Who's giving it a go this week and late season with bow or muzzleloader
Core replied to rob-c's topic in Deer Hunting
Is it decent? What are you seeing? Like I said, i see tons of sign now, even into gun season, but just no movement during the day. I have a cam up again from last weekend I'll check in a couple of days in a spot that I've seen tons of deer at (last year), so I am looking forward to seeing if the deer are in fact gone or I've just been extremely unlucky with my timing. I have thought of montezuma in the past because it's absolutely massive and it's a reasonable drive to me. But, i don't get the impression it's possible to drive there, park and you're up and at them; don't you have to check in, get a permit, etc. I checked maps, the northern howland part is too far for me, but the southern section is under an hour. The northern looks excellent on satellite. -
Well that explains the "injured" deer I was tracking a couple weeks back. I figured somebody had hit it because there was definitely some spotting.

My waterproof boots...aren't.

I found it confusing, too, looking at some boots recently without the gram weight, like 3.5mm or 5 mm of neoprene. -
Yeah the summit climber is certainly loud to hang. It's inevitable I clank it at some point. I admit to using it as a backpack frame as well, though; I can put it on my back (I did add molle straps and kidney belt), then my pack on the back of it. As for prototyping a packable ladder stand, it looks like that other company in my first link did it and brought it to market but it wasn't fantastic so it looks unavailable. Maybe one day somebody comes up with a 15 lb carbon fiber stand that basically rolls up!

Went back today. Will be interesting in the future to see if that first shot high is consistent. It didn't feel different pushing the bullet down. Exempting that first shot, the next two groups--even though different bullets--both were 3". Next time I'll also test down to 90 gr again. Interesting to me was the fact that the bullets hit the exact same vertical plane; after the first group of hornady I shifted the scope over 3 clicks, so I appear to be dialed in left/right whether I use the xtp hunter or the shockwaves. These seem to vary more vertically than horizontally, which would hint at inconsistent charges probably due to using pellets. Mid-shot cleaning was pouring water down the barrel and then 4-5 swabs. Not perfect but to remove the bulk of the gunk. If I owned a half dozen shotgun boresnakes and threw them in the washer after every trip it would make all this a lot easier!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I hunt state land in 8F and I've been striking out for two months now, except for the very first day of bow. I am extremely familiar with the Western most portion of the lake shore marshes, and even the section 10-12 east of that (another lake shore marsh section). I don't know where the deer are. I go deeper than virtually everyone else, but the deer just aren't showing up. I see tons and tons of tracks, and scrapes and scat but I'll be damned if these things are coming out during the day now. I can't even spook them from their bedding areas (assuming they are still there). There must be one bedding area somewhere off the land that has all the deer in a tiny little spot and they fan out at night. I know there are other 8F spots that may be better, I am not sure -
Wouldn't support it myself. I know some guys here have land with enough deer they can pick and choose from, but this year in the ~20 hunting trips I've gone on, I have had only one shot opportunity on a deer, and it was on a buck. The only other deer that came within range even once was also a buck (yearling).
-
@ the range I used water but the other night when I got home a good cleaning with Hoppes 9 (I've since bought the traditions foaming bore cleaner), but then I ran some hoppes oil down the bore followed by some dry patches. What is bad about the oil? Too much of it mess with the powder if it's left in the breech...?

I wondered what this thing looks like, though! I googled it and found a couple people selling them for $3,500. http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/8204090/Re_McWhorter_Custom_50Cal_XML_

Dang it, Biz-r-oworld!

No pictures. When I click on rifles I get this: Sounds expensive :D. But 1 MOA guaranteed to 500 yards with the muzzleloader and 1000 ft lbs at 600 yards sounds impressive!

I haven't followed this closely but I assumed obama would kowtow over any supposed victim group. -
Exactly. He said: This was his first post in the thread, so reasonable to assume he was speaking about the scenario outlined in the news article in the first post. Specifically, a hunter shoots a guy's dogs. Doewacker indicated in that circumstances he would have shot back at this guy and claimed it was self-defense.

My youngest told me a month back that she is never eating deer again and doesn't like it, but she does love venison. -
The only made up scenario is yours; there is a real one in the first post, as most of us realize when we actually opened the thread. The problem is you realize how "crazy fringe" it was when you said you'd shoot the hunter in the article if you were in that situation, yet you don't want to admit you misspoke so instead you dig your heels into your corner more and more. And this is what you "enjoy" doing. smh
-
Sounds to me like I caught you trying to move the goalpost. But I'm very good at catching that sort of thing.
-
Well in the actual scenario we had in the article I presume a guy walked up on his dogs that had just been shot and knew who shot them (without thinking the hunter was shooting at him). It wouldn't be reasonable to then start shooting back at the hunter.
-
I'm not a dog; you said you would shoot at somebody shooting your dog as it chases small game. Everyone has stories but nobody showed "full support" in this thread for shooting at this guy's dogs, even if they relayed stories about times when it was acceptable by some.
-
I assume Bear is the name of your dog. He sounds tough, but I was going to really give you applause if you had trained a bear for protection. If you google "pet hyena", some people in Africa actually have these as pets, though tellingly most of the pics show the thing muzzled.

At the least we should run it by the writers of SNL.
-
Who? Please say exactly who in this thread did that. In fact the craziest, fringe thing in this thread is this:

Yes I'll be out. I've been out more than two months now without a single shot chance at a deer, so I will keep plugging away stubbornly until I either get one or my time runs out. -
Finally got it out yesterday for 6 shots. Didn't bore-sight. First at 25 yards was off by 2 inch so I adjusted then moved out to 100. Shots 2,3 were 3" apart and 8" low so adjusted. Shots 4,5 were a bit high but only one inch from one another and 6 rounded that group out to 3-4" group size, all within 2" of the bullzeye. I'm satisfied with that for now because I'm shooting pellets, not perfectly measured powder and this was with hornady hollow point hunters, not the plastic tip bullets, so I would expect groups to be a bit bigger (I assume...). If pellets + hollowpoint can give me a 4" group at 100 I'm optimistic that using the polymer tip and/or polymer plus powder (if I can ever find any) would get me up to 2" groups. I was shooting 90 gr (going to move up to 120 next session to check accuracy) and found recoil to be extremely comfortable. Surprised how much fouling happens after each charge! I cleaned the barrel with water and ran a bunch of swabs through between each shot, not to have it shine but so most of the bunk was out. I didn't bother cleaning the breech plug between each shot. It still had a hole and the primers still kicked off the charge. Do you guys clean the breech plug between shots? I know the primer isn't providing any actual energy to the shot, but I could imagine that even if it still kicks off the explosion maybe it's a little less consistent if the primer hole is partially plugged (though I also imagine it would be so small an effect it's mostly irrelevant).

I just wish Trump was more sympathetic when he made his picks. He needs to immediately put together a team to interface with the editors at huffingtonpost and have them sign off on his cabinet picks. People who's titles include stuff like Cultural Sensitivity Advocate have some really great, helpful opinions and we would all benefit by listening to them.
