  1. I hunt in 8X, and 8Y every year for the majority of all deer seasons (around 20 days on stand). I can attest to the low numbers but in this area there are many many many more brown it's down hunters. I work in a school district with 300 students per a graduating class the students come in all the time bragging about their parents filling all their tags on any thing that walks fawns to mature bucks. THAT is the reason for low herd numbers not to mention the strong Amish presence. Many more Amish per a square mile than the Naples, High Torr, Bristol , Middlesex area. Winter kill offs have not been that bad down here in 8X or 8Y as you might not think there are still a large number of farming communities and there was little to no sign of dead deer from natural causes. I saw more dead deer at my parents area in 8F than I did down here in 8X and 8Y in the past 3 years. I have reviewed the maps before and have saw the state lands that have been logged but there is still lots of forage in the area with little competition because of the lower # of deer per sq. mile. Myself and 4 others hunt a 300 acre tract that has 6 deer on it, yes 6 in 8X. On that 300 acres it should be able to sustain a small herd of 10+ with the available resources, the owners ended up shooting 5 of the 6 deer (the last one left was a 60 lbs. button buck that I'm not sure how he made it through the gauntlet).
  2. Ok I wasn't sure the way you worded your post. It looked as tho you were talking about total points. Thanks for clearing that up. Culver creek mentioned the fact that the bill wouldn't keep all yearlings from being shot but the majority a 10 point yearling is definitely out of the ordinary and that animal had some great potential.
  3. Couldn't agree more it isn't the number of hunters but the number of hunters that will be replaced by the younger generation. Unfortunately the instant gratification thing doesn't work in the wild and that is a huge turn off for a lot of young people. Why not travel a little ways to an area that has DMP's and state land? If you are hunting with a bow you get an either sex tag that can be used for a doe. Also if you crossbow hunt you will get a antlerless tag. The only issues becomes when it is regular season. I think the system is flawed in terms of DMP they should only be for female deer. If you make the decision to shoot deer and ends up being a button buck so be it and you just ate your buck tag. This should also apply to spikes less than 3" if it has antlers it's a buck and with AR and you shoot it you should be fined. If that were the case I feel there would be a lot more people double checking their target before pulling the trigger or letting that arrow fly. With AR it might make people pay a little more attention and not shoot the first thing that walks out before sunrise knowing they might get a fine.
  4. Grow you realize it is 3 or 4 on one side not of total points? That would make the deer a 6 or 8 point. On our property generally speaking we have 2 1/2 year olds with 8 points and 1 1/2 year olds with 6 or less. From all the articles I have read over the years that seems to be the general consensus no matter where people hunt. The idea is to have an older herd with better age structure.
  5. I like to hunt out of ladders but like the flexability I can get from a hang on stand. Ladders seem a little more stabile, my wife can climb them a lot easier, and are quieter to get in and out. Most the areas I hunt I don't need to be more than 15' off the ground if I do I make an extension and the pattern of the deer doesn't change too much from year to year. I can leave them on my property without anyone messing around with them usually. O wait I forgot CHEAPER too.
  6. @growalot @stubby68 I'm calling both of you out on the post of the article and tell me if I'm wrong and why. If mandatory AR go through would you be the person the article talks about taking a 2.5 year old or would you hold out for a 3.5 year old that would likely be wandering the woods or even a 4.5 year old? Below is my take on the article. For those that didn't read the article that Grow has mentioned about 4 times, the article it highlights those hunters that took yearlings went to 2.5 year olds but one thing I don't like is it lacks any data from the states it mentions. Without the data (not talking statistics I want raw data) to back that those yearling hunters only killed 2.5 year old deer it is only an assumption and we all now what happens when we assume things. I think the article is well written and offers some great suggestions but I don't think it is really any different than what we have going on here more opinion based thinking. Take it for what it is worth but that article doesn't provide any proof that they don't work or that people just end up shooting 2.5 year olds vs the yearling. I think more bucks will start to make it through the seasons being after those 2.5 years they will be much smarter at avoiding hunters and become educated by scents, movement, ect. It might actually make people "hunt" instead of just standing on the side of a hedgerow and have people scare deer to them.
  7. Chas..... I don't know where you've been looking, but that's been happening throughout this entire tread. The difference is the ones you guys have posted up have been addressed and discussed. The ones opposite your views have been in large part ignored. My point was that you and others can post articles stating it doesn't work and others and myself can post articles that say it does. Statistics can be skewed to favor one side or the other. We all saw this in the past presidential election. Many of you are advocating against them for reasons you say many of us advocating for them. For example selfishness. I'm selfish because I want more mature deer harvested you and others are selfish because they want to shoot deer so the neighbor doesn't because you want to "fill your freezer" Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  8. I can do that too, http://www.pgc.pa.gov/Wildlife/WildlifeSpecies/White-tailedDeer/Pages/AntlerRestrictionsAreTheyWorking.aspx Here is one too, and this one is from NYS DEC, http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/93857.html Both articles state it is working, but if you want to pick and choose what what articles you want to use as facts we all can do that.
  9. Nope saying a mature deer will weigh more than a yearling in the same area. Meaning you will get more meat out of that mature deer than a yearling.
  10. Won't last as long and would need a lot more smaller limbs. Do what you want kill all the deer on your property for all care just don't complain you don't see any. Better yet with your logic take a sledge into the woods and shoot those bucks and break the antlers off so you can use that DMP on them and save that antler tag for that "Big one" you have been seeing on the camera.
  11. But I didn't ask about tasting and chewing on wood. So how old is this limb wood?
  12. It was an analogy on the amount of heat to the amount of meat. The more mature the tree the more heat you will get from that one tree the more mature the deer the more meat you will get.
  13. How many people heat with firewood or just use it for ambiance? How about those that like to have camp fires? Would those of you that enjoy a nice fire go out and trim a bunch of small branches to feed your fire place/ wood stove or harvest a log and split it into manageable pieces? I don't know a single person that would do the fore mentioned, the same principles apply.
  14. Not really, unless you haven't already been practicing selective harvesting.
  15. The media, they are the ones that ran with the story with ZERO proof, none, nada, zilch. It is sad that this even made it to the news stand. There has been no proof and the media is still talking about it. Nothing like reporting fake news to get your ratings. Pretty sad that we can't watch/listen to the places we all used to get our information because it has been twisted so much from the truth.
  16. My family has had 2 one 30hp and now our bigger 55hp. Love both, the smaller one went through tie rods but we used it as a bigger tractor as we only had 1 bucket tractor at the time.
  17. I got my apple, and pear trees through chemung co. soil and water district. I also bought some raspberry, Concord and Niagara grapes. Good prices on them. They had all sorts of different trees from oaks to maples, and ornamental shrubs.
  18. I heard a bunch of turkeys gobbling 2 mornings ago. Right about sunrise on the other side of the valley. Sent some chills down my neck.
  19. Yeah that is pretty ridiculous.
  20. Bred fawns all depends on the area and if they are of weight, in NY I'm sure there are exceptions but again that is that 10%. Darken hocks don't always refer to breeding or have been bred. Usually the hocks are always discolored from the rest of the animal. Being that the button buck in the background has them too makes me think they are just discolored not for any rhyme or reason. I have had photos of deer both doe and bucks that are 2.5 years old with dark hocks in July. That doesn't mean he is breeding doe in July. Link provided describes breeding of fawns. https://www.qdma.com/doe-fawns-breed-good-sign/ We are skewing a little from the original post but for all arguments sake you can age a doe up to maturity and after that there is no real way to tell what age she is until you kill her and have her teeth aged. Bucks mature differently than doe so it is easier for people to tell their age, like you mentioned yourself there are biologists that take measurements from the facial structure to help age the deer other than its teeth.
  21. Good point not sure where it was but I read that 90% of all doe are bred in the 1st rut meaning that if you had a herd with 20 doe out of those 20 only 2 would be bred late the chances of that happening are slim. But the doe pictured and the button buck are of the same age, both likely to be yearlings (2016 years offspring) and I would bet siblings being that they were the only 2 together pictured. Usually twins will split up after their first year. Now I don't have proof about that last part just first hand experience. EDIT: And yes doe can have dark hocks, the doe I shot during regular season had dark hocks and smelled just as bad as bucks I have shot in the past.
  22. Personally I would say young doe being that she should be getting close to show the pregnant belly. I have had doe on camera at the end of March that are beginning to show pregnancy wise. This doe is obviously young and was not bred this year. The one behind it looks to be of the same size just further from the camera.
  23. That is exactly what needs to happen, If you want our services they don't come cheap or free like in the past. Hold people accountable is what this presidency seems to be about and the way it should've been from the beginning.
  24. Problem are the bases around North Korea that they can hit no problem. The issue isn't about him hitting the USA but the US sites around North Korea.
  25. I will be using an old drag behind my 4 wheeler it doesn't give you the flattest ground but works up the ground enough. I want to get a 3 bottom plow, 50hp tractor and a big disc but I have to settle with the wheeler for now.
