Since I’m likely the only meteorologist on this forum, I’m gonna do this thread with updates every day or two. We probably won’t know for certain until next Wed or Thu (11/14-11/15) because of the active pattern we are in.

Anybody know if we're going to have decent weather for gun opener? I would check my AccuWeather app but on Friday it told me it was partly cloudy with 0 precipitation while I was sitting in a monsoon.

I’m going to create a thread for this and I’ll give updated details every day or two

What’s everyone else seeing for snow fall forecasts for next week?
Looks like lake effect Fri-Mon (heaviest on Sat), with the possibility for a nor’easter type storm mid next week. Lots of model spread though, so it could be all rain, or 6-12” of snow for CNY/CapitalRegion/Dacks. We will wait and see, but generally looks like a cold airmass for a while starting this Saturday.

Looks like the first lake effect snow event will unfold Fri-Sun over the Tug Hill and surrounding areas. Enjoy for those that get it!

Nice looking deer and either a 2.5 or 3.5. I’d lean 3.5

If you are working in Colonie you should give the Pine Bush a try. Only minutes from any place in Colonie. I don't know much about best places to access but I see hunter's vehicles parked on 155 (New Karner Road) all the time during the season.
Thanks for the info. I was looking at the parcels along Kings Rd and Old State Rd on OnX that are pretty big. Didn’t realize how much land they had to hunt. -
Where did you hunt when you lived in CP? Were you happy with the land? Its not like you moved hours away is the only reason I am asking. I wouldn't think a lot of those places you just named are any farther from CP then from Rotterdam. I live in Saratoga
I hunted up around and north of Wilton. Only a half hour from CP but now that’s an hour. It was okay land but I think the land I mentioned S/SW of Albany would be comparable or maybe better. Time is a big factor for me cause I work in colonie and usually hunt after work (6am-2pm shift). With the days getting shorter traveling farther is an issue.

I’ve been hunting NZ all season since there was some good public land not too far from where I lived. But this past weekend I moved to just outside Rotterdam. Was wondering what public land I should try? I was thinking Pine Bush, Margaret Burke WMA, Partridge Run, and Charleston Forest. All within ~30 min. It’s late in the season and I’d likely be scouting while hunting. Any suggestions would be great!!! Thanks! I bow and gun hunt too if it helps and honestly prefer bow...

I check it all day if I don’t already know what’s going on. Coming from a meteorologist I would say use weather.gov to find your local weather it will be more accurate than other apps or sites.

Looking like it will be mostly rain for this storm. Threat of snow would be restricted to the highest elevations of the Dacks.

Same question. Thinking Fisher?

Hey everyone, so I was sitting in the woods the other day and wondered what the legal sunset/end of shooting time was, and how well I could see at that time. I had never really thought about it before, and have always hunted until I couldn’t tell what an animal was. Turns out, I can usually see for almost a half hour after “sunset”. Since I now hunt on state land, I was wondering who sticks to the official sunset time, or goes until they can’t see, to be willing to take their last shot?

Checked on two spots this afternoon before sitting in a 3rd now. Not seeing much rut activity other than a likely man made scrape. Light winds and 38F which is nice

Back to car. Things to do. Pulled cam card. Thought I saw 8 but looking like 7 now. Happened fast Sorta big body on him. What’s the giant mass in front ? Maybe should have zipped him. I don’t know lol

Big body and that mass is weird. But I don’t think you’ll regret passing that as your first with the bow. It’s all about the hunt/adrenaline rush you got today.

Hard to tell with the light but Cooper Hawk or Sharp-Shinned Hawk are possible too based on what looks like a pattern on the tail.

Was walking to my spot on public hunting land today when a couple walking the trails stopped me and asked why I’m carrying a gun and hunting and that it’s not allowed. I then walked back out to the parking lot and showed them the tiny sign saying to beware of hunters during hunting season. This happened a few weeks ago too when bow opened. Point being, public land is odd, and it’s shocking how many people that are not hunting use the land during the season, and have no idea hunters are there.

This might post late since there’s poor service where I hunt but hoping something walks out tonight. Went to post and found this guy on my glove. Squashed him. Anybody have suggestions for tick-proofing my hunting clothes?

Here is a link you can use to keep up with some of the bigger bucks taken. As you will see there are some nice ones from all over.

Wow this one in Warren Co was massive. Doubt I’ll ever see one that big and I hunt there.

Went out tonight in the 85F sauna. Figured I’d hunt near a water source, and I found myself wanting to drink from the swamp. No action besides a ring neck pheasant walking around

Heading out this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon...not expecting anything with it being mid 70s. Can’t kill em from the couch though. Going to wear as little clothes as possible.

Jeez that third was a monster compared to the other two. Wonder if he got sick/wounded or something which lead to the antler deformation. Either way it’s good to see rut action out there, cause I haven’t seen many rubs, scrapes, etc.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I have not found a single rub on the property i hunt yet,not sure where the bucks are this year. I hope they are just taking their time. .Maybe it is time to explore another corner of the 300 acre woods..
I have only seen one, but that was in N. Tier. Nothing in S Tier

Is there a few of us who still hunt on the ground using just our natural surroundings as como? I've harvested my fair share in a stand but there's something about taking a deer on the ground with a bow.
Yup no stand or blind for the most part. But I primarily hunt state land which is why. Any time I hunt private I use a blind

Update - 11/7 for 11/17.
Because we are 10 days out and in an active pattern, there is significant model uncertainty for next Saturday. The models begin to disagree starting next Tuesday, in fact, with a few models having 6-12” of snow for CNY, Capital Region, Catskills, and Adirondacks. Other models have this as an only rain event. So that will be something to watch!
After that, most models are in agreement on some sort of trough/low pressure system moving over NY Friday and Saturday. Some models have this system with temps in the 20s/30s, other models have it in the 40s. All models have some type of precip (rain or snow), cloudy skies, and light to moderate W/NW winds.
So overall, it does look active/wet for opening day, but there is so much model variability that when I look at the models tomorrow they could have clear skies and ridging/high pressure. Stay tuned.
