no affect.

Like Ford said, getting out is the hard part.

Good point Wooly, that makes perfect sense.  Density plays a big role in sinking and it being the same would make it impossible for you to sink.

Glad this myth is a bust!  Phew.

  15. The myth:

"If your waist waders fill up with water upon falling in unsuspected deep waters, it will cause you to be unable to swim back out; resulting in drowning"

    True or False?

Share your input/first hand experiences on this "myth" and let's get the story straight for all the wetland hunters out there....

  16. A few years back I went into a swamp in Putnam county with a shotgun and a backpack in the dark after duck. I was headed to a particular spot where I could get out of the muck by sitting on a downed tree using my gps. Wearing chest waders, my right foot went deep into the muck - up to my knee. When I couldn't get any leverage I began to panic and worked up a serious sweat. I didn't want to dip my gun nor did I want to fall over. After a period of time I calmed down since I realized if I just stood still the situation wasn't getting any worse. I finally got my foot out by slowly shifting it and giving the muck time to fill in under the boot. When I was finally out the sun had risen and I was physically and emotionally spent, so I just walked out and got some breakfast at a local dinner and headed home early. I never told my wife that story or she would give me a hard time going out alone.

Daaaamn.  That's some scary shit my friend.  I've seen videos of people getting stuck in that muck and the more they try to get out of it the deeper they get, people have even died this way.  Thank God you were able to get out of that crap, if I ever happen to get into that kind of situation I'll do what you did and stay calm.  Thanks for the insight...

    G-Hunter,

What I call a beaver run is an underwater trail in relatively shallow water. I used to hit them once in awhile when I ran hounds. Just like I said, you are minding your own business walking along, and in one step you drop down an extra foot or two. Then, to top it off, you stumble up the other side of the run and get even wetter.

No doubt, I'll keep an eye out for those.  Thanks Coon.

If you can...Listen for automobiles as well. Look at a map on-line and plan your trip. Start slow and pick a small section and learn it. Then continue on to another section. Bring something to cut branches or other things out their. Make a path and stick to it. Tie orange markers on branches to help you get in and out all the time. Leave notes on them witha sharpy. Hope this helps. Walked many swamps in Oswego county. They are fun but have been swimming not to my liking. Good luck and keep us posted.

Yeah I don't have a GPS nor can I afford one this year so I'll take your advice and mark my trail going in, and follow that right back out.  The sharpy idea is smart as well.  Very helpful!

By the way, is the myth true about waders causing you to drown if they get filled with water?  I've always wondered...

The ponds and canals are simply barriers that keep you from traveling a straight line. They are very obvious as the areas around them are lined with the dredgings that were piled up to form banks. There is no way that you could accidentally step into them unless you are trying to travel at night. Also, around these canals and ponds, the muskrats have pretty thoroughly undermined the banks at the waters edge and what may look like solid dry ground, may cave away under your weight.

Actually, these dredged out areas are good places to regain your bearings because the banks are elevated and give you a view from above the cattails of surrounding landmarks. What these features do pose is an interuption to maintaining a straight line of travel to maintain. That makes compass use a bit frustrating, because you have to do a lot of twisting and turning to get around these things. Some of those canals are quite long and irregular in shape. Maybe a GPS unit might be more useful. If you plan on going out in an area like this, I would suggest a good detailed aerial map might make planning such a trip a whole lot easier.

Thanks for the heads up on the muskrat "traps".  I'll bring a probing stick with me and slam it down on the future ground I track over, hopefully that'll prevent any collapses.  I use google earth to get a good idea of what the area looks like, and then mark my entry points accordingly.  Printing a copy out and bringing it with me on foot wouldn't be a bad idea actually... thanks Doc!

  17. The only thing that freaks me out in a swamp are the leaches.

I've seen them stuck to everything from snakes, to frogs, turtles, fish, and ducks.

Never had one latch on to me, but I've had a few hitch hikers on my boots and pant legs. I like sloshing around in the swamps here in the summer to photograph the critters and insect life that's so abundant there, but I'm constantly double and triple checking myself for the little suckers!

haven't ran into them yet, but then again I've just been scoping out swamps on their shores.  What creeps me out are the TICKS.  I'm always covered with about 30-40 of those bastards when I leave... leaches are no better though, can't wait to encounter my first dozen!  ....NOT lol

We have a swamp just north of Naples that has some very thick cattails that are well over your head. When you get a ways out into it, getting turned around and disoriented is a very real possibility. Then to make matters worse, there are several sets of canals and ponds that were dug by the DEC out in the middle that can force you to detour and switch-back. And then if you really get messed up, there is a river that will stop you cold. I was out there one time and spent a few hours that I really didn't want to. I never did go back out there again.

that's not too good, the swamps I go in sound a lot like that actually.  you recommend just bringing a good compass man?  and are there any ways judging by surroundings to tell where there are ponds/canals dug before stepping in them?  I feel like a probing stick can only do so much, if there's another way to spot any red flags before plunging into them with just a stick to guide my way that'd make me feel more confident in the swamp for sure.

  18. watch out for beaver runs. Nothing like walking in knee deep water and suddenly dropping in up to your chest.

what's a beaver run?  are they near the dams at all?  never heard of these things... not crazy about going swimming though.  Plus I have some waist waders and I've read that they can cause you to drown - some disagree but then some swear by it.  I wonder what the truth is...

Walking thru a swamp one time one one leg went into a sink hole right up to my waist. It scared the crap out of me when I went down. I pulled my leg out of there super fast. Beside a boot full of mud and shaky legs for a few minutes no big deal!! Always watch ur step!!

I know that feeling, not a good one.  Will waist waders bog you down if theyre filled up with water you think?  I mentioned it above but I'm tryin to get everyones feedback on this rumor

  19. One of your best freinds in a swamp can be a good walk or poke stick to test areas that look bad.

The other is a rope strong enough to pull you out if you get stuck. And a cell phone.

The rope idea is pretty smart actually, how would you set this up?

Tie it around a tree then just keep tension on it as you wade out into the swamp?  Or would you actually tie it around your waist instead of just holding it?  Thanks man
