No. Though I would like to know what you think of the motorcyclists that don't wear helmets in states where they are not required, like in Connecticut. I always think, "Damn fool". But maybe that is because I smashed the back of my head on the pavement when I was cut off by a motorist that "did not see me". I might not be alive if it were not for my helmet. Was the accident my fault? No. By the way. Camo is made up of small irregular patterns. And motorcycles are comprised of small irregularly shaped parts. That is the reason why other motorists "did not see" the motorcycle they cut off or hit.

And his right to walk freely amongst the rest of us. (Jail time.)

Learning from what went wrong here, I will bring my orange vest with me when retrieving a deer on public land. My question is, should I put in on me or the dead deer or get a second one for both of us?

In your example the check station sunrise posting is the one I would go by since I assume that is how the regulation is going to be enforced. If the check station sunset time was 10 minutes earlier than GPS time, I may stay put until GPS sunset as a courtesy or for my safety and not hunt those last 10 minutes. That seems like use of common sense to me. Like I said earlier, I would understand the discrepancy and plan accordingly.
-
Nor am I. But I would rather know what the discrepancy is and plan accordingly. I may choose to say put for a few extra minutes after sundown as a courtesy or for safety if there is a chance that nearby hunters may be using a slightly different time.
-
The app on my phone shows sunrise 3 minutes earlier and sunset 3 minutes later for today compared to the chart. My location is right on one of the lines on the map. For sunrise I can wait the extra 3 minutes after the alarm goes off, but for sunset I rely on the alarm in the app to tell me when it is quitting time. I hope that does not get me in trouble one of these days. Guys using apps may want to compare your app to the chart.

New hunting seat

I just ordered one. -
I think another factor to consider before taking that early or late shot is the expectations of others who maybe in your vicinity unknown to you after sundown and the risks to their safety.
-
I faced this dilemma tonight. I have a sunrise/sunset app on my phone. An alarm goes off based on my gps location so I don't have any excuse for not knowing the exact time. The sunset alarm goes off. I was ground hunting so I start walking out within minutes. I come across a small doe, so we start to play hide and seek for the fun of it and to see what kinds of sounds and movements I can get away with before spooking her. I play with her for 5 to 10 minutes. I am not moving. She comes within 10 yards. I shuffle my feet, I nock an arrow. I mock draw on the bow. I never shot. So my delemma is that I am part of a deer mgmt program targeting does. Last year federal sharpshooters were taking over bait at night with silencers in this town. I had the safe opportunity to take a doe within minutes of sunset to help meet the objectives of the program. If another hunter was not in the woods with me, I might have shot. Or I might not have. It was a tough call. I do not know if I will make the same decision next time to be honest about it. It seemed foolish to pass up on a chance to reduce the deer population by one more.

Question about traveling with hunting riffle overseas
incognito replied to lastedtiger's topic in General Chit Chat
Yeah, I am quoting myself. I was wrong. It looks like New York City has a 24 hour exemption from prosecution for possession of assault rifles in transit despite the SAFE Act. I don't know if other counties in NY have the same exemption. Watch how you travel into NYC from out of state.I don't know how NYC can be more lenient than New York State. I did not look into large capacity magazines. I ran out of energy looking for the handgun possession exclusion (same findings as the NRA website), but I did find the laws regarding rifles; shotguns; and, to my suprise; assault weapons. I guess we need to rely on FOPA for handgun transportation. I did call the Port Authority Police. The 24 hour rule was confirmed without a distinction for handguns but I did not get a real warm fuzzy feeling that I had the expert on the line. He could not point me to any Port Authority literature or web pages for support. He warned against bringing in an AR-15 when I pushed him on it but he had no issue with hunting rifles. He referred me to the NY Penal Code. Excerpts from the NRA website at http://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/state-laws/new-york-city.aspx HANDGUNS—PURCHASE AND POSSESSION A license is required to possess a handgun for any purpose. HANDGUNS—CARRYING The license to possess a handgun is a license to carry unless restricted, but almost all licenses are restricted. If there are no restrictions the licensee may carry the handgun concealed on or about his person, loaded or unloaded. Handgun licenses issued elsewhere in New York State are not valid in New York City. New York City licenses are valid throughout New York State. However, a New York State license to carry or possess will be valid in New York City provided that the handguns are transported by the licensee in a locked container, and the trip through New York City is continuous and uninterrupted. RIFLES & SHOTGUNS—POSSESSION A permit issued by the Firearms Control Section of the Police Department’s License Division is required to possess a rifle or shotgun in New York City. Non-residents in transit who are carrying rifles and shotguns with them are exempt from the permit and registration requirements provided they remain in New York City for less than 24 hours and the rifles and shotguns are at all times unloaded and in a closed case, or in a locked automobile trunk. Question about traveling with hunting riffle overseas
incognito replied to lastedtiger's topic in General Chit Chat
I was not implying that you were trying to be anything other than fully above board. But I think you were mistakenly not in compliance with the SAFE act based on my assumption that you did not register the AR before you moved out of NY to PA. I would need to see that 24 hour rule in writing before I would risk the consequenses. -

I have never travelled with firearms like some others have. Nor am I a lawyer. However, I am confident that under no circumstances can you possess an Assault Rifle (as defined by the SAFE Act) that has not been registered in NY. If you did and got away with it, good for you. It may not turn out so well next time. Also, beware of the capacity of your magazines. -
Congratulations.

Congratulations, a trifecta!

Yes, on the north fork.An “Earn a Buck” program will be in effect for the 2014 season. In general, only antlerless deer may be harvested, except as provide below: No hunter shall harvest a buck on Town property before both DMP tags (tags issued through this office) are used and accounted for. The “Earn a Buck” program encourages the harvesting of does to help balance the deer population and helping correct the damage to our fragile ecosystem in the area.

10/29 I hunted/scouted three properties included in the Southold Deer Management Assistance Program (SDMAP): zone 4 of the Reeves property, zone 2 of the Damianos property and zone 5 of the Hoggs Neck properties. I set up at the Reeves property before sunrise just inside the south boundary of the zone right off route 25 and east of the salt marsh. No movement. At midday I headed to the Damianos property hoping to see if I could set up by a staging area next to a farm field for an afternoon hunt. A path leads to a 50 yard diameter clearing but it is not close enough to the field. I can't imagine how you would track a hit deer through the thick stuff surrounding the zone. I have been meaning to scout the Hoggs Neck Properties for a while now. Zone 5 is in a long narrow strip between parallel residential streets. I jumped two deer walking to the zone. Closer to sunset I had two almost opportunities. I don't know if I misplayed my chances or if they were just not meant to be. At least they got the adrenaline flowing.

10/28 Back in Greenport for an afternoon hunt from a ground blind. South wind, but light. Temperature about 9 degrees above normal. No movement.

I did not see the ten acre requirement in the document that was linked. I did however see a phone number that the OP can call to get all the information he needs.

Dicks in Commack sold out its supply in days. Campsite Sporting Goods in Huntington had plenty yesterday and will reorder as necessary. I spent all of last night learning about ticks on the Internet. VAbowhunter, Are you familiar with Lyme disease carried by Long Island ticks?
-
Did you look from a different perspective? Go to the last blood mark. Get down on all fours to look UNDER the thick stuff, not through it from 6' above. Ask yourself, "Where would I go if I wanted to hide?" You would probably take the path of least resistance into a thick spot. Edited for spelling
-
I am in 1C. You are a bit far from me.
-
I will lend a hand if you are anywhere near me. Where are you?

10/24 Winds died down finally. Some sun came shining through the clouds. I thought the weather would make 'em move, but I saw nothing all afternoon on village property. 10/27 In the woods just before sunrise for the first time on DEC land. Set up a ground blind and saw no movement. I decided to try to make them move after a few hours. Jumped one bigger doe and two smaller ones. I was too far away to know if the smaller ones were fawns or not. The good news is these were the first live deer I spotted on this particular property.

Town of Southold Deer Management Assistance Program allows taking of buck only after you take two does. Otherwise, I'm not going to pass up on one waiting for something better to come along. Maybe that will change after I get some signigficant hunting experience. So far I have had only one oppertunity for a responsible shot and I took it.
