2011 Fletch "the Nimrod Chronicles"
132 eight pointer replied to Fletch's topic in Member Hunting Journals
I don't blame you for shooting again, I would too. I didn't shoot again once and lost a big doe I hit low because it was so close and I was in a treestand and that was with a 12 ga..If I see the deer still standing I am still shooting.BTW Ithaca is a sweet shotgun. -
And it will go well with a little venison with Montreal steak seasoning.

Congratulations. Is that a 20 or 12 ga you use ? I am guessing 20 if she was still on her feet after the second shot. Either that or you have some thick skinned deer in your part of the state.Nice shooting to get 3 hits. -
At least they didn't wound the doe hopefully. I don't like hearing all that shooting let alone seeing it go on. Low chance of a clean kill, high chance of wounding and possibly unsafe.

Have a wonderful trip .

Fasteddie is that a kid's sled or something else you are using ? It looks sturdier than the one I have.

I never knew PA had nearly 2000 bears shot in one day or that so many reached 600 - 700 lbs. Wow and thanks for posting this.

Pressure cooking venison (canning)
132 eight pointer replied to Single_shot's topic in Game Recipes / Cooking
Did pressure canning yesterday . Borrowed a pressure canner and did a couple of qts.of venison to try it.I water bath canned vegetables last sept. so that gave me some experience with lids and jars.Found this very easy to do and will be easier next time. Now I am going to keep an eye out for a deal on a pressure canner. -
Never have and hope I never will.A second shot ends any suffering quickly.

Wear your fall restraint or hunt from the ground. Another example of it won't happen to me. This guy should of been with his family for many more years,I am sorry for their loss. -
Sniper's on letchworth state park????
132 eight pointer replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
Do you know any details about dmaps, are they available for the south end bowhunting area or the whole park ? -
My drag rope has a strap that goes over your shoulder and I bought a BIG carabiner/ handle like the kind used to carry paint cans and I use that as a handle on the rope/drag to give my body a rest or pull the deer up over logs or around trees easier.I usually have the rope around the front legs and neck to minimize snags.

You did the right thing.

Sniper's on letchworth state park????
132 eight pointer replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
It seems that opening the south end to bow hunting was too little too late. Implementing antler restrictions and doe only bowhunting in the previously off limits area at the south end, and then having pros shoot deer in that area to lower the deer population seems hasty at best.Yes it is better that the killed deer were donated to foodbanks but better management in the first place could have prevented a deer cull being necessary. A state owned park working in conjunction with the same state's agency that oversees deer management shouldn't be that difficult. The town of Webster has DMAPS from the DEC for use on the town property, bow only and the season is open from start of bow to the end of the late season as defined by the state.I am of the opinion that this deer shoot is a knee jerk reaction that is a direct result of New York State's inability in the past to manage the state budget. The park managers may very well be choosing the only option available to them. However paying people to shoot deer seems illogical to me as far as the budget is concerned.I will always have fond memories of Letchworth Park and hope I will have more in the future. I can only hope for the best. -
Had 3 doe lounging in my backyard last night. That = the most deer I have seen together at one time this season. They know they are safe.

WOW ! I would need a half hour to regain my composure after dropping that bad boy. I hunted Ontario county yesterday morning and this morning wish I had seen that..Some of those hills are quite steep ! I can see why he lived a while.
