Why there's no dove hunting season in NY
132 eight pointer replied to Elmo's topic in General Hunting
I watch doves at my bird feeder and have thought they might be fun to hunt. They do look comical when the walk on the ground with there funny stride and head bob but they sure can get airborne quick. Why are they protected here ? I have had as many as 8 at my feeder. -
Bullzeye Archery Family Fun Day

Cool,I didn't know about this store. -
I have shot two deer with 12 ga buckhammers. A buck at ten yards, he ran about 30 yds before crashing into a tree dead. And a doe at about 30 yds. she ran forward, stopped and was looking around not knowing that she was even hit apparently. She moved forward a little and fell over. Both shots were through the vitals. The 12 ga buckhammers are pretty flat faced which creates a large entrance hole. Both of these shots were close so I don't know what downrange results would be like. This is a picture of the entrance side of the buck.

There is also a small museum there that has Native American artifacts and an old mastodon skull too.

My only question would be does the landowner allow hunting on his farm in the fall to enough people to try and control the deer? Or does the situation require more permits to bring the deer numbers down hence the nuisance permits. As long as the deer doesn't go to waste I say do what you gotta do.I am glad I don't have to make that decision,I would be on the fence like you.I probably would help him out. Nice that he has a positive opinion of your ability to get the job done.

Erussel, just remember- the litterers are slobs and you are a good man for picking up the garbage. It shouldn't be that way but such is life. -

Rubber Boots
132 eight pointer replied to erussell's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I am not an expert but the soap you are washing the boots with may be drying them out.I have an inexpensive pair of 400 gram Guide gear boots from the Sportsman's Guide I have used deer and turkey season for three years now and I am satisfied with them.I paid $38 with shipping for them.I know of others that paid more and ended up with leaks or punctures in the more expensive boots. -
Good luck Wooly! My only suggestion is try chewing gum when you get a craving. Lame but worth a try.

That sounds logical.I will have to pay more attention to size although it is sometimes difficult to judge if the animal is bloated.I too have noticed deer carcasses left to decompose, the only benefit of that might possibly be more acceptance of hunting by society.

Congratulations.

What is it with Memorial Day weekend and Deer roadkill. I have noticed for years the increased deer kill along the highways around Rochester. Is it due to increased traffic ? Fawns being born ? Deer moving to new areas for the summer ?

My flag is flying .Happy Memorial Day and thank you veterans. Bless my cousin's son serving in Afghanistan

Unexpected pleasant surprises are always nice.

I made a wrong turn last Sun morning and there starting to cross the road were a fawn and mother.I had no problem seeing them and because I was off the beaten path there was no traffic so all was well.

almost all school budgets go thru?? Big Rant!
132 eight pointer replied to sits in trees's topic in General Chit Chat
How many teaching jobs really need a 5-6 year degree ? Where did that requirement come from ? And why did I have to correct my kids homework and explain to them what they did wrong, isn't that the teachers job? Not all difficult jobs require a 5-6 year degree. Years of experience on the job is just as valuable as having completed a college degree program yet the compensation is not there for many taxpayers that expected to dig deeper and deeper in New York.Give the teachers a raise if it is justified but don't rebuild the sports facilities and put in stadium seating if it means a tax increase. -

I voted no on the school budget where I live yesterday, it passed . Property taxes are going up 1/2 to 1 1/2 percent here , meanwhile the new artificial turf football field is being built at one of the high schools.Education is important but enough is enough. Also give me a break about teachers having a difficult job, many jobs are difficult and the compensation is much much lower and the days worked are much more. -
That's funny, I cut that out of the D & C this morning at work.
