  1. it was a knife that you attached to the end of a rod or something to make a long spear. but I have NEVER been in a situation like that and if I was of course I would use my best judgement
  2. usually have an Axe in my car or a mini machete on my person. deer search guy I met once had a knife he could use as a spear. I liked the spear knife thing and will prolly get one myself. but a knife to the heart I would think would be best
  3. this pisses me off, now correct me if im wrong but don't sharp shooters just use bait to bring in the deer then shoot away? don't see how that's even fair. I cant use bait to up my chances at getting deer but the state is ok with paying some guys to kill a bunch of deer. POINTLESS to be a no bait state if you are gonna do this
  4. Nice bear, congratz. how old is your son, cant wait to get my boys into hunting
  5. Nerves, basically went dumb when she came in. settled down after a few seconds but then she started watching me. held by bow at full draw for a while (recurve) relaxed for a bit. she was back on me. all the while I was fighting with my harness (was to low and hitting my back arm) and I had my thick fleece neck gaiter on pulled all the way up. was in awe that I missed. was back in the woods today stump shooting before I left, was nailing my shots from the ground/stand. guess it all goes to inexperience. went back to the same spot hoping that doe would walk back in. but didn't see not a one deer all day. go figure, hopefully they are back next week.
  6. nope, but it was 10:30 at night and we tracked for over 2 hours and glanced the property noting there were no lights on in the place. he wasn't able to get back out there the next day cause he had to go upstate to help someone else. don't think two guys dressed in camo coming up to your door late at night with flashlights asking for permission would have been a welcome thing. now if it was laying in their driveway, that's a different story. but since it seems only the dog could find the trail we called.
  7. yup called them, they came out. deer ran up on private property and it was game over. was late at night by time we finished up
  8. this is my first year and I don't really have a spot I hunt, I been doing sterling / Westchester / long island.
  9. I WISH there was snow on the ground, but im down in Westchester right now. gonna head back out in the AM. decided to give my spot a day off since I just shot the momma doe and head out tmw to see if any of the others that where with her come on back. oh, that was my second mistake. I shot the biggest doe and she was on it, from the minute she walked in she knew something was up. the others that were with her didn't know what was going on and just went about their merry business.
  10. Shot my first deer yesterday morning. Thought I had a good shot, honestly now that I think about it I don't know where the arrow hit just where I aimed for. recovered the arrow it was a pass through, white hair and blood from nock to point. not a lot of blood on the arrows but I saw a bubble in one of the blood trails so I figured it was at least one lung cause he ran far. shoulda backed off him the minute I realized he was running over 200 yards, but I didn't with all the excitement. thought he was bleeding hard cause in some spots there was a TON of blood, while in others it was just drips and spots. finally I lost the trail after maybe 300 yards as he came to an open area that had two intersections. got on my hands and knees looking for blood in EVERY direction then walked a bit father out looking where I could. finally went to eat lunch. at about 2 and give it a think. called deer search from the woods but of course no reception. did a bit more looking all over and couldn't find him. finally left the woods and drove a ways till I got reception, got deer search and the guy came out at around 8:30. Those dogs are AMAZING found the trail probly 50 yards away from where I lost it and the blood was just drips at that point but he found it. kept following for another 100 yards and finally the deer crossed the road into private property. GO FIGURE, the guy from deer search had to go find another guys bear further upstate in the AM so we called it a night at about 10:30 at night. live and your learn. think I pushed him to another guy who pushed him outa the woods, had he run in the other direction deeper in the woods I woulda found him, if I had the mind to just back off. Guy from deer search said the blood looked like a liver shot, INCHES from where I aimed. was a broadside shot and I was aiming First to low now that I think about it, right above his right leg and I was about 17 feet up between 13 and 16 yards away. big thanks to deer search for coming out. gotta love lady luck.
  11. spent my first time out in the woods in like 20 degree weather. suited up from head to toe on my way in cause when I was dressing at my car I was freezing my bunns off. walked for about a half hour to my stand and was sweating up a storm. sat for a bit and I was fine. then after maybe an hour I was freezing my bunns off once again. good thing I brought a change of cloths. switched my shirt out on the stand and I was good. WONT be makin that mistake again
  12. Whats that in the middle of the road ?
  13. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/watershed_protection/access.shtml gotta have a permit to enter DEP lands. i just started hunting a few WMA's and some that i have went to have little pull in areas along the side of the road. others i have just pulled up along the side of the road. always display your permit. not sure about t hose areas you will be heading to though
  14. news said he wasn't wearing blaze orange. but honestly I have seen deer in the woods and orange or not. the guy got trigger happy.
  15. I just started this year myself. started scouting in like july / august in sterling. from all the scouting and studying the topos I saw deer about 3 different times in sterling during bow season and I hunted every weekend. Never got close enough to take a shot. I was advised the best time to scout is right after the season ends when there is snow on the ground and tracking is easier. for now i was told to just pick an intersecting trail and set up there and pray i get lucky. I don't gun hunt so im in Westchester now with NO scouting done at all prior to going in. walking down a trail at night leaving the woods i saw a deer and he looked me dead in the high beam never saw one during the day though. all i can say for what i have seen of sterling is what was told to me find a trail that was heavily used and set up their, worked (kinda) as i got two good sightings but moved out after bow ended (only hunt on sundays). gonna go back for late muzzle MAYBE as im starting to like westchester
  16. called dec and was told if I shoot a button buck I can use an antlerless. course I didn't pose that question with regard to an AR restriction area
  17. WOW congratz jeebus, here I am praying for a shot on one, man I hate living in the city
  18. GOT to see that video congratz man, finally broke the ice
  19. Thanks for he info. Been pretty slow for me so a break is edefinitly due
  20. man i cant wait to fill my freezer like that
  21. wont make it to the end of the season...
  22. where the heck do you park at Big Penninsuala. started checking out westchester and saw some good sign in a few places. want to go take a look at Big Penninsuala but i cant tell were to park. im read it can get pretty bad over there so im not rushing there and will prolly just wait like two more weeks before hunting it but i would like to get an afternoon scout or two in on it first. anyone hunt it? can you just pull over on the side of king street and its ok? dont want to come back to a ticket a tow or a wrecked car thanks in advance
  23. Had my stand in the woods for about 3 weeks. Pulled it to move to new spot. Bolts were loose on stand and treesticks. Tightend em all down and as i was doing it noticed a bolt bent. Glad i pulled it and checked the bolts. Woulda been a nasty fall if one snapped from not being tight
