State Colleges used to be more or less free and heavily subsidized by Tax payers. The difference today is that everyone goes to College because a high school diploma no longer gets the good jobs it used to 30/40 years ago. And so now College has become a heavily competitive environment, with each school expanding facilitates and non academic departments to attempt to make things more attractive.This further inflates costs. I work in Academia. The amount of money wasted on useless administrators and sports facilities is phenomenal. Education itself is way down the list of priorities today. And so today more Tax payer money is thrown at education to push students into a system many don't belong in, because the reality is that there are fewer good paying jobs around and now employers require a degree to help separate the wheat from the chaff. Of course, now that everyone has a useless degree, this is no longer a good gauge of suitability. The whole system is a snake eating its own tail. Not much left to chew on either.
