  1. Checked my piggy bank, nope, can't do it. I need a bigger allowance! Mt Morris is a nice area, went to school at Geneseo.
  2. It really is awesome when hard work and talent pay off for students! As others have said, congratulations to both of you.
  3. Thanks for posting this Cynthia!
  4. I have a 12 gauge 870 with a cantilever mounted scope, the somewhat rare heavy barrel version. I shoot Rottweil Laser 3", 1.25 ounce slugs (no longer available). After opening day I mostly hunt thick brush and the heavy saboted slugs do well for me. They are slower and make a bigger hole than most slugs. During muzzleloader season I mostly hunt feeding areas in the afternoon with my Savage ML II. I have toyed with the idea of using my .308 during firearm season with copper bullets to harvest some field does but have not done so yet. Maybe next year!
  5. I have read that electric chainsaws have so much torque that the usual protective chaps don't work. (They contain tough fibers that are meant to bind up the saw.) As far as which way to sharpen chains goes, in the woods obviously I use use a file for touch ups. In the garage I use an electric grinder and can bring a beat up chain to new working condition fairly quickly. All methods take practice, IMO.
  6. Well that is encouraging, maybe someday primers will be available again!
  7. Nice pictures, that doe is showing off! I've seen two does stand on their hind legs and strike each other forcefully with their front legs but I never saw anything like what that doe is doing.
  8. Just google anything like "covid mortality of vaccinated vs unvaccinated". If there is a particular state you are interested in you probably have to go to their particular DOH website. The fact that the data is not centralized might lend credibility to some. As I said, it just doesn't matter because no amount of data will convince someone who does not want to hear.
  9. One can easily go online and look at various official State Department of Health data that shows that the overwhelming majority of people who are now dying of covid are not vaccinated. I don't just mean NYS, or just states of a particular color. And that will not make a da## bit of difference to some people. No more than the recommendations of their physician and almost all medical doctors. Because, of course, they know they are right. I gave up and wish them and their families the best of luck.
  10. There was a lot of heavy, low dark clouds in my area during gun and muzzleloader season. I would say I gained maybe 15 extra minutes most afternoons. But I thought it was great because I didn't have to be making frequent looks at my watch to see when it was time to quit. There was one day when there was patchy snow on the ground with clear skies and I could see well for the full extra 30 minutes.
  11. The primer may have caused the sabot and powder to move and I'm not surprised it blew off the condom, that pressure has to go somewhere. This brings up an important point. Under this circumstance (the primer went off but the powder did not ignite) it would not be safe to fire off another primer unless the bullet is reseated to your witness mark. I believe I have read of accidents that have occurred because of this.
  12. At this point it is legal to sell perch, sunfish, rockbass. It's not legal to sell any "gamefish" such as bass, walleye or crappie. In Jefferson County there is no limit on perch, and selling them is a thing there, especially during ice fishing season. There are places up there that buy whole perch, and sell fillets. You would have to be a much better fisherman than I am to want to do that. To me they are "gold" and nothing beats a surf and turf dinner of fried perch fillets with grilled backstrap. On the fishing websites there is an annual debate about whether selling fish should be outlawed. It certainly can be detrimental to inland waters, I'm not sure about Jefferson County/Lake Ontario waters.
  13. Oh yeah, opening morning sounded like a war zone back then. At the end of opening day the highway (390 or maybe 15 back then?) was stuffed with deer hunters in trucks driving home to Rochester.
  14. Yes, and on top of that the days are at their shortest so it's easier for them to feed during the dark. A lot has to do with the land/property. We try hard not to pressure the deer too much, I am still seeing deer most days during legal shooting times. Mostly late afternoon as they feed.
  15. Wow, the hunter was located within 5 minutes, that seems really lucky. So he had a harness and was able to reach his cell phone apparently. Great job Ranger Chappell!
  16. Thanks for what you do for hunters and thank you for taking the time to report on your adventures with Luna and Kunox. As many have already said, this is my favorite thread.
  17. I'm very sorry for your loss Cynthia. I'm sure better times are ahead.
  18. I'm very happy with things just the way they are in NY. I realize things vary quite a bit in different locations. I hunt in northern Oswego and Cayuga Counties. I would classify myself as a meat hunter although I enjoy seeing the larger bucks on occasion. On our farm property in the last 5 years we have taken two big 12 pointers and a truly huge 8 pointer was harvested along with many doe and smaller bucks. I don't buy beef and eat mostly venison, turkey and fish we have harvested. I didn't take any of the 3 large deer mentioned above. I really don't care and am happy for the relatives that took them. And I can always go over to my cousin's house and admire his 12 pointers without having to foot his taxidermy bill! As far as I am concerned, we have it pretty good here in NY as far as outdoor opportunities go!
  19. I've been out of action since opening day with a bad back. (I was lucky to get a very nice 6 point that day.) Felt good enough to go out this afternoon, short walk close to the house. I got up in a treestand and right around sunset a 4 pointer appears from somewhere and checks out a scrape 40 feet away. I think he was laughing at me. Hope to find a doe with my muzzleloader.
  20. All great advice here. It's wise to go to a pro shop and get set up correctly from the start as far as things like draw length, bow tuning, arrows, etc. So you are headed in the right direction, don't be in a hurry, it's a life-long journey!
  21. So sorry Cynthia. When it rains it pours. Like Chuck, I lost my (younger) brother to Covid last spring, it's no joke. Best wishes to you and your husband, hang in there.
  22. I used to see grey fox in the hardwoods in central Pennsylvania but I never see them here in central NY. Lots of red foxes. Do they have different preferred habitat?
  23. Well, it look's like it was his first post here, so that seems likely.
  24. I believe that in the spring time ash leaves are one of the highest protein sources available for deer. Luckily in my part of 8F (near Lake O) I am not seeing much damage yet. I'm sure it will happen. On the other hand at a family camp in 9P, near Ossian, most of the ash trees are dead or dying. Sad to see this, ash is a good lumber tree also.
