  1. Doc that was fantastic! I couldn't have hoped for better info. I agree with you about getting up and finding the deer. I spent too much time stand hunting the last several seasons. Late last year I got out of a stand and slowly walked toward where I had watched deer moving earlier in the a.m. and I spotted a big doe looking at me from about 40 yds or so.I used a small tree as cover and made the shot count.I think you nailed it about deer sitting still and not being pushed and there seems to be more thickets that are tough to enter without being detected. I also enjoy looking down hillsides and benches for deer. I will see how things go with my nephew opening day, I am planning on taking him to Letchworth State Park, after that I will see about Stid Hill or possibly one of the other public areas in 8n. Glad to see you are back after those whitetails and good luck to you.I may have to print your mini-book to keep as reference.
  2. I thought the same thing but saw nothing this morning. I did take a little sneak and peak stroll and walked up on a turkey, at least I saw some wildlife.
  3. I won't be going until after opening weekend so that is good to know that the crowds thin out some. I wouldn't like every 100 yards that is scary.
  4. It was probably 8-10 years ago. I thought turkey hunting was allowed there still but I don't know.I know people used to park right in there and hunt the hills.
  5. Hmmm, I bought a shotgun and a muzzleloader and some of that unscented hunter's soap at Walmart ..... YUP I'm A Walmart hunter. Lesson of the week : When having a parade always carry an umbrella because someone will always try and pee on you from the rooftops.
  6. Wow I didn't know people ate chipmunks ! And I have another one that moved in to my siding, or there were two all along. If there is ever a nuclear holocaust roaches and chipmunks will be the only survivors. Maybe mosquitoes too.
  7. The judge failed you.Justice was mocked. The shooter is a coward. I don't know what I would have done in your shoes but it could have gotten ugly. You and your dad did what was right and the judge didn't.That is a terrible experience you had to witness. The guy who shot your dog needs a brain transplant and an ass kicking.Really sorry about your dog.
  8. There was a picture on this site before of a bobcat on a doe, a very alive standing up doe.It was a night picture if I remember correctly.
  9. Handsome buck there WesternNY, nice shot placement. BuckTheBuck315, a lot of people say smoke doesn't bother deer.Must be they don't recognize it as danger.
  10. I took a doe the first day out, have seen several doe but only a few bucks.Sat 11/5 I saw nothing from day break until 10 :15 and then a nice buck walked in by me. Unfortunately too far and of course he was heading away from me. Loved every minute I was out so far.
  11. I was waiting to see if Doc would let me in on a few hotspots !
  12. A couple guys I work with said HI-TOR was good hunting years ago, I also looked on-line at Bare Hill. The Dec "S.L.I.M " map is pretty cool to check state land out from the computer. I won't be going to 8N until after opening weekend so I may just have to wing it and learn from there.I like trying new places sometimes.
  13. I hunted turkey there with my cousin, I can still feel my heart pounding walking uphill.
  14. I was talking to 3 bowhunters last weekend, 2 were teasing the third guy because he won't walk in to the woods without a headlamp and a flashlight. The third guy told me he was walking in to his stand once and a bird possibly an owl flew right in to his chest. He said he screamed, threw his bow and never walked in without lights again.
  15. I will say 5 that I can remember but there could be 1 or 2 more. That would be in the last 20 yrs.
  16. Traditional bowhunter strikes again ! Nice goin biggamefish.
  17. I am interested in advice on the public hunting lands in WMU 8N. After opening day of sz firearms season I am looking to take my 15 y.o. nephew hunting in 8n due to the fact that I have a couple DMP'S for that unit. I have contacted the DEC already and have maps for Stid hill,Honeoye inlet and Hi-tor. I am also looking for other areas on-line. We would be ground hunting only .SAFETY is my primary goal . If anyone is willing to share experiences / opinions I would be much obliged. If you were taking a kid hunting in 8N where might you go ?
  18. I have taken at least 15 deer from state land. Some were very big doe, a couple 8 pts. and my very first deer was a 4 pt. from state land.I try to get away from other hunters by parking where there are no vehicles.I also would sit all morning or afternoon but I took a few walking slowly, one buck I shot as he was bedded on a shelf below me, he was watching the wrong way. There are plenty of deer on the state land here in western N.Y. and I imagine elsewhere too. After opening day the crowds thin out and late season you may not see many hunters at all.Good luck.
  19. If you look close you can see the tag zip tied to the ear.Tag went on as soon as I got to my car.I just wanted to show that some pictures do have tags on the deer.
  20. There must have been people hunting with him.Honestly I would rather go like that then unconscious and starving to death for a week like some people in facilities do.Still out there at 84 yrs. old, that is remarkable.
  21. Gorgeous pictures. That must be quite an experience.
