  1. Anyone in the Westchester, Putnam, southern dutchess area have a harness I could have?
  2. I'm hoping to stay around the 300 range. The two I have been looking at are around 200, well the Barnett is on sale right now for 200, normally it is closer to 3 from what I can find.
  3. Hello all. So now that crossbows are legal again in NY I am looking to get into hunting with one. Up until now I have always been a shotgun guy, mossberg 835 and Ithaca deerslayer. Like many guys these days I am on a very tight budget. I have read great reviews on both the SA sports fever and the Barnett recruit. I'm leaning towards a recurve right now because of price and ease of use and repair. anyone use either of these or have any suggestions for other bows to look into? Looking forward to some advice.
  4. Sorry I should have said I live in dutchess county and work in Westchester county.
  5. Hey all! I'm new to hunting but realize the need for a decent stand. I was wondering if anyone is looking to get rid of a climbing stand at a decent price. I'm not looking for anything fancy just safe and not too heavy.
  6. So my first turkey hunt ended with one tom taken by my cousin and nothing for me. We were set up and called in a group of four Jakes. I was all set when one got within about 20 yards but kept hoping for a better shot. Well as you can guess my waiting resulted in me not getting a shot. My cousin kept calling but at that point they had head off. About 4 minutes later a tom comes walking in about 50 yards from me. He was a totally silent and never came in closer and I watched him disappear too. To my cousins credit he kept calling and calling hoping to get those Jakes back. I heard them gobbling and they seemed to be headed back and BOOM a shot rings out to my right. Next thing I see is that same tom from a few minutes ago down. Turns out he snuck back out silently and was only about 15 yards from my cousin. Nice bird 18.5 lbs with 8.5 inch beard and 7/8 inch spurs. We kept falling for a while longer but birds never came back within range. Although I am disappointed with myself for not taking my shot, I cannot believe how exhilarating the hunt was. When those first birds came in and I was watching them get closer and closer I could hear my heart beating. So much adrenaline was pumping that I know I am hooked now. Hoping to get back out tomorrow morning and this time the first clear shot I get I am taking!
  7. Just got down to my spot in Putnam County. Waiting for my partner to get here so we can get into our spot. Wish me luck on my first turkey hunt.
  8. bkln - where in dutchess are you hearing them? I haven't heard a sound yet but I am also new to turkey hunting so maybe I am just not recognizing it.
  9. Napping - would you mind telling me the general area where you saw some good signs? There is quite a bit of huntable land at fahnstock. I am planning on heading in to scout a bit this week and would really appreciate a bit of a point in the right direction.
  10. Thanks Liz. Any dep land in particular better than others. I was thinking about trying over around ninham mountain too. The dep land off of 301 was nice during deer season but I don't know how turkey is over there.
  11. I'm looking forward to my first spring turkey season this year. Actually my first time turkey hunting at all. I was wondering if it is worth heading into Fahnstock State Park? Any other suggestions for public land for spring turkey would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  12. Well my buddies situation is his problem it just screwed up my plans, lol. I was looking online and see that there is several hundred acres of dep land in east fish kill which is not far from me at all. Maybe I will give that a shot. I got the dep access permit already so I might as well use it. Anyone ever been to this area?
  13. Lol no unfortunately he doesn't supply the deer. I will get the number and post it tomorrow
  14. There is a guy in verplank that does a great job. It is a side business for him but during gun season he has 3-4 guys butchering with him 10-12 hours a day. I can get the name and number for you if you want.
  15. Shawn - I'm gonna be using a shotgun, mossberg 500 to be more precise. Wood jr - thanks for the idea about looking up state land, I guess I should have mentioned that I had planned to hunt on some property that a friend of mine owns/lives on outside of new paltz but he has been asked to leave the property and homey his wife. This all happened about 3 days ago so now I'm in a pinch. I thought I was all set with my place until my buddy told me his wife threw him out. I had already been up there and scouted out a place to set up and was even lucky enough to catch a glimpse at a pretty nice sized buck early in the morning about two weeks ago. With all that said I was hoping some of the more experienced hunters could point me in a good direction, or at least tell me places to avoid.
  16. Hey there all. I'm new to hunting, this is actually my first year giving it a shot. I only have one friend who hunts and our schedules very rarely coincide. It looks like we are gonna have to wait till right after thanksgiving for me to get out for my first hunt. He has hunted his whole life and got a nice 6 pointer the last day of bow season. I was wondering if anyone out there could recommend any good spots in dutchess or putnam that I could try out late in the season. My buddy normally only bow hunts and spends his time in westchester. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Hope opening day was good for you guys out there.
