  1. Yes I do realize but we have to add the game thieves & outlaws into the equation. Unfortuntly to many times they are over looked or accepted as alright behavior.
  2. Not the guy who uses his wifes tag first .
  3. I agree I spent a lot of time this year during small game season on state land & wma's and I am impressed to say the least. Nice job NYS !
  4. I feel that both are not going to work. A/R or one buck. We have to teach the next generation in a different manner. Get them following the rules and let them see that by not following the rules only hurts us. Unfortunetly as soon as most kids get their hunting certifacation dads bending the rules( maybe not most) but to many anyway. I feel if you want to see better deer hunting opertunity in NY you have to start at the beginning.

    Cleaning up

Glad to hear other folks are picking up trash also . Whenever I go out if I see something I can clean-up i will. I can't tell you how many time I come in from small game hunting and I have to empty out my game pouch of empty beer can's, bottle's plactic cup's . It amazes me that people just throw this stuff on the ground. Slob's ! Today in the middle of a trail on "my" property I picked up one of those throw away hand warmers. The A.H. had to go out of his way to take it out of his pocket ! Why not wait to you get home and throw it in your trash !
  6. Being an avid bird hunter I typicaly find at least one dear during the archery season and then after gun season when I resume chasing grouse I always find more carcass's . One year found the remains of 9 deer with in two miles of my house. I do live in an area that gets a lot of hunting pressure. Scary to think I am hunting in the same woods with these nimrods !

    state land

My reason for starting this post is I have been hunting a number of state parcels this year & last for small game. Big pieces and smaller ones and seem to be the only person hunting. I hear that NY hunters are down though you would never know it in my neighborhood (private land) Thought I might try some state land for deer season. I have been really impressed with the WMA's we have hunted.
  8. What's it like hunting deer on state land ? Is there a lot of hunter's ? or not as bad as you may think ? During the gun season. Obviously some state parcels will get more people then other areas.
  9. My boots go on the boot drier every night weather it's work or hunting. One pair of socks and good boot's. Stick your hand in your boot and feel the bottom if it's wet from sweating that's the problem.

    Fishers

Interesting I have never heard that before . We are starting to see them here in the past few years. I was happy to see them as I heard they feed heavy on porcupines .
  11. I don't know if they are any cheaper but I remember a homeowner once told me he used a bilge pump from his boat some how when the power was down for days. Perhaps this might work ?
  12. It pays to buy good glass . Don't buy cheap ! My friend and I were on a hunt in Alabama and on the trip down he couldn't believe I spent the money for a good scope. On that trip he missed a buck of lifetime because he coud not see it in the light conditions. He would take his eye off the scope and see the deer but when he put the gun up could see only a shadow. After that trip he went out and bought a good scope.
  13. Being a contractor and having tried the machine that was just metioned I advise against it. My finding's have been that the ground around here usually just laughs at that type set up. I usually use a guy out of bloomville but I don't know if he would go as far as Broome county ? You make it sound as though its pretty " rocky" where you are located also. In the right soil the machine that Fast Eddie mentioned do work well.
  14. What ever happened to Hav-a-tampa jewels or backwoods ?
  15. While watching the NGC on tv I once saw where there was what they called a mini ice age and winter stayed all year. I think it was in the early 1800's. Hey ................... Maybe thats what we will have this year !
  16. Do you save a lot ? is this the guy in sloatsburg ny ? If it is I remember when he had the old store up in the middle of the town of Sloatsburg and then he built the new one down a little lower by the NYS thruway.
  17. Hey you sound like you are becoming a crow hunter ! You didn't make mention of laughing though I am pretty sure you guy's had to be. Look for decoys at yard sales this summer and try and build up your decoy arsenal. Back in the day we would try and think up all kind of crazy decoy set-ups. Once while setting up and waiting for another friend when he finaly did show he had rigged one of the decoys to sit on his shoulder as he set up. Sounds kind of corny but it was funny and everyone was laughing there ass off while watching him set up........ It's the memories ! LOL!
  18. Hey Martin glad to hear you also were able to get out. I think you and I answered this thread in the beginning with the same response. I guess you can call us a couple of "seasoned" crow hunters ! LOL! I might go again this afternoon.
  19. Finaly got out today . I have not gone in years. Probably twenty . In any case we got there and put out 6 old dusty plastic decoys. Within twenty minutes of calling here they come. They busted us and flew away with out coming in. We did have fun though. Calling back and fourth with them. But they just were not buying it. They must have seen or heard us start laughing when we thought we had them coming. A lot of fun I think I will try and get out tomorrow.
  20. David Clark Taxidermy in Matamoras PA. He lived near where I used to live in NY but had a shop in PA. Great Job for a fair price.
  21. I have never seen a white squirel before. I have seen the black ones which are kind of cool. Also hunting in Illinois they have fox squirrels that look to be about 5 pounders. LOL! The first time you see one it makes you laugh.
  22. I saw a bunch of robins last week as well as a couple the week before. My friend saw two woodcock last thursday and I saw one five miles from that sighting on sunday. Typical though for where I live in the Oneonta area . I think the susqauhana river is a natural flyway.
  23. Very good point !!!! Always bring a compass with you. With any GPS I have purchased they always tell your that also . If I am hiking or deer hunting I always use compass and gps in conjunction. For bird hunting with my dog I just hit the go home button and take my chances. LOL!
