  1. Coyote and for dinner I ate his liver with fava beans
  2. 12gaSent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  3. Here's one of mine on opening day of gun season 2013 This pic was taken approximately 45 minutes after sunrise and I was home eating backstrap by 8:30-9:00
  4. NYtrappers is pretty good. Another good one is TrapperMan Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  5. Ultimately, that is a call you need to make for yourself. I once shot a coyote at first light on opening morning, 45 minutes later I shot a 7pt. The point I'm trying to make and the one I believe G-man was eluding to is that if you shoot a doe that doesn't mean a big buck won't come through too. Personally, nothing tastes better than a nice plump doe!
  6. I've been down the shockwave road and ditched them for the Hornady Monoflex. I will not shoot anything else now. I filled 3 DMP's in one day last year with them. Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  7. If it were only that easy???? Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  8. You're correct, there is no regulation. 25ft is just a general rule of thumb if you're not covering the carcass/gut pile. Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  9. I found one chicken back in early summer. Delicious! Unfortunately, I missed out on an awesome year for chants. Next up will be hen of the woods Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  10. Be careful setting too close to a carcass/gut pile, or any other exposed fur or meat. Traps can't be set within something like 25ft. This is so you don't catch birds that come in to feed. You can make blind sets on the trails leading to the pile. Waxing isn't really needed for water traps, it is mostly to prevent k9s(Fox & yotes) from smelling human scent and the smell of metal. 11. Buying pre waxed would be senseless since the traps would be contaminated with human scent. Once you boil & dye them once to remove oils from the factory, you may be able to get away with just boiling after that. Some trappers don't do anything special and catch plenty of fur. I use red sumac pods for dye.
  12. It is no news that crossbows aren't the superior weapon. Crossbows generally have a shorter powerstroke than a compound; hence the reason for a 125-225lb draw weight oppose to a 70lb compound. Now do these hefty draw weights mean that a crossbow has a longer effective range than a compound? Negatory. Ya see, shorter bolts need longer offset or helical vanes to be able to stabilize the bolt. Longer vanes equal more drag so there goes your laser trajectory. Lets not forget to mention the need for crossbows to be drawn perfectly straight to ensure accuracy and that a string variance of 1/4 inch on either side of the triggers string latch can cause the bolt to shoot off center by 4 inches at 20 yds. ..and what is your hang up on does being hard to kill? Do you realize how many doe(out of groups of 5/6 mind you) that I could kill every season? I'm starting to believe that you've never sat in a treestand and if I'm right, may I suggest you sit in an oak tree loaded with acorns. I hear the deer love em!
  13. When stoneam2006 mentioned dogless, he was referring to a type of trap; it has nothing to do with K9 proofing. I set pan tension by feel, but 2lbs is a good starting point. Trap bed antifreeze can come in many forms from table salt, calcium chloride, propylene glycol, waxed dirt, vermiculite, peat moss, etc. I've even heard of folks using antifreeze that you put in RV's and vacant homes to keep water lines from freezing. What type of cover/terrain will you be trapping?
  14. Can totally see some air guitar goin on out there[emoji12] Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  15. First deer was with a High Country Sniper compound bow. First gun deer was with a .12ga Marlin model 55 bolt action. I've taken many deer with that gun and got so proficient with it that I could shoot double skeet with it Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  16. The less time spent at a set coupled with less scent left behind will only be to your benefit. If you have a few spots nailed down already then by all means I recommend installing some earth anchors now. You could even leave a few Ziploc bags of dry/sifted dirt nearby so you'll have it when you go to make your set. This early prep will save you from carrying it all in your basket on opening day. 17. I just upgraded my bow & accessories. All I need is broadheads and some new camo. My new FoxPro will come in handy too Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  18. The deer won't just up and leave good habitat and food source, but will shift movement patterns and/or go nocturnal. Hunting pressure alone can cause this and simply sitting in a tree doesn't guarantee you will see deer even in these" infested areas". While I'm stalking rainy day bucks in their beds at noon with my 3.2lb. compound , the crossbowists will be shivering in their stands and trying to muster the stamina to lug that 9-10lb. behemoth of a weapon around???? Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  19. Just a wild guess, but maybe he's implying that the orange army will take to the woods with this amazing weapon(crossbow) that can be mastered in a single afternoon and produce heartshots time after time.Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  20. Seems strange that you think a crossbow is more effective than a compound. The only thing a crossbow has over a compound is the ability to keep it cocked. A crossbow is not faster, does not put out as much kinetic energy, they're not more accurate, they're heavier and try pulling off a follow up shot within 30 seconds; not likely gonna happen.Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  21. Oh self righteous sinner, the path to salvation is one we all must open our hearts to on our own and it is often the road of sin that leads us there. If you've been groomed as a youngster to stay on the straight and narrow and never "lived a little" then of course you'll always look down on the good ol' boys and probably struggle in life because them good ol' boys would be the first ones to give you the shirt off their backs! Undoubtedly we all need Christ in our lives, but you must understand that everyone is equal in his eyes. Now with that out of the way, your theory IS flawed ; in part because bowhunters are some of the most dedicated, knowledgeable, and patient hunters out there. Also because of the fact that most bowhunters know that deer activity is usually slow until mid-late October when temps drop and rutting is ramping up. That being said, I and most other bowhunters will take our doe early in the season and do some in season scouting for the upcoming rut. My point is don't expect to have the woods all to yourself. To think so would be laughable. After all, NYS does have the most hunting pressure out of any other state in the country. Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  22. Yay! Congratulations Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  23. Sitting in your stand is the perfect time to play out all the possible scenarios in your head. A well placed tree stand should conceal you enough to draw while the deer passes by giving you a nice quartering away shot. All the planning in the world can't prepare you for every scenario, but just remain calm, breathe and use your judgment. Growalot brought up a good point about watching for other deer that you can't see. Deer are gonna bust you at some point, it's part of hunting. So have fun and learn from your mistakes Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  24. I have grown fond of the High Mountain brand dry rub. I normally find it at AGWAY. It lets you tweak the amount of saltiness/spiciness since you have to mix the seasonings & cure yourself . I cure my jerky in the fridge for 24 hours. Remember to slice the meat with the grain. Like t_barb said, just rotate the trays every so often and also leave the vents open Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
  25. Check Binghamton craigslist in September. Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk
