Anybody know how much snow there is in the Putnam county area? I was thinking about going shed hunting this weekend up there but im not sure if there is still too much snow. Thanks, John

Went out shed hunting both yesterday and today and nothing to show for it.. I know what you mean Geno its real hard and gets frustrating when you see others posting pics of the sheds they find but WNY is right once you do find one it is a very rewarding feeling. Oh well maybe my luck will change next time. John

Geno, Glad to hear you found some good spots for this upcoming season. I did that last year during the winter but the problem was that when i went in the fall to hunt everything was so thick and green that i couldnt get into half of the spots to hunt without walking thorugh a wall of brush lol. Make sure you mark them spots good now or else you might have a tough time getting back to them in Oct. As for the sheds i guess most of the deer down here on the island have probalby dropped already but im sure there is still a good amount that are carrying. Once the snow melts some more it should be a lot easier to find them. Im hoping it all melts this week so i can get back out there next weekend. Good Luck.. John

I went out today. Looked from 9:30 to 3 and all i found was this weird antler lol. As i was leaving i saw somebody walking along the field thats private property. He had a huge 5 point shed and he turned out to be a dec officer. He said he was just checking to make sure nobody was in the field and he came across the antler. I knew there were sheds out in that field but i didnt want to get in trouble so i stayed out of there. Well at least i broke the ice and found my first one of the season. It was on long island.

Geno Most of those bucks were upstate in Greene County. Only one of them was from down here on the island. John

We have been seeing more bears than ever up in greene county in the last few years. My brother shot one in 2007 and my friend took one on the same farm in 2010. I was out on monday with my brother. he saw two deer far off in the brush and i didnt see anything. We split up about 40 50 yards apart and walked for about 4 miles using his GPS. Snow was too deep so for the afternoon we decided to just sit where we found some good sign but nothing cam through. I think that will be my last hunt of the year. Now its time for shed hunting once the snow melts a bit. Good luck to anybody who is still getting out there!!! John

Oh man looks like a real mess. I have and older jeep that i use for hunting. I was over there last year and had to turn back because i was afraid of getting stuck. Were you able to get out or did you have to get pulled out??? John

ive hunted both of those spots before. allthough i didnt see too many deer in there i did see a lot of sign so i know they are there. if you go in from spot 41 make sure you go in closer to the field. its brushy in there and it makes for some great still hunting. Good Luck!!! John

Congrats on the deer!!! (longislandhunter) The Grumman hunt was only for Riverhead residents which really sucks. It is a two week hunt and i know a few guys that got in on the hunt. They saw a ton of deer but didnt get any shots off. John
