  1. lol actually around naples there should be more than a few you probably walk by more than you see. a very exciting bird to hunt when you do your home work and know hwere to find them.
  2. exciting is an understatement they were flushing everywhere and the dog was working really well.just need to hone up on our shooting a bit
  3. went down to stuben county with my dad uncle and my cocker spaniel over the weekend and put up 23 birds in 9 hours of hunting one bird in hand per gun was a very fun time.
  4. genesee county has a good number of deer as far as ratios i don't know i don't really care or use trial cams or cover scents or any other such things i just watch the areas i plan to hunt get to know the terrain and travel routes ect. and ussually see quite afew deer
  5. took 4 pt. opening day was a real trophy as me and my father both took bucks that sat. then had a really nice 10 pt let me get within 15yrds of him in a crp field then get up and walk broadside across said field stopping at about 80yrds before going into the hardwoods on thanksgiving. also took a doe last sat.
  6. have good results with lightfields myself have shot others with less than impressive results and they shoot well out of my gun. some say they are not good for long range but have dropped deer at 100 yrds with them and don't see a reason to shoot more than that with my shotgun anyways
  7. i have had good luck on state land and rarely see other hunters i also go in fairly deep but usually only see hunters on my way out. the key is getting to know the piece you choose to hunt. if you become familar with the land you will know where the average users will be and position yourself away from them. often the other hunters i do see tell me im nuts for going where i do but i am always comfortable and know my surroundings well.
  8. i think the younger the better was in the woods with my dad at 3 , so was my son this spring when i called in a tom and my daughter 6 but we didn't see any thing that morning. i don't take them on hunts that will not be interesting / enjoyable for them tough. ie. don't take my boy out too chase pheasnts through tall grass but he will be out with me sitting for deer later in the season.
  9. well im glad to hear that some others have the same thooughts on sharing the woods as i do. its too bad the ones i seem to find don't share our views.i think i may take up bow hunting too seeing i was given an older bow. figured at first that i could atleast use it to target shoot with my dad but now that hey are going to open it oct 1 i could use the beging of the month to deer hunt while i wait for the leaves to drop for good grouse hunting.
  10. well i know sat morning i took my first 2 shots at 730 five min after sunrise at a rooster my cocker flushed. continued hunting till 930 taking one more shot. there were also about 40 other men hunting pheasants and many shots were taken. just like any other hunting many shots are taken at birds just after sunrise. this very topic is one reason i am reluctant to start bow hunting hunters must realize that deer bow season is also taking place with various small game seasons. i get really agrivated when hunting state land for grouse and come across an idiot who decides its a good idea to draw down on my dog because we are out in " his woods" or "you can't have a dog out during deer season". i do my best to avoid bow hunters while persuing my game of choice but sometimes you do run across them.
  11. no new reg. it was read wrong this is what it states it is unlawful to hunt with "An autoloading firearm with a capacity of more than 6 shells (one which requires that the trigger be pulled separately for each shot), except an autoloading pistol with a barrel length of less than 8 inches." also here with any semi-automatic firearm with a capacity to hold more than 6 rounds, EXCEPT the following semi-automatic firearms: firearms using .22 or .17 caliber rimfire ammunition, or firearms altered to reduce their capacity to no more than 6 shells at one time in the magazine and chamber combined, or autoloading pistols with a barrel length of less than eight inches.
  12. have stache and gotee year round let the rest fill in mt. man style wild and scragly through the season
  13. yes have seen a few here you don't need a stamp just a hip number
  14. heading to the adks. for the weekend with my dad and cocker. hoping the weather and grouse cooperate.
  15. usually gut then but depends where i am skin at home just make a slice big enough to clean out in the woods when i do skin if not keeping i slice the length of the back from head to tail the pull each side down over feet and cut off at joint
  16. went out saturday and came home with 2 got busted by a few that hauled with no chance of a shot. met a guy that was out with a treeing cur that had limited out the past two days with 5 in hand while i talked to him quite interesting.
  17. i was standing gate watch on the piers in norfolk when they hit. An officer from subron 8 came down with a tv told us to lock down and watch what was happening. that was a first being told to watch tv while on watch. With in minutes fighter jets were overhead from the air base and the piers were bustling all ships were underway and the water front vacant by the afternoon. i was left behind due to my nearing discharge and spent the next few days in awe and standing watches at the various subron buildings on base. the tragety did not affect my family directly but is still with me as i assume it is with all that lived that day
  18. there are programs for restoration just not enough there are areas by me that hold pheasants year round not large numbers of them but year round non the less. the dec has made changes to better use the lands and money needed for the pheasant program in our state. and redirecting the funds used for habitats to just the most suitable land in the state many may not see that as much but .... i also think the state needs to do more for small game in general but do not see that being done in the near future.
  19. many do go to game farms put and take is not ideal by any means but if it is offered i will use it. there are also restoration projects underway by various chapters of pheasants forever throughout the state
  20. the program is what it is one thing you will never see is the releasing of grouse they will not breed in captivity. not all those released birds are stupid either depends which ones and where you go after them. i like to go in the afternoon and work swamp thickets ect that my dog can work after the am crew dispersed/dispatched
  21. they are pretty damn acurate out of the box mine is 20 but..... there is a hole foeum devoted to thier accurizing on antoher site i go on.... and it does not take much as they are a straight forward design to begin with
  22. allso have a trip planned to the adk with the dog for the fall i know of probable more productive covers closer to home but there seems to be something about chasing them up there that gets ya
  23. i hear that alot and have found that more than likely they may still be around just in different areas or posted lands due to ever changing covers don't know much about your area of the state though
