  1. This is the only reason I use a WB. Got sick of arrows falling off the rest. I dunno how you guys without a WB deal with it.

This is why I will stick with my WB.  It holds the arrow nice and secure and works well.  All the new toys won't help much, practice and comfort with your bow is much more important on new toys for your bow.

  2. Hey all... Been seeing a lot of signs saw does and buck opening day. Hunting along rocky point road... Past whiskey rd. And FYI... SOMEONE is poaching deer around spots 4 & 5! Two weeks ago at spot 4 there was a gutted spike buck with his antlers cut. This week found anothet shot yearling doe at spot 5 just rotting. Listen up you mother F...ers. I've been recording times and plate #s at these spots now for a couple weeks. I gave the info and pics to DEC and a description of the truck who i think it is. Probably whos ever hard / ladder stand is back there off spot 4. If i find you doing that shit out there... You wont be able to walk your loser ass back in the woods to hunt again, let alone dive after I f-up that nice truck. Watch yourself! I know and now so does DEC.

Wow that is messed up. I hope it isn't anyone on this site.  Marine97 have you had much luck in Rocky point as of late?

  3. I use a nice mask that matches my camo perfectly.  Keeps face warm in cold weather, keeps the scent from my head contained and its much easier to take off.  I would argue that covering your face might be the most important camo you put on because it shines in uv light more than most clothing.

  4. So I was out of state recently and stopped in a Sporting goods store to buy a pack of broadheads so I can outfit the rest of my arrows. (I have 3 Rage Mechanicals)  I was torn between the g5 montecs and the Nap Hellrazors but ended up buying the hellrazors. When I get home I see that the hellrazors are curved on the bottom and it LOOKS like a barb almost....but I cant tell if its greater than 90 degrees or if its illegal.  Any of you guys have these?  Are they legal to hunt with in NY? I haven't opened the box so I can return them...but I do like the broadhead.

I think they are good to go but I wanted to make sure before I get busted on the hunt, and its my first time buying fixed broadheads.

  5. I haven't tested my climber out yet but I want to soon,  where do you guys practice with your climbers?  I don't want to have to drive all the way to where I am going to hunt to practice but I also don't want to alarm anyone by climbing trees in my town.

  6. yea I hunted rocky point this morning still no damn deer! I wish it would get colder out they just don't seem to be moving like they were last year.  You see anything at rocky point? I was at 11 today. I also used permathin today and no ticks what so ever that I have seen so far.  I think they go through the clothes themselves if they sense heat and moisture. Last time I had like 12 of em

I had seen one deer at rocky point my first time out scouting a few months ago...as for this hunting season I have SEEN nothing.  I have found that hearing is much more productive in finding traces of deer nearby.  I have heard grunting nearby once but I have only been out 2 times.....work keeps me a weekend warrior and unfortunately I was away last weekend so I couldn't get out.  PM me maybe we can compare notes lol.

  7. lol yea they are bad on long island.  I was at rocky point and came out with a ton of em...nasty  little things

I also got them in rocky point.  They only got to my left ankle area though....nowhere else.  And I have no idea how they got to my skin....I was covered head to toe, tucked pants inside socks and wrapped tape around my boots up over my ankle halfway up my calf....and still I got bit.  I also had sprayed all my clothes with permathin including my boots and socks.

  8. I am a brand new hunter, just got my license and have been studying and reading up on the sport for a few months.  I see a benefit with trail cameras because I do not live close enough to the areas I hope to hunt in order to scout them as much as I would like to.

You make it seem like trail cameras are cheating somehow, but in order to effectively use trail cams you need to find .... the trails.  Isn't that half the work?  Yes they give you a great advantage in figuring out deer patterns and what time would be best but you still need to find the deer sign and trails in order to make use of them. If you have the time to spend all day in the field then yes you will see more and know a lot more about deer movement and good places to setup than a guy like me who only has SOME weekends free to hunt and scout.  In order for me to have a real shot of bagging anything I am seriously considering a trail cam to get a better idea of deer movement so I can maximize my hunt.  Right now I am trying to learn as much as possible so I can hopefully bag something this year, and trail cams will help.  Doesn't make me any less of a hunter than you, just significantly less experienced which I am all too aware of.

  9. The area is In this sand bar there is a downward slope into the middle where there appears to be heavy traffic and seems like a good ambush area since there are shrubs above it from which i can hide behind.   Probably the best part of finding this sand bar....huge tracks the size of my fist, which i hope means a big buck passes thru.

  10. So this being my first hunting season and doing it with a bow I went out yesterday and saw no deer.  So after i decided it was time to leave i figured i would scout some more and maybe find a better area to setup.  Well not 5 minutes in i found a huge clearing with tons of tracks running thru the sand and forest surrounding it on all sides.  I found a few shrubs i could use as cover (ground blind) with some at a higher vantage point and some a little lower.  Does this open sandy field sound like a good place to hunt?  Is there anything i should do in terms of setting up in order to increase my chances?  I dont have any trailcams this year so i have no idea what time these deer that leave all the track behind are walking thru there.  What do you guys think?   Also, in all my scouting i have found many tracks but no rubs, scrapes or dedicated food sources.  Where i am hunting there are acorns and food on the ground everywhere so hunting a food source has kind of escaped me.  Thoughts?

  11. I have the goliath.  You will love it and it held me just fine at around 340lbs last year.  Decent size platform too and really comfortable.  You will not regret that purchase.  Get an extra bungee chord to cinch it together when you pack it in to avoid any noise.  I also taped some extra padding around it to avoid any clanking of metal.

As stated before, please tie the top and bottom together and stay tethered to the tree when climbing and descending.

Glad you like it.  I will definitely get the extra cord you mentioned and I will tie the 2 pieces together when climbing.  I have done a lot of reading on this and I know that losing the bottom half of the climber is the most common worst case scenario when climbing.  The other issue I have read about is the cord for your feet breaking ( not on summits but other brands).  Have you had this issue or any others I should keep an eye out for?

  12. id strongly recommend googling third hand archery and picking up their stabailizer straps and bow holder. No exageration, the best 40 bucks ive spent in a long time. the bow holder makes it so you can climb the tree with your bow, and the stabailizer straps hold the top of the climber firm while your standing.

I will definitely look into this.  I was wondering what kind of bow holders and accessories you guys used to prevent unwanted noise when going for a shot.
