  1. Happy Veteran's Day to all veterans.
  2. That is awesome having the little guy out there with you. What a great way to keep the hunting tradition alive and well.
  3. I try not to kill any fawns, however I would be lying if I said I have not.I killed a few button bucks because I wanted venison and had none(key word WANTED).I killed some button bucks and regretted it and others I didn't.I have seen button bucks that I couldn't believe were only 6 months old they were so big and others were tiny.I also agree that button bucks are just not mature enough to be afraid of much so they are vulnerable.I would PERSONALLY prefer a big bodied deer but I admit the young ones were delicious just like veal.I leave the choice up to the hunter because around where I live a lot of deer and fawns get whacked by cars and that is a complete waste most of the time.I believe a hunter will evolve and decide for themselves if a deer is "too small" or not.
  4. Great job tracking that deer, enjoy the venison.
  5. About 20 yrs. ago I drove 1 1/2 hrs. for opening day of firearm deer season and found out I left my jacket home.It was very cold but luckily another guy had an extra jacket he let me borrow. I had a detachable quiver another time and climbed a tree with a climbing stand only to see the quiver lying on the ground disconnected from the bow.I had to climb back down and get it. I drove home from bowhunting once and couldn't find my bow in my truck, damn I left it on the ground near the woods.I had to drive an hour round trip to retrieve it.Those are only the ones I can think of- there are more,I'm sure.
  6. Congratulations Fletch on a beautiful buck ! I enjoy reading your journal entries.
  7. I missed an old buck yesterday at 15 yds.I did everything right until I put the wrong pin on him in the 30 seconds I had to make a shot - right over his back.If bowhunting were easy then every hunter would do it.The challenge and excitement keeps us coming back for more.
  8. Now I know why the bleat in heat can hasn't worked for me, I thought I was supposed to let the call bleat until it hit bottom.I will have to try shorter bleats.
  9. I watched a young buck chase a doe around this evening. On the drive home 3 doe were running down the center of the road at me. They didn't want to go back in the woods it seemed. I am guessing they were being chased too.
  10. Shawnhu, yes, I will have to shoot the arrow to be certain but carbon arrows are pretty tough.I didn't bother digging the broadhead out I assumed it was a goner and I was a bit disgusted with myself but on the bright side I was still glad I took the day off and went hunting.
  11. No, I watched the arrow sail over the deer .I unscrewed the arrow from the broadhead buried in the tree.I should have used my 20 pin and aimed lower because I was 18- 20 feet up.I had about 30 seconds to attempt a shot and I goofed on the pin.
  12. Look under the bowhunting harvest thread, pictures are there.
  13. I hope you recover soon from the huricane deerthug and everyone else affected by Sandy. My ex sister in law was named Sandy and I didn't like her either.Coincidence ?
  14. (Live from yesterday). Watched a 6 or 8 fifty yds away at 9:00 a.m freshen his scrape, thrash the branches and then stand on his back legs and rub higher branches. Tried using a bleat in heat but no luck. Then at 10 a.m. yesterday I heard a noise ,looked over my shoulder and here comes an old buck with a high upswept spike type rack with some kickers near the base-heading right toward me. I stood, knocked an arrow, attached the release and by this time I was looking at the top of the buck through the base of my treestand. He walked out in front of me and when he was about 15 yds. I made a noise with my voice and he stopped quarting away. I was at full draw and put the pin on the sweet spot and let the arrow fly.... Whack right in to a tree over his back. I put my 30 yard pin on him instead of my 20 yard pin. The buck took a couple of quick steps forward and looked around. I had no second chance as I watched him walk away. Yup, I suck.
  15. 3 1/2 hrs. this morning in a tree, saw nothing.Buddy 300 yds. from me saw nada as well.
  16. Nice job recovering that buck Truth2. Without asking too much were you on the East or West side of the park ?
  17. DLC Covert Scouting Cameras Albino bucks are not as rare as you would think. Photo is from WI where in most of the state they are illegal to shoot. This company posted the picture originally on it's website.picture is from Wisconsin.
  18. I read that too, nice to see a story about a big N.Y. deer and hunter in a national magazine, especially when it was not that far from home.
