  1. Hello everyone I hunt in WMU's 8Y and 8W but this year drew for two extra DMP's in areas 8J and 7H, thinking there was state land there to hunt. Does anyone know of any farmers or people with a lot of doe that they would like taken off their property? I strictly bow hunt so there would be no firearms involved with the hunting. I am looking to give the deer to family and close friends and fill my freezer as well. If anyone knows any information as to who I could contact to ask for permission or if anyone knows someone willing to let others hunt please send me a personal message. I know this is a super stretch out there but I figured I'd ask and give it a try.

  2. Oh damn do all the kits require such extreme woodworking skills?

  3. yep, that's a good middle of the road general use set up, I think you will really enjoy it!

Can't wait to get it all finished and in the woods here in a couple weeks!

  4. congrats.

whose kit?   and rifle or smoothbore?

Thank you! And I got the traditions Frontier rifle kit 1:48 twist. From the research I've been doing it's good for both round balls and conicals.

  5. Projectile selection for your flintlock will be determined by the rifling twist rate of your barrel. There is a general rule that applies fairly well, fast twist rates would be something like 1 in 25 and they are best when it comes firing a bullet in a sabot or a power belt. There are medium twist rate that are like in the 1 in 40 range that are supposed to fire both bullets and round balls with decent accuracy. A slow twist rate like a 1in 60 is best for patched round balls.
The round ball weight is going to be determined by the caliber, for instance I have a couple of 45 calibers and the round balls will all be around 127 grs. When firing bullets there will be a wide variety and selection of weights available and the shapes can vary a lot. The manufacturer of your rifle should provide you with some kind of a starting point when it comes to what is preferable for your particular rifle when it comes to bullet type and some loading data. I would start with that and experiment and fine tune from there.
As for powder the choices are again wide but most folks firing a traditional sidelock will be using plain black powder or pyrodex. 45 cal and below most use fff burn rate with 50 cal and above using ff.
ThIs is just touching on the subject lightly, books are written on choices and combos which can be pretty big but it makes things fun, good luck to you and your flintlock project.

  6. Just recently purchased a flintlock build kit to pass a little time. I'd really like to get it in the woods during rifle and muzzleloader season. I'm just not sure what weight bullet or ball I should use with the powder charge. I will be using 85gr of 2F powder. What would be a good projectile weight that will kill a deer. I don't really want to make shots over 100 yards, not because I am in able to shoot over that distance I just don't want to end up wounding an animal.

  7. With the specific intention of killing a bear I would use a fixed blade head. Probably a cut on contact head like a Magnus Stinger. Less things to go wrong, as far as broadhead malfunction, tough shot angles etc.

My only direct experience personally for the one bear I killed with a bow is with a Rocket Steel head mechanical. I wasn't hunting for bears specifically at the time. It was a 225 pound sow and she expired in about 40 yards.

Makes sense on why to make the switch to a fixed head. But I'm just worried about an accidental bad or marginal shot, they don't have that big cutting diameter like mechanicals do

  8. watch some u tube videos rage heads kill bears and leave a heck of a blood trail

I've seen a bunch of them but then I've seen a few videos where guys talk about how 20 percent of the time they don't work and a black bears wound will gunk up with hair and fat and then you'll lose the bear. I don't know I'm probably way over thinking this

  9. A lot depends on the poundage of your bow and the weight of your arrows.

If you are generating enough kinetic energy, it won't matter as long as you place the arrow correctly. That being said, if you start looking for a fixed blade, check out the QAD Exodus.

i have personally never shot a bear with a bow but i know that they are extremely tough animals and i would not trust anything but a fixed blade, i shoot G5 Montec and they fly very well out to 45 yards. Also check out slick tricks, ulmer edge (apparently the best mechanical), muzzy trocars.

I know someone who took a nice beat with a muzzy mx3 this year, straight through

I've used Magnus buzz cuts for boar many times. Nasty broadhead that is capable of breaking bone. Might want to take a look at them. Good luck with the hunt.

I shoot a 70 pound bow with 29 inch draw so there's plenty of energy either way. But I might have to take a look at the QAD Exodus or slick tricks...all the reviews I've read on them say they do more then get the job done.

  10. Going on a bear hunt in Maine in the beginning of September but I'm a little skeptical on the broad heads I currently shoot. I've heard that expandable heads don't work to well on bear but then I've heard they work fine. Should I make the switch to fixed or will shooting a mech not make a difference?
