send letters for crossbows in NY
Dave replied to sits in trees's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
Guys I am new to this discussion, but I look at it this was. I am not for the use of a crossbow for the following reason. This bow season I saw two nice bucks and they were about 50 yards from my stand and I just watched them walk away toward my neighbors property. It was two separate occasions when I saw the buck. If my neighbor had a crossbow he could have taken these deer no problem at that distance. So I am at a distinct disadvantage. Close but no cigar. That's not fair!!!!!!!!! Dave -
Moose, there is a program provided my the Sheriffs Dept that will check on your property. They send you a from and answer some questions and then they will patrol your property when they are in the area. They also put up two posters saying they are watching this piece of property. This service is free. Dave

When you trespass on someones property is a big difference than breaking into their house and garage. There is damage during a break in, none when they trespass.Dave

Gas Drilling on State Forest land?????
Dave replied to sits in trees's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
Guy's just look across the river to Pa. and see what's happening there especially in Dimock Township in Bradfrod County. They have sued and won millions of dollars from the gas companies for contamination their wells. If it happens in Pa it sure as hell will happen here. Dave -
Gas Drilling on State Forest land?????
Dave replied to sits in trees's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
Doc do you see this happening in your lifetime or in the near future? I don't, since the gas crunch in the early 70's we have done nothing. The cars don't get better mileage, still dependent on foreign oil And that lesson was learned over 40 years ago. Remember alternate days to buy gas? Their solution to the gas shortage was to just raise the price and no more shortage. We have so much plastic in our enviornment all we need to do is recycle. Remember the commercial that showed the plastic bottles used in the US each year could circle the earth 25 times . That could make alot of plastic parts, not to mention all the other plastic we have accumulated through the years. Just my opinion.Dave -

Just got my hands on the 30-30 Marlin
Dave replied to Robinson446's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Marlin lever actions are great guns I have a few. Two 30-30's, and a 22 marlin lever action . And my brother has a 35 Marlin. You won't regret it and it will last a life time. Dave. -
That's a sad story but I feel it's all too common. During my time hunting I have done the same thing you did, heard shots say a group of deer running and no one following up on the shot. It's a sad commentary on our fellow hunters who shoot and then don't follow up with the shot. Like you there were blood trails a blind man could follow. They leave a good deer in the woods to rot, then go on to shoot another one. I could say more but it just pisses me off. Dave

I agree with Bubba to avoid this type of situation KNOW YOUR TRAGET AND BEYOND. If you can't be sure don't shoot. Don't be caught up in the hunt and use poor judgment just to shoot a deer. Remember last year when a hunter in Sullivan county shot a deer in a field and the bullet went into a trailer and killed a little girl. Dave

Good luck, also from Bellmore.Dave

The deer in the photo in question is from the Canadice area and the date on the picture is accurate. The deer pic in this post is probably related to the one above........................ What caliber did you down that big boy with?Dave

I give him a lot of credit for telling his story. But if it was me I would take that story to the grave. Dave

Thoughts on the value of a sanctuary...
Dave replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Very interesting, will look into it. ThanksDave I have heard of people buying maniquines and dressing them in orange and giving them a toy rifle and setting them in a stand on the edge of the propertys to keep people out. Might be something to look into. Find someone who has some old camo to dress them up in and get some orange material from Wally world to make vests with. Make wooden permanent stands and tie the dummies to the trees. use screw in steps to get to them and take them out when you leave so the dummies don't steal your dummies Sounds like a lot of extra work but from what Ive read it seems to work really well. Especially along field edges where people like to drive by. The more orange on the dummie the better. -
I think I saw this club advertising, and do they have a place upstate also? Dave

Thoughts on the value of a sanctuary...
Dave replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Guys I agree in principal with the creation of sanctuaries . It's a great idea if you are there to monitor your property. Even better if you live on the property with the sanctuary. But for the guys who either lease or own your property and live far away we may be creating a nice honey hole for the locals. We own property and were told by the locals we only own the land when we are there and when we are not they do. During hunting season we see pickup's driving the road past our property to see if we are there, then turn around and go back the other way. They know when no one is there and then they hunt or drive your land. Dave -
Doewhacker, had the same experience sold my bike a few years ago. Build a house upstate and ran out of room so I sold my bike and used the money toward a garage. Best investment I ever made. Only miss the bike on nice warm sunny days, but I get over it.Dave

Guy's a few years ago I was in my pickup driving down a country road .It was near the town of Fremont Center in Sullivan county. It was pretty wooded on both sides of the road, as I looked ahead in the distance I saw an animal tan in color, the long tail and it had a long body . I thought to myself that I saw a ml or were my eyes playing tricks on me. Never mentioned it to anyone because everyone says there not in our area. Just like the bobcats they are hard to see any time of the year. In all my years of hunting I only say one in the woods in 40 yrs. But they are there. Dave

Also hunt 4W not too far from you. about 7 miles from east branch. Pass Harvard an way to Youngs butcher. Got a doe with bow, my brother shot a nice 6pt on opening day. We have a 250 acres and that's all we got out of 12 hunters. We only take doe with bow not gun and no spikes. But not to many guys bow hunt anymore.Dave

Doc, I know you an advocate for the disable hunters. How about this instead of crossbows? Just saying.Dave Dave
