  1. The general rule is "4 of clear ice for one person walking. I prefer at least 6
  2. I doubt that.Ya gotta give credit where it's due. You can't blame folks for being opinionated or even downright defensive when it comes to a sport that we all love. I think squabbling amongst each other brings to light many points/views which may otherwise be overlooked. Most adults on the site can understand the value in a good debate. How boring would it be if we all were pushover pantywaists who agree with everything/everyone? I also doubt that physical confrontation would ensue because the internet tough guys would most likely shake like a dog sh#tting burdocks if they were confronted!
  3. I'm gonna guess you either caught someone's dogs which enraged them or you're just dealing with the normal low life. I've had traps/critters stolen by both. The dog runners who stole my traps (twice)were actually trespassing. I booted them a few times, but then traps started getting stolen and box blinds were getting shot with slugs. After that we started introducing them to the county sheriff. Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  4. Neither. You'll want to pick up one of those Mossy oaksSent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  5. WTF is an international course? Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  6. The online courses are only half online. The other half of the course is the traditional group style. I helped a buddy get his a couple years ago. The online part is more of a studying tool to prepare for the test/course. I actually got recruited to help in the field course. Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  7. All my calling up until a year ago was done alone with mouth calls. I've always done good on fox, but yotes are tough. Hunting alone with mouth calls is tough when you have to man the lights, calls and gun. They're also coming in looking at you so keeping the light on them is crucial. They almost always get downwind of the call too so more often than not they will wind you long before they even get in sight let alone into gun range. This is why I say that beating them at their own game is such a great accomplishment that any hunter should be proud of. My stance on running them with dogs is based on the fact that I personally could not be proud of killing them in that manner. Respecting our quarry is what sets hunters and killers apart. Since getting my FOXPRO last January I've only been out a few times due to family obligations, work and deer hunting, but I'm all set to get back into it so don't you fret because I'm about to start putting holes between eyeballs!
  8. Night hunting in the woods is tough when you're using lights to scan. I find the lights shine off the trees too much. One of the biggest problems with hunting during a full moon is the fact that they can see you better. You need to scan constantly so you can pick up their eyes before they see you and all that scanning means you need to move more giving them more chance to see you. It's a vicious circle. Yes you can have success during a full moon, but once you start educating coyotes they get smarter and increasingly harder to hunt. Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  9. Yes fox will be a bit more haphazard because they are not the top predator and they almost need to take a free meal when it's available. Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  10. Full moons are terrible for night hunting. You're better off playing golf than calling k9s. You will hear them, but they will seldom come out in the open. Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  11. Tioga, PA has a canned hunt if you're into that sort of thing Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  12. Nighttime. They were in the field when I got there. With no time to set up I simply lip squeaked and the 4 of them came in 400yds on a string. I laid this big male flat at 30yds with a.22Mag 45gr JHP. Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  13. Let me clarify. IMO not all hunting behind hounds is unsportsmanlike, such as rabbits and coons and that is because 1 set of hounds is trailing those animals. Therefore, if those hounds cannot match wits or keep up then the hunted animal stands a "fair" chance. Now when you start literally running animals to complete exhaustion then yes I call that 100% unsportsmanlike and no that is not hunting. Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  14. Wishing everyone here a very Merry Christmas Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  15. Then we come upon the difference between coyotes and bear, cats, coons, etc. and that is the fact that coyotes can't climb trees to escape their chasers and yotes generally don't have dens. Even if they did have dens, their home range is 10 sq. miles so they probably wouldn't make it there anyway Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  16. Again, it is clear to understand that you have more on the line than most other hunters when it comes to depredation of your herd. In most cases I think the houndsmen are not hunters at all, especially when their dogs are free to run across any parcel of property that they want. Some of us enjoy "hunting the hunters" and take it just as seriously as deer hunting. It is a very fulfilling accomplishment to take a predator at it's own game. So to hear of these houndsmen who don't have the gumption to play fair and kneel down in a field @ 1Am and try out their patience and shooting ability on a hungry adversary, I can't think of much more of a disrespect to wildlife. As a matter of fact, I challenge any hunter on this site to explain why he/she thinks that running any animal to complete exhaustion with multiple rotations of fresh dogs is in fact hunting. Tag soup

Well it's official, I'm eating tag soup for the first time in 19 years. Im usually the guy who ends up giving away meat. I'm not sweating it though, I was able to enjoy some time in the woods. Now it's on to predator hunting!!! Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  18. I'll be returning to Canandaigua from Boston on the 29th and I'll be visiting family in Johnson City/Endicott on the way. We come right through Owego. If this helps, let me know.Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  19. Night Owl makes some great lures/baits. They are located in NYS. Please do not place traps close to bait piles without covering the bait so that it's not visible from above. Otherwise it's illegal and you risk catching raptors. I like a good flat set or a scent post. Good luck and anchor that trap well Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  20. Just curious how many yotes you take annually and by which method. Also, how much land are we talking about? I fear you may be pushing a lot of them to neighboring properties just like the deer that get pushed off state lands, they just go as far as they need to find safety. IMO hunting coyotes with dogs is not hunting. Tracking dogs with GPS collars and laptops is one thing, but putting fresh dogs on the trail halfway through the chase is not very "fair chase". Of course the coyote won't be able to outrun 2 or 3 sets of fresh dogs. Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  21. Or you can put a bird feeder outside the barn and plink them off the feeder Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  22. Well first off you'll need to let us know if you're in the northern or southern zone because in the northern zone you can't use bait or lure with bodygrip traps after December 10th. Then make sure you have a trapping license. Squirrels are creatures of habit, if you can locate their entry then you can box it off to "funnel" them into a trap. Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  23. Bingo!Just more proof that a year round yote season does doodly-squat for population control. You think deer can pattern hunters? Coyotes will learn to expect you. Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
  24. Hoping something makes a dire mistake and pops outta the swamp! Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk
