Idk if there's really a giant trick to asking permission. One thing that helps is if you're from the area or sound n look like it. i know lots of the farms I hunt people from out of area have asked n gotten an instant no. This is no dis on anyone. Some I'm sure are good folks but it's easier if you know the guy somewhat or seem a local. Maybe buy eggs each trip up, see a farmer peering into a truck, stop n ask if he needs help. Escaped cows in the road, let the farmer know n see if they need help rounding them up. After a few encounters just inquire if ever he or she would consider letting you bowhunt, turkey hunt whatever. Keep the request small n it may be granted. Before the next season ask for that. Remember lots of guys approach landowners or farmers n once you get a spot don't take it for granted. You're there n they're unloading a hay trailer, help. Offer to keep an eye on place when the farmer isn't around. Don't be pushy just be available. And don't drive in the damn fields. No farmer ever bought a field for you to drive through. Ask before you do so n preferably don't even ask. He'll offer if it's ok. another thing once you get on. Hunt like you were tresspassing. That's a motto I live by n it works. Leave no sign you were there, don't hunt near houses or livestock n don't shoot towards roads or tresspass on the neighbors. If he starts getting grief it won't be worth it.

You can bait but there's places w very few deer because people who haven't learned to hunt can see n shoot a few. The herd is very very depleted in North Jersey. Sunday Bowhunting is allowed but only on wmas or private land. There's actually more land available to bowhunt though than most guys know about

Why would anyone read the NY post. It's a rag magazine

Yes they were rough, almost guaranteed to slip

Scout style or "standard" rifle for still hunting?
Bowguy 1 replied to uberyan's topic in Deer Hunting
This is absolutely true. Had a guy I was shooting in some rifles for. They were some nice guns but the scopes were horrendous. The glass must be good -
This is not true, it was all training for the day of crossbows

Core welcome to the sport n congrats on the deer n relaying your experiences to the newer folks. Two things I wanna say. A rangefinder is a great idea but 40 yard shots for most guys especially new often are not. Too many variables we can't practice n it's hard to be perfect excited. The next thing is the all day sits or mid day. You can do it during the rut or pre rut. During the rut anything can happen, pre rut walking stage is a favorite of mine n a few extra hours very often pay off for either. Some of the bigger bucks are taken mid day during the rut. Keep it in mind

That's what I meant. Thanks

I personally don't hunt house deer but I think NY changed the law to read only 50 ft w vertical bows so you're safe but what if it does run into a yard? Be careful

Scout style or "standard" rifle for still hunting?

Wow some great advice being given. My personal advicd not to conflict any others is a bolt action. You can use it in so many circumstances so why limit anything. The Tikka is a great rifle, for calibers w a new shooter something manageable. Learn to shoot. Pretty good means you still have a ways to go. Be proud of yourself for doing well n strive always to be better. The calibers Id recommend are a 7mm-08 or maybe a .243 -
Tell ya one sorts gadget of sorts that Id never again deer hunt without. I'm a pretty minimalist guy in the deer woods but a Glens deer handle works wonderfully. A friend talked to me about it for years before he finally just bought me one n it's great n doesn't beat your hand up on drags. Well worth it

Any female hunters but the idea is to help people with no mentors or newbies learn the sport. There will be field dressing lessons and processing lessons the next day. We're also doing some scouting known areas outside hunt site to try n show them what to look for far as food sources and sign. Besides the hunt its a learning experience all the way around. For the people in wheel chairs we have a motorized one w trax to get them in. The spot is set aside for mentored hunts. Besides the hunts my gun club partners w the refuge to put on a disabled vet fishing/barbecue and the following day is family fishing day. Look up the NWTF events calendar to see other women's events such as kayaking/archery days. All positive stuff

In Sept, Oct, Nov we're doing mentored hunts at the Walkill refuge. It's in NJ but very near the Orange co NY line n non residents are welcome. Call the Walkill River national wildlife refuge for more info. It's a joint venture between them and the NWTF. These are deer hunts but in spring we do the same w turks.

Great pic n he'll get better in the car

I've never used one either. Not carrying one extra thing in my pack plus it doesn't take long with a knife. I use a woodsman which is perfect for the whole dress job. I do know a couple guys that use em n they seem to like it

That's awesome! Good luck to you both! My daughter's first deer was more memorable than my own, n I'm sure it'll be that way w you
-
Very cooll! Great way to teach your son and a great memory

Ah that's awesome buddy! Wish you the best this season

Out of the 2 I've only used the summits., I've got 2 vipers n a cobra. They are solid, climb easily, never slip, attach quickly and extremely comfortable, in fact you may fight falling asleep. Out of the climbers I've used the summits are tied for number one w another company you didn't mention Lone Wolf. The benefits of Lone Wolf are they're easy to put up, climb easy, don't slip, are solid same as the summit, now for the differences. They fold flat n are much less bulky to carry, very very quiet, and what I consider an asset at times is it's less comfortable. You sit up straighter n stay awake. After work sits you're not fighting sleep. so if those 2 interest you long all sits it's the summit, few hour half day hunts like bow season the Lone Wolf comes. The muddy I have no personal experience with
