Things seem to be a little delayed where I hunt (8N and 9P). Very little scrapes or rubs yet even in the typical areas they usually tear up. Typically I really like the week of the 4th but feel a week later may be best this year

Do you notice less hunters now then 10, 20 yeaes ago?
gastrodoc replied to LJC's topic in Deer Hunting
I have noticed a huge decrease in only 10yrs. Last opening day in Allegany Cty, you couldnt even tell it was opening day given the low number of shots. I remember it used to sound like a warzone. There are also fewer and fewer people at the camps compared to only a few yrs ago -

8N. Windy, warm, and humid. Nothing so far -
Unless you are absolutely sure and/or with someone with considerable experience in identifying , do not eat wild mushrooms! I have seen several people go into liver failure and die from misidentification. Several years ago, we had several members of an Asian family die after misidentifying mushrooms

Wood burning stove restoration
gastrodoc replied to crappyice's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
Please don't pay $125 for that stove. It is worth nothing more than scrap value. It cannot be trusted with a crack. A brand new equivalent stove is not much more. Carbon monoxide poisoning is nothing to joke around with especially in a small shed! -
Screw-in Steps
gastrodoc replied to Rebel Darling's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
My advice like others above is to get away from screw in steps. I used to use these all the time until I starting to use climbing sticks. They are much easier, quicker, and safer and do not damage trees unlike screw-ins. Also, what will stick in my mind forever is my friend slipping on screw-ins and being gutted with a 16 inch gash across his belly. He needed to be air-lifted to a hospital and lost 14 inches of his small bowel--he was damn lucky he was hunting with others or he could have lost his life My favorite have become the Hawks sold by Dicks. They are very high quality and pretty much equivalent to Lone Wolf for a fraction of the price- 25 replies

Im at 1800ft in the Fingerlakes. I have an old orchard with 15-20 mature apple and peach trees. The last two years we had so much fruit we were begging people to take some. This year all of my trees are bare.

red fox. Black tipped ears and it appears tail is tucked behind legs

I used screw in steps for years until I found climbing sticks. Now, I will never use the screw ins again. They damage trees and are dangerous. My buddy was damn near eviscerated by one when he fell a few years back

I agree with the article. I also hunt 8N and have a little over 120 acres of prime habitat. I have several observations from this season. 1) The paucity of gunshots. Whereas other opening days sounded like a war zone, I couldnt even tell it was opening day this year. Similarly, I counted a total of 3 shots within earshot, likely miles away, on Thanksgiving morning 2) Complete lack of hunters parked on roads, at state land access points, etc 3) Minimal deer movement. I sat dusk to dawn on both Sat and Sun opening weekend, and yes saw deer, but nowhere near the numbers I have seen on past opening days. In the past, I was used to seeing 30-40 deer on opening day. This year I saw 6. All movement seems to be right at dusk and dawn. I have had several days of zero deer sightings which never happened in the past. Again, this is 8N an area that the DEC states is overrun with seer

Sick of so few deer sightings an my place in 8N. Made the trip to my place in 9P and hunted yesterday evening and all day today. Zero deer! Unbelievable. I cant remember the last time I got skunked up there. There also was almost no shooting--it ususally is a war zone up there on opening weekend. All the camps up there are saying the same. Worse season in decades. -
Hunted 8N for the opener and I have got to say it was the slowest opener I have had in my 20yrs of deer hunting. I saw a train of 3 small bucks at first light and thought it was going to be a great day. Then I didnt see another deer until noon!! The next deer after that was at 430pm! I sat all day and saw a total of 5 deer. This is in a stand and prime property that I normally see 30-40 deer opening day on past years. There also was mininmal shooting. I counted one nearby shot between noon and close of shooting time. Crazy!

What bullet are you using this season
gastrodoc replied to ATbuckhunter's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Nosler Accubond 110gr 25-06 with 49.5gr IMR 4831 COAL 3.268. One hole groups at 100yrds out of Rem 700 Sendero -
No argument here. I had 4 days off last week and it was 78-80 degrees each day with minimal deer movement. I had 2 days off this week and had 50mph winds. And now they are predicting opening day next weekend is going to be in the 60s!!

it isnt just Remington and it isnt just cheap guns. I have a Ruger Red Label 28ga that has been sent back to Ruger twice for the vent rib falling off while shooting. I recently was looking at a Kimber rifle at the local shop and the stock was so poorly fitted that the stock was touching the barrel on one side and had a 2mm groove on the other side. I guarantee you it would have shot like poop. There just seems to be very poor quality control all around these days
-
For the areas I hunt, it wont make a world of difference for opening weekend. It is utter chaos for miles around that weekend

Has anyone else hunting region 8 noted difficult wind conditions over the last few days? I hunt 8N and today and yesterday afternoon the wind was all over the place. Forecasted winds for this afternoon were WSW and on stand would blow from every direction even East/Northeast. I have never seen such difficult wind conditions. Anyone else notice this?

No doubt. The Scottsville/Caledonia area holds some tremendous deer. In 2008 I shot a 10pt slob on Oct 30th that weighed 230lbs dressed. He broke the rafters at the processor who still has a picture of the deer hanging in his shop.
-
The gun you speak of is also 2-3x the cost of the 835. It is doubtful it outperforms it to a significant degree
-
I love my 835. Quality definitely seems higher than the run of the mill 500. It is a great waterfowl and gobbler gun. Not sure about barrel availability for slugs so would check that out. As long as you can get a deer barrel for it you cant go wrong

Remington 700 Sendero .25-06 with Zeiss 2-12x, 110gr Nosler Accubond handloads if wind is right for my ridge crossing stand. If not, Browning BAR .270 with Leopold

Biz that price seems completely crazy Going rate for a survey in the fingerlakes is $40/acre. I just had my 110 acre piece surveyed for a littel under four thousand. My friend had his 99 acre piece done for $3500. Both pieces have lots of topograhy so were not easy surveys In some areas, the actual surveyed boundries were a good 50ft different from where they appeared to be on tax maps etc

Dead as a ghost in 8N. Sat all day Ticks are a huge problem in Rochester area. There have been inumerous cases of Lyme Disease here and I know several that have tested positive. As Larry said above, it is standard practice for anyone exposed to a tick to be treated for Lyme given the high percentage of ticks infected with Lyme here. Both of my dogs have tested positive for Lyme. When we let them out, we pick off 3-4 ticks once they come back in. It has been a horrible year for ticks -
I love my Summit Viper. I can sit all day it is so comfortable. Never had any issues climbing with it either
