I didn't watch it but 130 yards is extreme asinine n all luck especially on a running animal. Someone one here will be tempted to try long shots this year because of stuff like this. We owe the animals n each other absolutely our best, luck should be left for the lottery. Bad shots lead to bad hits. Bad hits lead to arrows in faces, hips, legs, etc n the pics of those deer once taken on some antis lawn go viral n will only hunt us

The guy has to be guilty it looks like he's going to mass murder convention

Good advice already given but just buy new boots. Straight rubber is notorious for making you sweat. Use leather uppers w rubber bottoms n the prob goes away

In July We started a women's archery program n while many did very well one went full bore. Shelley had never shot a bow before n took everything to heart. We started her w string bows than progressed to Genesis bows. We taught her in the Nasp format which emphasizes form. 2 weeks before the first hunter Ed class she asked if it was possible to be ready. I gave here private lessons n she got a bow a week before the class. On the deck shooting she did so well people were high fiving her. Tonight was her first hunt. I dropped her off after assembling treestand to tree n making sure she was up safely. By the time I got to the next ridge n locked in she was texting a buck was under her. In nj early season you must shoot a doe first n she had to pass. It stayed for 1/2 hr. Shortly after it left I passed some does as Id taken mine n they were headed her way. She saw them n for the next few hours hardly 10 mins passed without her having deer nearby or under but never giving her a good angle. She ended up seeing many many deer, 2 bucks n even had her bow drawn back but before she shot the deer turned bad so she passed. Overall a great night n she's hooked. She couldn't believe the shakes she got from being so close. Nights like tonight are why we do it. I'm proud of her ability n discretion in passing marginal shots n glad she signed up for women's archery program. She is too. Hopefully next post has her standing over her first deer at 49 years young. Mentor a kid or newby itll make your season even more enjoyable

Pretty cool, I don't have any but have a button from NJ dated 1932

Well hunting the ground you can adjust. Sounds like you have a great game plan but the op is asking a question he's not sure the answer n may not have the experience you do. Id still advise being careful but it's prob like telling guys to wait after the shot, back out when unsure or not hunting if the wind isn't right. Guess we all gotta learn. Op whatever you try hope you get em. nyantler no disrespect at all intended

All I know is gander mountain in Middletown is an hour from nj, maybe a little less. Why is it that there's tons of bait shelves n they're always mostly empty? I think a fair amount of guys break the law. It's a shame cause their unsure of their ability imo. I know a buncha guys will say they'd do good anyway but have a small piece they'd love to draw them onto. Not enough time for scouting. Sure none of ya all do but I say it's not hunting even in states its legal

I agree you need to hunt them smartly n a little scent may not totally freak em out if done very occassionally. But hunt em n get em suspicious by even hunting clean, mistakes still happen. Wind shifts, etc the deer will get harder to hunt the moment it detects the slightest pressure. Think we're sorta saying similar things. If you hunt when things are only perfect youd not be hunting him all the time n imo not overhuntimg him. Prob not hunting him all that much considering everything I listed such as exit n entry wind and routes. Best shot is still first one imo

I like Halloween for a best start day. Killed many bucks on that very date. Forget the rut predictions. Believe you're looking for the best shot at a buck? Hear me out. We all know buck to doe ratios are out of wack somewhat. We all know best bet is a good buck to doe ratio. During peak rut many does are in heat. The true nature of the out of wack ratio is in play. Too many does in heat all at one time, Bucks running all over seemingly never still. They're hard to get a shot at n why would they answer a call or scent. A week or so before peak rut the buck/does coming into heat ratio is much more competitive. The bucks are in search mode(walking stage) n once they find a hot doe often more than one buck is in hot pursuit or at least trailing. Being they're competitive they respond much more readily to calls, scents n visual stimulants. Combine bucks in walk stage w a high buck to doe coming in ratio compared to the rest n I'm in the woods most assured during the earlier stage. This isn't saying the rut isn't crazy fun but it's just hatder to get a shot very often. Personal prediction, (don't care bout Alzheimer's prediction) is the rut will be so so. Years where I hunt it seems the best rut comes when there is a good mast crop. Rubs, scrapes, looking, chasing. I hunt northern NJ n southern NY n the mast just isn't there very heavy. The peak rut in our area is often 11/8-11/15 but be aware visible rut can be less if it's overly hot but they're still rutting either way

Very good point

NYantlye I gotta respectfully disagree. Least where I hunt you absolutley can over hunt a buck. You are correct in the moving the stand thing but keep at him n he'll smell you, see you, etc, once that buck becomes suspicious it's pretty well over for a bit. He leaves or turns nocturnal. Best way to kill him is by taking your best shot while he's still in his pattern and conditions are perfect. Remember it's a mature buck n he's seen this before.

Rest your in other words sparingly go after him. Set up asap but make sure wind is perfect even for your entry and exit if you don't get him. Hunting him hard will only move him or make em nocturnal imo

Sounds like whitetail heaven

The farm down the road does deer depredation permits. As soon as a deer is shot the Bears show up. The county I live is over run w bears. You shoot a deer n wait the prescribed time a bear is on it. Drag a deer out of the woods, bears follow you, they even pull them from truck beds n decks. Two years ago two dif friends of mine watched bears miles apart, so they weren't the same bear I don't think, catch fawns kill n eat em. If say a deer/fawn distress call is money if they're around. One side note back. Bears are extremely easy to kill, I love my .375, it's a great caliber n can tell lots of stories but bears hit well need much much less

Elites are awesome, good luck w it!

Why would you assume pressure? Deer are not in the oaks mid day. Late summer I typically scout by looking into the trees in known oak areas. I mentally log where white oaks are n blacks full of nuts. As the season progresses I'll know where to look next as one tree or more is depleted. Most guys go into the woods in their area more than me checking cameras. I'm not bashing anyone but we're losing our woodsmanship n it's not good. I also don't hunt one small piece so not having acorns or farm crops in an area won't hurt me, Id just go somewhere else. If you have no food sources you'd have to set cams either in bed areas or transitions between the two. One small area limits our ability to hunt the wind n rest areas. All hunting 101. Again no bash to anyone I just don't think technology should be swapped for hunt knowledge or woodsmanship but you all can do what you like
-
this I why I don't like cams. Please don't take offense but instead of being in the woods to see if trees are heavy w nuts, if they're falling, which species n where which as hunters we should know in order to set up, we're contemplating why deer are less visible on a camera. Doesn't seem to be a great acorn year in the places I hunt, it's not a bust just not extreme by any means

There's no way, I'm gonna offend some people n for that I apologize but ruger sucks. Get the tikka n do yourself a giant favor

Im not gun poor n use my stash so I guess it depends on season or just simple whims. Often for deer it's a toss up between a Sako 300 win mag or a 700 in 243 for rifle but it varies.

Nj started Sat. Just state hop n extend your seasons

Stingers are great too. Use em in my recurves

The obvious first choice is already given safety harness, from there same things as in a ground blind. I see no need for a cushion today's stands are normally comfortable enough. Id personally rather stay home than leave the binoculars though. Nowhere on earth can you only see 30-50 yards unless you're inside. Now shooting further is dif. What happens when you see movement a ways off n wanna see? How bout determining if an incoming deer is a shooter before it's in range? On n on. Imo you'd have to be a little nuts to leave binoculars home., they're worth they're weight in gold, bring em. Not bashing another's methods just a very firm personal opinion

Thank you Doewacker
