  1. More of a concern to me would be the excessive taking of does in my area. I know this is not a concern and welcome to most but in 4W the deer seem to just be making a come back doe permit wipe out of the 80's plus the coyotes are wreaking havoc on the fawns here in the spring. This area can not see a high doe kill yet.

  2. I really dont want to open a can of worms here, but I still cant understand how anyone would go in the woods full of gun hunters without wearing blaze orange ! ( not sure that was the case here ) I dont get it. I understand the whole concealment thing, I wear camo during the gun season but put an orange vest and hat on. BUT it's only a deer, I rather come home at night.

I was hunting with a friend of mine Sat afternoon. We split up and I went about 200 yards from him. I got out of my stand at sunset and as soon as i started walking all I can see was the orange glow of his jacket from over 150 yards away. Because of that I knew right where he was in the low light. It convinced me even more not to be caught in the woods without it. Just my opinion.

Prayers to the family from a fellow firefighter.

  3. The camps by me shoot all day on Friday before opener, and they all go out and walk around in the afternoon looking for a place to sit the next day. Then by Sunday everyone is complaining that the deer aren't moving lol. But thats what you get when you hunt state land. The deer are there, saw them all bow season, and until we condition ourselves ( be me anyway ) to keep quiet and stay out of the woods the few days before the opener we will continue to make these deer nocturnal.

I hunted for 3 days without seeing a deer however the deer where in my plot by 7:30 - 8:00 pm each night, including a big eight chasing does.

  4. I have a HSS harness and I hate the big azz buckles that it has. They are loud in the stand and sounds like you are drying a cinder block when they are in the dryer. What safety harness is light for the early season hunts and the buckles arent like a a damn bunch of rocks banging around when I dry the harness

This is what I use. I dont have the buckle issues like i did with the older version I had.. Hang it outside to dry instead of the dryer.

  5. Warm and windy weather, with less hunters to push them. They were just lieing down all day and feeding at night. That is how it has been by me.

Totally agree! heard one shot Saturday, no one in the camps by me got a deer this weekend. Totally nocturnal by me too. Had a nice eight chasing 2 does in my food plot last night at 7:20 ( spot light on side of my cabin lights up most of the plot ) Been seeing the deer come into the plot mostly after 8:00 pm

  6. Our camp policy is no firing the rifles after the sunday before the season starts.  Gives us a week to get the woods quiet.  All the guys head up to their stands the week before, drop off what they want, and not head back up till opening morning on saturday.  We all try to get there early on Friday afternoon to do the important things like buy all the kegs, get all the food, and start cooking up the tenderloins.  Somebody always has smoked turkey, venison pepperoni, chili, stews, and I bring up the peace-de-resistaanse,  the italian antipasta from Aurthur Avenue and the homemade pasta fagioli.

We dont shoot either. The camp next to us will start shooting around noon Friday, and that will go on until dark non stop, thats why I am trying to get things set up for bowhunting where I am pretty much alone. It's tradition for these guys though so I just go with the flow and get in the thickest crap I can on opening day

So when is dinner served ?? I will be there :-)

  7. I shower before I hunt with the usual hunting soaps, I use scentlok base layers as well as scentlok camo. Keep my hunting clothes in a big rubbermade container and spray down when I get dressed. I will say I have seen an improvement on how long a deer downwind of me will hang while trying to figure out whats up. I think thats the real benefit, that a buck might give you a few extra moments to get a shot off instead of taking off like a bat out of hell like the old days. I have had deer downwind never know i was there, and I have had them smell me right away, but they do get closer than before.

One thing not mentioned here ! you can go thru all the usual scent free ritual, but you need cover your mouth with a scent blocker material. Your mouth is where a lot of scent comes from.

  8. Opening morning of rifle season starts on Friday by me as far as the deer are concerned ! Friday the camps fill up, then the shooting " sighting in " starts. That lasts most of the day, then when that gets boring the camps empty out, as everyone heads up the hill to check and make sure the rock or stump they sit on is still there, some need to look for a spot to sit cuz they have no clue where to go. It's all part of the tradition here.

I will leave camp at 4:30 Friday morning and head up the mountain with my bow to hunt the edge of a thick bedding area loaded with rubs and scrapes. Hopefully I can sit all day and catch one of those critters getting the heck out of the low areas :-)

  9. A beautiful week this week for hunting. Cold temps, a little snow in places. Opening weekend of gun. 50's fri and sat. Close to 60 sunday. 50's on monday. From tues on out from what I can see temps in the upper 30's to low 40s. Really disappointed in mother nature for the warm temps shes giving us for the weekend. Really hope there is a drastic change in forcast but dont think it will happen

It could be worse! I've spent many an opening weekend in the pouring rain, heavy wet snow, wind.........I don't like the warm temps either as I hike a long way with a climber on my back but it will be cool enough in the mornings. Good luck Sat.

  10. I think there is a case about this currently. It may change. I hope

I read that in the outdoor news. The court ruled anyone who does not have a residence in NY but has a vacation home there has a right to apply and carry a pistol in NY. However I have my doubts about your lovely governor will ever allow it.

  11. That's one fond memory I have from opening mornings of yesteryear.  NO sounds of ATV's!  I know it will be hard for many to believe here, but hunters actually used to hunt on foot!  LOL  I guess it was somewhere in the 90's that hunters officially became lazy a$$es and needed motorized power to take them to where their feet used to.

They all used to use Jeeps and quads to get up the hills way back in my area of the Catskills, that's until the DEC stopped and fined all of them. This was in the mid 80's when it was more of a sport to drive the Jeep up the mountain than it was to hunt. It took a few years before everyone said the heck with climbing mountains and stopped hunting here. After some time the hunting improved because of it. Less hunters has made the herd grow, now there is a good healthy herd here, by me anyway, and I get more big bucks on my cameras than small ones now. Back in the day you were proud to shoot a spike.

It sucks to have to climb steep mountains to hunt at my age but the quality of bucks I see here keeps me motivated.
