I understand your argument but still charging even more for a hunting license will turn off even more people. They are already outrageous. If you were to adapt the earn a buck like other states there would be checkpoints setup in every county. In NY there 62 counties. We have maybe 20 CO agents for the entire state and they are still reducing that number. Also there are many places that have low numbers of deer (not according to DEC there is only overpopulation) and this would cause even less. AR wouldn't cost anyone anymore money nor would it force a person to take 2 deer when they only need 1. I could see a lot of deer going to waste because of those that don't want/need that much meat. Yes they could donate the deer but there aren't many shops that participate in the donation program. You and me both. I argee Doc is spot on!

Earn a buck program only works if you have the man power which DEC does not have. Add antler restrictions which would work the same way causing a person to take a doe instead of that spike chasing a non hot doe. They're would be no need for checks and would please majority of people except those that like to shoot 1.5 year old deer.

haha that was too funny.

was the meat warm or cold to touch? I would smell it. I had several instances where my wife didn't shut our upright freezer door enough and we had thawed meat in the door. I pulled a package out for dinner, when I prepared it I smelled it and did the old taste test after cooking it. It was fine, but when I pulled it from the freezer it was still cool to the touch. You can thaw meat in a fridge then re-freeze as long as it doesn't get warm, I have done this with venison I was going to grind later in the season when I get another deer.

I agree last winter definitely made a huge impact in the population a lot more than a DEC and other organizations are taking into account. I saw a lot of deer during the 3rd and 4th week of bow but after that I was lucky to see 3 or 4 every sit. Normally I would need to use 2 hands to count the deer I see during the season on 1 sit.

Maybe grow was a few in when she typed it...sometimes I have text messages like that after a few cold ones.

So may be over thinking but gonna ask.

Barrels are designed (supposed to be) to expand and contract uniformly. The barrels that have less effect are fluted and bull barrels. Flutes are supposed to allow faster cooling with more surface area compared to solid barrel and bull barrel is supposed too hold shape and tolerances better. With all that said, I target my rifles in with cold or cool barrels in the fall. I did it during the summer once buteven tho it was warmer I never had the gun shoot differently. -
Only pic I have from this year but it did what it was supposed to do. Ultimate steel Rocket 75gr. 1" cutting diameter fixed, you can see the hole behind the lungs exited behind opposite shoulder. He piled 80 yards from where he was shot and within 10 seconds. I watched him fall pretty it was cool watching him skid to a pile. Here is a photo of what they did 3 years ago. Entrance in front of left rear hip: Exit behind right front shoulder:

Nice buck! You doing a score guess now? I am guessing 142" but definitely could be bigger tough to tell without something to gauge against the rack.

2015 HuntingNY Gun Harvest Thread
chas0218 replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Managed a nice 10 point in 8F this season. Measured out at 135" with 5" bases, think red bull can... Not my biggest but a wall hanger. Story: I got to my parking location with all intentions of hunting one of my other stand sets for the wind we had (South/Southeast) but really wanted to check my camera card. So I decided I would take a look at the camera card and if something happened to come in at this stand in the usual place I would still be able to shoot it. So being hopeful and talking myself into this stand I made the noisy trek across a plowed field (heavy frost and frozen top layer of mud). As I walked I could hear the woods moving and starting to wake up but still too dark to see past 5', I also used my grunt call and lightly grunted as I walked across the field. I got to my camera 10' from the bottom of my tree stand and heard a branch break and what sounded like a deer grunt but dismissed it as a squirrel. I quietly got my card out and replaced with a blank and heard another branch break and another grunt. This time a little louder and deep. I moved as shiftly as possible without making a sound to the bottom of the tree and slowly and quietly ascended the tree. It wasn't 20 minutes and series of light grunts until 2 shadows made their way into the plowed field at this point I could tell the first deer was either a fawn followed by a big doe or a doe followed by a big buck either way I could only make out the bodies. Once it started to get a little lighter ~ 10minutes I could make out the deer and to my surprise it was one of the "hit list" bucks. I pulled up the rifle clicked off the safety and rested the cross hairs on the top of his back. I knew at 100 and 200 yards my gun shoots dead on so this 160 yard shot was a chip shot for the old .270 win. The deer was straight away ready to step back into the thick brush when I pulled the trigger. After the shot I looked for him in my scope and with my binoculars but could not find him. I decided to wait for my nerves to settle down before I climbed down. As I walked across the field I was replaying the shot over and over thinking how did I miss. I get to where I thought I shot looking around for blood. As I looked to my left I could see him laying just inside the weeds. He must have jumped and landed just out of sight from my stand. To say the least he is one of the nicest deer I have shot in a while, he might not be the biggest but definitely a trophy. I had spent countless hours hunting this deer during bow season but had not been around until the wed. before thanksgiving.- 43 replies

I agree with you to a point I have seen some serious junk as older rifles WWII era or older. You can talk to old Vets and they will tell you it was a crap shoot as to who got a reliable gun. Yes with today's technology you can replace those parts and have a heck of a gun but as they were from the factory many were junk. Unfortunately the nicest guns I own aren't made in the US. I have some others but my CZ, Tikka, Glock are buy far the best craftsmanship I have seen in a while in new guns. Smith & Wesson still know what they are doing (newest pistol) but not many US manufacturers.

The worst part is that the el-cheapos last just as long as the name brand.

I have seen a muzzleloader hit 6" low from 35 yard sight in and a 100 yard shot. It was a 348gr. powerbelt with 100 grs of 777. so with that being said holding on dead kill (lungs) would allow that particular hunter and muzzleloader to completely miss the deer. I do have to ask why did you ask the question if you aren't concerned about it?

Got the squirrel taken care of, thanks everyone for your suggestions and help!

Describe the techniques you used to attract deer this 2015 season
chas0218 replied to Rockspek's topic in Deer Hunting
So this Buck came out chasing a doe not right on her but behind her. So the story goes like this (cliff note version at the bottom of post), I drove to our property parked next to the barn with all intentions of hunting in a different stand but wanted to grab my memory card and figure what the hey I have only sat there once. I washed my clothes about a week ago in some dead down wind but had worn them about 3 times since then sweating and what not, but I kept them in a plastic garbage bag until I wore them in the car to my hunting spot. So I would imagine they smelled like new car scent (air freshener of choice). Wind downwind of him and the doe so I don't know if the washing or new car scent helped. Unfortunately the plowed field was LOUD being the top layer was frosted/frozen making a lot of noise but taking my time. I figured why not and used my True talker grunt tube and lightly grunting as I walked across. I heard a twig break when I was getting my card out, I figured I just spooked something up our hill there goes any deer that were there. Then I heard a light grunt and another twig break. I skedaddled to my tree (10' away) and climbed into my stand. I tried grunting a few more times and got responses. Made the hair stand up on my neck when I heard this long low grunt. I sat there watching these 2 deer come into the field (too dark to see what they were other than deer). Finally the sun broke and I could make out the deer. This guy was one and the other a doe. I looked at my phone it was literally 1 minute before sunrise so I counted it down north dakota 1, north dakota 2.... and bang shot him dropped in his tracks. Cliff Note version: I put him at ease with my grunt tube (true talker) or pissed him off couldn't really tell. -
Welcome! Same reason I joined, other forums were much more hostile.

I would love to shoot them but I don't have a pellet gun...I know I know almost everyone has a pellet gun.

By the way my wmu is 8x sorry for the confusion.

I'll give it a shot I need this thing gone. It has ate thru 3 squash already and ruined a dozen apples. I hate those little tree rats. Can't believe it came in while I was cutting my deer up with music playing not to mention our 2 pointers.

Southern zone and have a trapping license. Steuben county 8F

You can make a whip out of scrotum parts. Not sure I would eat them. I have heard of Rocky Mountian oysters...But this isn't the Rocky Mountians.
