my thinking is thin them out to make the woods safe for other critters, there are some animals that we should try to wipe out, like turkeys for instance. one turkey eats as much food as 13 grouse, so a whole flock of turkeys are taking the place of probably 1,278 ruffed grouse, without those turkeys the woods would be full of grouse. I prefer hunting grouse and eating them too over turkeys the stinking things turn my stomach and they aren't great eating either. I shoot every turkey I see in the gut with a 22 short, turkey season I just say im woodchuck hunting and in fall I say im shooting red squirrels, all winter too, and then when i call turkey in or see a flock I lay into them with the 22 shorts. in a couple years NY should see fantastic grouse numbers and you have me to thank! you're welcome. without the turkeys the fisher should starve and again, you are welcome!

honestly if one was truly concerned with human scent spooking deer in their hunting spot they would spend as much time as possible traipsing around their hunting spot and habituating deer to their scent. they only fear new things, and it doesn't take them any time at all to get used to something. they follow a new rubber boot scent from food plot to food plot or feeder to feeder, what's the difference, and poof they learn to follow rubber boot scent expecting food. it's not as complicated as the marketing people want to make it seem.

bow hunters over think scent, predator trappers catch wary animals, ones that often times have been scared by traps before, if you follow the same scent control as a good long line trapper which is almost zero concern over scent , then deer will have no notice of you. like camo clothing and three million kinds of broadhead, , scent control is a marketing genius' idea.

Yep, used them for a couple seasons, think there is still nicked up one around somewhere. used bear heads and brutes and nother heavy 2 blade, darned if I can think of its name. I tried those out when I got my first compound it was either bear black bear or polar bear, felt like someone smacked the riser with rubber mallet when you shot it. it worked though, was child's play having a bow with let off, felt like cheting, sights on it, metal arrows, and thse broadheads. flew ok, I never was impressed with the penetration out of that old bear bow went back to the long bow and then recurve and bear heads. I remember right those blades broke easy on me.

if the ears look very noticeable its worth passing on it if its in a group of bears, pass on it.

we used to run bear, ever hear of nelson cole, pete Richards? tree 100 bear a year. bear battling musket, and Tippy, that were my lines too. last of my hounds was put down today moved to Wyoming and we just shoot bear, I guess you call it hunting but it's really just looking at bears til we see one the minimum size we want then killing it. grizz grizz grizz too small black grizz grizz grizz too small black and so on until hey, that's a monster, bang. get the horses. these are all photos of blacks that should be passed on, they are either female, (long necks) and or immature or barely mature bears ( pie/ wedge shaped heads). when there are 400 pounders out there shooting a 150pound immature bear is the same as shooting a forkhorn or big spike, some people don't care about thatstuff ( I don't I shoot the first fat spike elk that I see) but others claim it's best to let them mature...same guy shoots a 170 pound 4 year old bear...an animal that lives for more than 20 in the wild and cracks 600 pounds....well, whatever.

anyone name their deer? Whats your favorite?
slickrockpack replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Deer Hunting
It is as silly as calling them Deer.... or naming your dog, bird or any pet. who cares what they think, we name our pets, we name our deer, elk, etc. Hell we even name mountains....you don't think a pine tree or mountain knows what we call it do you? we have our favorites, and the descendants of favorites this is Notch, she's 7 now, she is Latimer's daughter, her mother was Misty. you've got to keep the doors closed or she jams herself right inside, get's under the table and won't come out. her daughter is her 9th, we just call her Baby Notch, her brother was killed a by a lion next to her when she was a baby baby and it has effected her a lot, she's very timid and prefers to keep close to Notch or us, she watched us shoot bears and coyotes and miss a wolf in the yard so she likes when she sees the rifle come out on the deck, she'll whack us with her hoof until we let her sniff it all over. and we also have bowling ball, son of bowling ball, and Spy and son of Spy, deer are maternal and we get soft spots for Shade, who is Newt's great granddaughter. Like people they are all the same. and like people, they are all individuals too. you go ahead and name them, I bet they have a name for you too. -
that's ridiculous.

Thanks Smoke, It's 50 miles for a gallon of milk but for us it's fine. getting a little too crowded here now as you can see from the houses in the photos, 30 years go there were 8 houses in this 20 mile long valley, now it's a town with 165 residents. nothing lasts forever. snowing hard above 8000, everything is moving down, it will just keep getting better and better, I'm annoyed to death I have to go east again soon, but Mom and Sis passed away this year so last time. -

snow is pushing them into fall mode, and it's always a ball when everything moves down into town. unfortunately the crawlers are heading into the warmth from the house too, more scorpions on the carpet than normal and woke up to a black widow walking on my cheek this morning...hate that. damn deadly little bitches. -

no, it really isn't Grampy! LOL. 5,000 or more elk in one herd, THAT's a lot of elk, which won't happen til mid winter. because there are so many big game animals all around us here all the time hunting isn't like in NY, it's more just knocking down met and filling freezers, it's not a high five thing it's more along the lines of , Butterballs were on sale at Blair's so I bought 10. last year my wife and I had poor communication when cull tags went on sale to locals and I thought she told me to pick up 13 elk tags while in town, so I did, this is cull hunts in Jan. When I got home she shook her head because what she had said was , "I picked up 13 elk cull tags while in town"...so we had 26 cull tags cow/calf and our 6 regular season tags, I'm pretty sick of elk right now and a hot dog sounds better. but we like watching them and listening to them. went down to disconnect irrigation, that's those wheels and pipes ou see, and the fields were busy with raghorns being tough guys, always fun to watch. the other is herds that come through the yard, Nothing bugling in the yard yet, but soon.
