  1. If you're not sure let him have the hide tanned and you can always mount it at a later time. If you go on another hunt and get a bigger bear you can do a full mount on the bigger one.
  2. Take a look at these calls. You won't find a better sounding call and especially for the money. http://www.matthewscustomcalls.com/
  3. Paula you are now officially hooked to rabbit hunting. I did a lot of rabbit hunting as a younger man and it's still my favorite hunt. Walking out of the woods the last Sunday of ML season I spotted a rabbit sitting tight underneath a bush and I just stopped and watched for a few minutes. Man did t it bring back a lot of memories... Congrats!!
  4. Happy Birthday my friend. Looking forward to seeing your pics from the upcoming shed hunting!!
  5. Thanks for the advice WJ. I actually started looking at other ammo since I couldn't find it and the NBT was my next choice. Your advice is very much appreciated!! Thanks.
  6. Can't ship to NY if I recall correctly. I tried ordering from Cabelas earlier this year but they can't ship to NY. Thanks for the heads up.
  7. My uncle likes this... you'll need to cut the pieces a little smaller then normal. http://www.melindalee.com/recipes/fondue-bourguignonne-and-7-dipping-sauces/ You can make your own sauces as well.
  8. I bought a Kimber in 7mm-08 some years back and I absolutely love the gun and the round. Only issue I've been having is finding ammo. I shoot Federal Premium 140gr Nosler partition bullets and I haven't been able to find any the last two years. I've contacted numerous gun shops and I've been in Cabelas and Dick's. Not only can't I find the brand I shoot but that caliber in general is very hard to find. I almost purchased the same gun the OP is talking about at Dick's in Oneonta right before the regular season for my nephew. The gun was $425 but they had absolutely no ammo in stock in that caliber. If anyone comes across the Federal ammo I use please let me know.
  9. I can relate. The last doe I shot was back in 2003 in IL. We have permission to hunt property out there and the farmer wants us to shoot does but he knows we're there to shoot big bucks. I shot a doe the first day and that made him happy. We continue to have permission to hunt his land till this day and I think that me killing that doe had a lot to do with it. It's what he wanted and we got what we wanted. I prefer not to shoot does but I will if we haven't gotten any deer and want the meat. The last doe I shot in NY was 20 some odd years ago.
  10. I haven't bowhunted in 5 years so next year I plan to get back into it. I've taken my best bucks with the bow and man do I miss it.
  11. Thank you for the birthday wishes guys. They are truly appreciated.
  12. Personally I had a good season thus far. I saw the biggest buck I've ever seen in NY while gun hunting. Unfortunately he was chasing a doe and I never got a clean shot opportunity. We saw deer every day we were out and my nephew shot a buck last weekend and my dad was there with us to share in the moment. I'll give it another go next weekend with the ML and hopefully I'll get my first deer with a ML!!
  13. Congrats to your dad. I don't know if it's the pics but I'm not seeing a 30" spread.
  14. Ok so here's my take on this. If I choose to go to a preserve and hunt for pheasants I'm doing because I want to enjoy a day out with friends or relatives and because I enjoy eating them. At the end of the day we all shot birds, hopefully, and had a great day together. If I go to a ranch to hunt for a rack, which I would never do, it's because I need to show off. There is absolutely no enjoyment to it!! Yes I'll shoot a big rack but that is the only thing I'll get out of it besides joining the ranks of the circle jerkers. It's not done because someone enjoys eating the meat because that equation doesn't even play into it. These ranch hunts are just to self inflate the egos of the people that do it. How do you take pride in shooting a deer in an enclosure just to hang the head on your wall? Please!!! I'll give you a true story... a few years ago I was visiting my taxidermist. A guy comes in with the grand slam for sheep and wanted them all mounted life size. I congratulated the guy and asked about his hunts. He said well I called a ranch in TX and the guy had what I wanted and I went and shot them. Hmmmm... Anyway it cost him $125,000 to do this so that he could achieve the next level on his SCI standing. I told him what I thought about him and his accomplishment and what to do with his next level!!
  15. Those antlers are on there real good but that's not saying that it can't happen. In over 40 years of hunting it's never happened to us. It doesn't mess up the hair if you tie the rope correctly. Also the weight of the deer will pull the rope away from the top of the head as the rope will slide up on the antlers.
  16. We always hang bucks by the antlers and does by the rear legs. Just always been that way for us.
  17. I'll be out there 12/12-12/14 with ML. Gonna be hunting in 3H on my buddy's place. He has a couple of food plots that the deer have been hitting pretty hard. Hoping to finally get one with the ML. Who else will be out there either with bow or ML? Good luck and be safe!!
  18. You can use the MZ but not the tag.
  19. You make the ethical shot to dispatch the deer, even though it's illegal. Ethical would win over legal with me in that case.
